Why do the bare trees against the sky seem different there, and the orange globe of the sun at 10 AM on the way to the Ecole du Louvre, and the houseboats on the Seine, with their herb-garden hats... And why does luminous Notre Dame at night astonish me so much more now than it (not yet cleaned, I know) did 40 years ago when I was a student... The smell of the crepes hasn't changed,or the sound of the dry yellow leaves underfoot in the Jardin du Luxembourg, and if anything the Fountain of Marie de Medici has only gotten more relaxed, as people read the news on folding chairs along the green-shadowed edges and children and adults all play hop-scotch on The World Seen From The Sky...
