Pajamas on Overnight Flights in Coach

I'll be leaving Saturday on an overnight flight from the Midwest US to France. I'll be flying in Coach. Would it appear odd if I changed into pajamas at the airport and wore them on the plane? Is it considered okay to do so?

ronkala Apr 28th, 2005 03:32 PM

why PJs?

FainaAgain Apr 28th, 2005 03:34 PM

A fluffy bathrobe can be okay too :*

kismetchimera Apr 28th, 2005 03:34 PM

are you for real?

seetheworld Apr 28th, 2005 03:35 PM

Unless you are a child under two, yes it would look odd to change into your jammies and walk around the airport. What about sweat pants?

TracyB Apr 28th, 2005 03:35 PM

I have never seen anyone on a plane with pajamas on!! However, I wear a warm sweat suit when I have an overnight flight..I don't think pj's are acceptable!

seetheworld Apr 28th, 2005 03:36 PM

Universitylad: Are you one of those students who wears pjs to class? I absolutely hate when one of my students comes to class in their pjs - it only makes me wonder if they have in fact brushed their teeth and washed.

allanc Apr 28th, 2005 03:38 PM

Only if they had teddy bears or Barbies on them. Try sweats.

Intrepid1 Apr 28th, 2005 03:45 PM

The one time when we need the Troll Police and they are too busy pretending to be world travelers..sigh!

rex Apr 28th, 2005 03:49 PM

I have read it in various travel guide books, as a suggestion - - and I think that a VERY small minority of passengers do change into sweats or something that might as well be pajamas... ON the plane (typically in the restroom... in your seat would be a little cramped quarters for most people).

As you are already reading... VERY few people actually do such a thing.

So... odd? yes. Okay? Yes also.

Best wishes,

Rex

universitylad Apr 28th, 2005 03:50 PM

Actually, I thought it might be more comforatable to sleep in than real clothing. I've never been albe to sleep well on overnight flights, and thought the pajamas might help.

J62 Apr 28th, 2005 03:53 PM

Lad,
I'm with you. The minute I get on the plane, whether flying coach or business, I change into a sleep clothes. Long sleeve shirt w/o buttons and elastic wasteband sleep pants. Usually I just wear plane ones (no pun intended) but sometimes I use pants with a pattern. Never gone all out with my bright paisley pj's and fluffy pink slippers - I do have a limit in public.

My main goal on an overnight flight is to sleep and I don't particularly care what the person next to me cares I wear. Sitting on a wallet or having a belt jab me the wrong way just isn't comfortable for me.

Also, I always eat a dinner before embarking, and get myself into sleep mode before the plane even leaves the gate, usually waking up just after takeoff to recline my seat and don my noise cancelling headphones.

I'm afraid some NY fashion magazine editor might find this odd unless they're paying for my ticket they don't really get a say in this matter.

starrsville Apr 28th, 2005 04:08 PM

I boarded behind a young lady wearing flannel plaid PJ bottoms, a long sweatshirt and clutching a pillow.

I think sweats would be far more "appropriate" - whatever that means nowadays.

No longer the days where one dressed up in their finest, including hats and gloves, to travel!

It will be O.K. I suppose if you also bring your BUNNY SLIPPERS

Dayle Apr 28th, 2005 04:16 PM

I really can't wait to hear what our self-appointed fashion nazi, Thingorjus, has to say about this one!

Seamus Apr 28th, 2005 04:18 PM

Several years ago I sat in first class with a rather well known US actress and her SO on a Paris to US flight, and we had a wonderful time chatting. After dinner they both excused themselves to change into sleepwear - she into silk and he cotton sweats - then bid us good night as they settled in. Just as breakfast was being served they awoke changed back in to street clothes. She commented that she got into this habit flying on private jets and now keeps to it when flying commercial.
So, if it is good enough for the front of the plane, why not for coach, where anything that can increase comfort is a godsend?

seetheworld Apr 28th, 2005 04:18 PM

lol, starrsville, I was thinking the exact same thing. My uncle used to wear a suit and bow tie when he traveled for pleasure. Ah, the good old days.

LoveItaly Apr 28th, 2005 04:24 PM

I think that PJ's were be preferrably to the "gentlemen" I saw disembarking from an international flight one time at SFO when we were going to pick up a friend. This fellow came through the door and there was a "dead silence" suddenly. He had on a white Tshirt and white boxer shorts and mens bedroom slippers and knee high black socks! I kid you not. The look on everyones face was hysterical. Could not believe the airline allowed it.

seetheworld Apr 28th, 2005 04:26 PM

LoveItaly, I hope that wasn't the pilot, lol!

AnselmAdorne Apr 28th, 2005 04:26 PM

There are airlines that pass out pajamas to their first class passengers on longhaul flights. There is a delicious irony that some would frown on this in "coach" while customers up at the pointy end are changing into comfortable sleepwear.

I haven't flown first class, but I have been in business class on trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific flights where other passengers have changed into pj-like clothing.

Anselm

seetheworld Apr 28th, 2005 04:27 PM

I am an equal opportunity pj frowner -- nay to both coach and first class :D

suze Apr 28th, 2005 04:29 PM

<Would it appear odd if I changed into pajamas at the airport and wore them on the plane?>

Yes, it would appear odd but I doubt anyone would stop you from doing so.

<I've never been albe to sleep well on overnight flights,>

Ask your doctor for a couple Valium or Ambien.

ahotpoet Apr 28th, 2005 04:39 PM

I think if someone has the option to be comfortable and possibly be able to sleep on a long haul flight by wearing loose roomy clothing rather than taking drugs I would encourage that. Notice I said loose roomy clothing, which is what plus size women have been doing for years

starrsville Apr 28th, 2005 04:40 PM

Aren't we glad universitylad has pajamas to change into...and doesn't sleep in the buff! :-)

tripgirl Apr 28th, 2005 05:12 PM

ok...

I'll admit I actually DID change into PJ's once! I did it on the plane in the bathroom and it was just fine. It did help me sleep.

HOWEVER now I have a lovely travel outfit that is just as good. It's from Chicos and is super comforatable like PJ's. It is a tank, pant and jacket, so dressing in layers helps when the cabin temp can change over the course of the flight.

To be honest although I was super comfortable in my PJ's and it did help, it was a pain to change and then change again.

Many yrs have passed and here are my strategies now to have a restful ride beyond just the clothes:

1. Stop caffeine 3 days prior to flight. Although I only drink tea, no colas or coffee, stopping my iced teas a few days before helps alot for me.
I also have a professional massage the morning of my flight. I've taken to stone massages over the yrs; love them!

2. Eat dinner before boarding the plane. Usually a turkey on whole wheat, small piece of fruit, water.

3. Lots of water on flying day ( although this is regular daily habit anyway)

4. As soon as I am settled in my seat, I take an Ambien. I still need this for sleeping on planes in spite of all these other preparations. It really helps me!

5. I do take off my shoes and place warm socks over my knee highs.

6. I wrap myself in my cashmere extra large wrap ( if anyone is interested, yes its pricey, but it doubles as an actual luxurious wrap I go out with. It is from white and warren: whiteandwarren.com) I think the blankets on planes are rather disgusting and much too thin.

7. I put on my Bose noise cancelling headphones and use the CD player to listen to some favorite music for about 1/2 hour.

8. Then I put on my eyeshades ( from Magellans.com)Set my watch to my destinations local time. Try to sleep until breakfast is served. I do carry something for breakfast with me and decline the food service.

9. Upon landing I spray my face with Evian spray, moisturize and spritz my hair with a combination of water and a drop of conditioner mixed in.

If I have a layover in let's say Heathrow, I always use the showers to refresh before boarding again to my final destination; does wonders!

Over the years I found adding more and more to my routine has helped tremendously beyond just being in comfortable clothing.

But if you decide to wear the PJ's I'll be silently smiling.

cigalechanta Apr 28th, 2005 05:19 PM

Hmmm, sounds like a Michel Jackson fan to me! :)

jsmith Apr 28th, 2005 05:38 PM

Nightshirts are much more comfortable but they have a tendency to ride up with wear. The summer variety are exceedingly prone to this but one would be out of fashion in July to wear long flannels.

ThinGorjus Apr 28th, 2005 05:39 PM

Well, laddy, why don't you just give yourself a Fleet enema in the middle of the aisle whilst you're changing into your jammies????? :)

Actually, I see nothing wrong with changing into pajamas on an overnight flight, as long as you change in the airplane WC and NOT in the airport. My Gucci, we are half undressed anyway with all this airport security. (I don't know why I even bother to wear shoes to the airport anymore.) Just make sure your pj bottoms are buttoned up so WEE WILLY WINKY doesn't make a surprise appearance whilst you are sleeping.

Pleasant dreams.

cigalechanta Apr 28th, 2005 05:46 PM

sleeping in chicos would be hell for me. I need natural fabrics.

tomboy Apr 28th, 2005 05:46 PM

Dear Michael
It was odd when you got your 79th facelift.
It was wierd for your face to have a different color than your body.
It was stranger yet to have men hold an umbrella over your head.
But PJs on an airplane?

LoveItaly Apr 28th, 2005 05:56 PM

About changing clothes (PJ/s) or anything in the airplane bathroom. Yuck! I find the bathrooms on airplanes so disgusting. Does anyone else?

Seetheworld, the pilot??? Oooh, I hope it wasn't either, LOL. Actually he was an older man and I think he had dementia perhaps. Noone seemed to be at the airport to pick him up. It was rather pathetic actually but I couldn't help but think of the incident thanks to this funny thread.
And always wondered who the "lucky" passengers were who got to sit by him.

ThinGorjus Apr 28th, 2005 05:59 PM

Somehow, and thankfully, Mimi, I just can't see you wearing Chicos. Even the name sounds like a taco stand.

AAFrequentFlyer Apr 28th, 2005 06:18 PM

Some of the best airlines in the world, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines, Qantas, etc... provide luxury PJs to their first class passengers. There is nothing wrong with wearing one on overnight flights. I have my favorite Cathay Pacific PJs with me whenever flying AA to Europe in business class. It's nice to have fresh, unwrinkled clothes to wear in the morning. The FAs will provide hangers for your clothes and will hang them in the closet. In coach you may actually have to ask for the hangers, but I can almost guarantee that there will not be any questions/puzzled looks from the FAs. The coach passengers? maybe, but who cares. :-)

P_M Apr 28th, 2005 06:28 PM

Somebody pick me up off the floor, I can't stop laughing at some of these replies!! :-))

LoveItaly, I know what you mean about airplane bathrooms. I like to take off my shoes for long flights, but I learned a long time ago to put them back on before going to the bathroom. There are some mistakes you only make once. :&

seetheworld Apr 28th, 2005 06:38 PM

Gross, gross, gross -- no changing in the bathroom, please! I always want to give the soles of my shoes a "bath" if I should have to use the plane facilities, lol!

bronxgirl Apr 28th, 2005 06:50 PM

Laughing at SOME of the replies ?? Reading this particular board was the funniest thing that happened to me all day today, especially the replies from ThinJorjus and Starrsville.

Hey, let's just through ALL fashion sense out of the window, dispense with (visual) consideration for our fellow passengers and just wear whatever we want. We're already appearing in the world wearing pants with the crotch around our knees, tiny tops cup up to THERE, low riders cut down to THERE (too much information, so to speak) so why stop at pajamas? All we need now are our fluffy bunny slippers and our blankies.

Nighty night and pleasant dreams to all in whatever YOU'RE wearing !!

Tiff Apr 28th, 2005 07:29 PM

U Lad,

As long as you aren't drooling on my shoulder I could care less what you have on. Feel free to get comfy.

Happy ZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, T.

p.s. To TripGirl, I LOVED your post, and was laughing, but will seriously try some of your sleep ideas, such as the headphones. I usually bring earplugs, but they don't always cancel out everything.

snorris Apr 29th, 2005 05:13 AM

You people are cracking me up! I've been laughing my b... off. Made my day. The fleet enema response was great. Brought back alot of memories from my nursing years.

SiobhanP Apr 29th, 2005 05:30 AM

My god I know its kind of uncomfortable flying but do you have to make yourself more comfortable in front of me than I see of most strangers. :-)

I would understand comfortable clothes and possibly changing of you are flying as far as Asia but can't you relax for a few hours without changing? Wear more comfortable clothes if you must.

I still like the person who's relative wore a bow tie travelling. Very cute.
