I have to agree with my good friend, Christina, when she writes that many French young people wear clothing with logos. As an amusing anecdote, I will note the time I was having breaky at the legendary Oriental hotel in Bangkok. Sitting next to me was a group of Frenchmen in their 20's, all kitted out in "Gitanes" t-shirts, "Real Madrid" jerseys, and "Club Disco New York" jumpers. They normally may not have been noticed, but at a posh hotel like the Oriental they stood out like like a pimple on the face of Gisele Bundchen.

I will also note that there is a huge difference the way Parisians dress as compared to the rest of the French. Of course, the average Parisian will be better dressed than the average person from Tours. Parisians have greater access to clothing stores, media, and the influence of the style-makers around them. People tend to dress like those in their orbit.

I dress for work one way, and when traveling (esp.in the U.S.), another; tourists anywhere can be spotted, I think (cameras, walking shoes, comfort clothes, etc.). However, some basics should hold anywhere; try not to look like a tramp (take that boths ways--hobo or "ho"), and always mind your manners!
