AND?? did they jump on the tables?
|
Oh, and I tried couscous at Hôtel les Degrés de Nôtre Dame. The owner of the hotel is Algerian so it's authentic. Cannot compare with other couscous as this is the only place I've tried it but it was wonderful. 10 rue des Grands Degrés, just down the street from Le Reminet.

It sounded like a fun place but expensive. What did you friend say?
|
Well, I paraphrased but that's because she e-mailed me at work. I can quote here tomorrow from there. But she loved it! She, her husband, & 3 of her friends ate dinner there sometime around Christmas day.
|
Oh, and Les Degrés wasn't expensive at all. I recall couscous, a kir and a glass of wine at about 16€. And they're so nice there, too! Too bad the terrasse will be closed in February (I think) because it looks onto the lovely Square Restif de la Bretonne. I wrote about it on VT complete with photo:

Oh, and I forgot but I put my veg resto list on VT:

Mimi, can't post the travelogues here because they are photos. The reason I posted the link is because there are clickable links on the tips on VT that will lead you to more info. It's too bad Fodor's cannot support that. It's one of the reasons I started posting on VT - that & putting up photos! :)
<b><u>Vegetarian/Vegan in Paris</u></b> In Paris, it is rare to find a good vegetarian meal, much less a great one. Parisians are notorious omnivores & generally cannot fathom vegetarianism. About 2 years ago, I created a list of restaurants for 2 friends of mine (one of whom is vegan, one just straight vegetarian) that are vegetarian/vegan friendly for some vegetarian friends of mine. Happily, one of these restaurants is a 3-star gastronomic temple (Arpège) but the list also includes some wonderful budget finds (L'As du Falafel). I share the list with you. 1e <b>La Victoire Suprême du Cœur</b> 41 r des Bourdonnais Vegetarian Cadogan <b>Entre Ciel et Terre</b> 5 r Hérold vegetarian, 50% organic Cadogan 4e <b>Nectarine</b> 16 Place des Vosges quîches, crêpes, salads RS (one of my faves) <b>Aquarius</b> 54 r Ste-Croix-de-la-Bretonnerie steamed veg plates & veg tarts Frommer’s <b>L’As du Fallafel</b> 34 r des Rosiers fallafels RS <b>Picolo Teatro</b> 6 r des Ecouffes vegetarian RS, Frommer’s, Cadogan <b>L'Ebouillanté</b> 6 r des Barres (0)1 42 71 09 69 www.understandfrance.org/Paris 5e <b>Les Quatre et Une Saveurs</b> 72 r Cardinal Lemoine www.understandfrance.org/Paris <b>Gaudeamus</b> 47 r de la Montagne-Ste-Geneviève vegetarian, gourmet teas & coffees RS, Cadogan <b>Le Grenier de Nôtre-Dame</b> 18 r de la Bucherie vegetarian & macrobiotic Cadogan <b>Au Jardin des Pâtes</b> 4 r Lacépède for less strict vegetarians RS, Cadogan <b>La Petite Légume</b> 36 r des Boulangers vegetarian organic, produce for sale Cadogan 7e <b>L'Arpège</b> 84 rue Varenne 3-star veg resto, Chef Alain Passard Frommer’s, Cadogan, FLGP, Fodor’s 8e <b>La Maison Blanche</b> 15 av Montaigne some veggie dishes & fine dining on rooftops Frommer’s 10e <b>Da Mimmo</b> 39 bd Magenta best pizza in Paris Cadogan 11e <b>Le Bar à Soupes</b> 33 r Charonne small soup bar Cadogan <b>Haïku</b> 63 r Jean-Pierre Timbaud vegetarian organic-fresh pasta Cadogan <b>Le Souk</b> 1 r Keller Moroccan resto/salon de thé Cadogan <b>Tenshin</b> 8 r Rochebrune Japanese organic vegetarian Cadogan <b>La Ville de Jagannath</b> 101 r St. Maur Indian Vegetarian, Thai-style Frommer’s 13e <b>Tien Hiang</b> 20 r Nationale pure vegetarian restaurant 14e <b>Aquarius</b> 40 r de Gergovie soybean quenelles, tarragon cannelloni Frommer’s, Cadogan 16e <b>Ghislaine Arabian</b> 16 av Bugeaud some veggie dishes, famous female chef Frommer’s 17e <b>Il Baccello</b> 33 r Cardinet Italian 1st-rate veggie dishes Frommer’s, Fodor’s 18e <b>L’Eté en Pente Douce</b> 23 r Muller salads, veggie options, good wines RS (one of my faves) <b>Au Grain de Folie</b> 24 r la Vieuville salads, tarts, veg & rice dishes Frommer’s Cadogan - Cadogan Guides – Paris 2002 FLGP – Patricia Wells' The Food Lover’s Guide to Paris, Fourth Edition Fodor's - Fodor’s Gold Guide Paris Frommer’s – Frommer’s Irreverent Guide to Paris, 4th Edition RS – Rick Steves’ Paris For the best of the best, I'd go with the 3-star Arpège to see what a great chef can do with vegetarian fare. |

Years ago I ate at the Algerian restaurant, Wally le Saharien, when it was on the Ile St. Louis. I Googled it and see that it still gets good reviews but is now in the 9th, at 36, rue Rodier.
|
Entre Ciel et Terre has closed a few years ago. Piccolo Teatro is pretty good. Punjab is delicious. Following St Cirq's recommendation, I tried it and enjoyed. They serve a vegetarian platter for lunch for about 10 Euros.
Le Sept/Quinze is not vegetarian, but when I dined there they had 2 vegetarian dishes as main courses. They're located at 29 ave Lowendal in the 15th, not too far from the Invalides. Also, there's a vegetarian place at 81 ave de Breteuil, also in the 15th, which has an English name, maybe Laura's cookies. But it's a restaurant, not just a bakery. |
Thanks for the update, Keren!

This is what my friend had to say about 404 (no mention of jumping on tables but I'll ask her):
"OK...here's the poop. It's small, dark and cozy, but with a really high ceiling. The service was really riendly, but we were a group of 6 with 2 native speakers, and of course we were very entertaining. (Friends she went with) who have the apt on Ile St. Louis go there every time they visit Paris. I haven't been to any other Morrocan places in Paris, so I don't know how it compares. We started with a bunch of appetizers and then got tagines with a side of couscous. The only thing that I didn't like was their signature cocktail, which was sort of like a mint julep. I would have preferred a glass of champagne. For the appetizers, (friend) ordered this one dish with pigeon (much to our chagrin) but we loved it. It was layered with phyllo dough and baked and then sprinkled with powdered sugar. I know it sounds wretched, but it really was delicious. 404 was just written up in the NYTimes the weekend before we left so I'm sure it's going to be tough to get a rez...tell her to call soon." |
le Restaurant 404 is featured in today's International Living's Postcards from Paris.
69, rue des Gravilliers 75003 Metro Rambuteau with a Saturday and Sunday brunch for €21 served from 12-4. We'll be there next Sunday for brunch! |
ter, you don't want to go to the l'As du Fallafel. Tho the falafel gets rave reviews, it's more of a falafel stand, like the Nazi Kitchen on Seinfeld.

Mimi, my friend says SHE did not dance on the tables but another lady who was celebrating her 50th birthday DID!
This place sounds like fun! |
I thanked you in reply to your email but it was returned.
I think she's quoting this article I originally posted when it came out. http://travel2.nytimes.com/2005/12/1...aa&ei=5070 |
<b>NYTimes article:</b> Dec 18th-<i>"She is a young woman in black who is celebrating a birthday in official 404 fashion: by gyrating on top of the bar with her shirt halfway raised in an attempt at belly dancing..."</i>
I read that at the time Mimi .. lol. |
I think we have to be careful here.
Links are OK but Cutting and Pasting Lists of info from other sources is against the Fodors Rules. |
Well, when I do, I have permission. Someone would always jab me for it, little did they know.
That someone never critisized anyone else for doing it so I guess she just didn't like me. |
The list I cut & pasted is my own info.
Mimi, you're saying my friend quoted the NY Times article? I read it & I don't see the comparison. |
