"Paris for Dummies"...
...Just hit the book shelves. Should be an interesting read!
|
I was at the bookstore the other day and they are beginning to have a massive collection of things for dummies. I'm beginning to wonder...

1) How large a market Dummies really represent? And...

2) How dumb can they really be if they read all of these books?! Quantum Physics for Dummies? Integrating Your Mainframe Legacy Lystem for Dummies? Genome Mapping for Dummies?

Do we WANT more dummies going to Paris? Are they REALLY dumb?

|
Like I said, "Should be an interesting read."
|
Hopefully, when they get done reading the "Dummies" book, they aren't, at least in that subject. I know when I was new in to computers, Dummies books helped me learn a lot, at least enough to get started and give me education enough to begin to understand the ones written by more "learned" people. Haven't had a chance to look at "Paris..." yet, and yesterday passed up a chance for another. Maybe I should . . .

Thanks Wendy, I bet that would be interesting.

And we could create our own version here...

Paris for Dummies Rule #1: When trying to get the attention of a waiter, do not yell out "Hey Frenchy!"
|
I don't know about Paris for Dummies but I'm thinking about buying "Dating for Dummies".
|
Hi All, I saw it at B&N and it was really pretty good, not like my Eyewitness guide to Paris, but pretty thorough for a newbie visitor.
They have Ireland for Dummies, London and Italy too!
I like my Wine for Dummies and my Internet for Dummies..... OK so I am a "Dummy",,, there, I said it!
Art, Don't they have a Dating for Dummies? <G> Judy ;-)
|
Judy,

What was it like? How to get around on
the metro etc...? Do tell!
|
Wendy: it was pretty good....had the typical dummies format(just like my wine and internet books. I just skimmed through both the Paris and Ireland books....WARNING to fans of Familia, Grande hotel des Balcons, Minerva, they are recommended in it, so they may become booked early and often.
I did not check out the Italy one, cause there were NO SEATS available... bummer, so I had to stand!
Judy ;-/
|
Capo-you just gave me my very first belly laugh from this board! Thanks!
Patti
|
Art: Do you need any help?? ;-)
|
<<When trying to get the attention of a waiter, do not yell out "Hey Frenchy!" >>

I thought you were supposed to yell, "Hey, Froggy." <VBG>
|
Yes! But don't forget to snap your fingers at him.
|
Isn't it, "Hey! Garcon!!!"
|
Perhaps there should be a video tape to go along with the book. Rick Steves has one on how to ride trains in Europe.
Seems like there is quite an art to buying the ticket, finding the right platform, finding seats. Important questions to be answered include:
1. Should we sit facing the direction the train is going?
2. In which direction are the rest rooms? [Some of those Swiss rail cars have two levels.]
3. Is there a place for our luggage?
4. Is this a smoking or non smoking car?
5. Do we know where to get off? How will we know?
6. Where is the flight attendant call button?
7. What did that 1 mean that was painted on the side of the car?

I think that 5th question is very important. One friend of mine was going to Florence, Italy. She saw the sign on the station that read "Firenze". So she kept on going.

A "hotel" isn't necessarily a hotel. Hotel de Ville, Hotel des Invalides..
|
I'm reminded of the Pizza Hut(?) commercial where the guy asks where to get asiago cheese. The Italian responds, "Scusi?", and the guy says, "Next stop Scusi!"
|
Or the story about P.T. Barnum who put up a sign "to the Egress"...

Or my own trip into Moronville: arguing with the clerk at the RER station that I wanted a ticket to CDG, not Roissy.
|
You guys have the greatest sense of humor! I am laughing out loud. Merci!
|
To Judy, yes there is actually a Dating for Dummies. I saw one several months ago on the cheap books table outside a Borders store.
Ursula, YES, I definitly need help. Just ask anyone that knows me.
Regards
Art
