PagesJaunes - sigh....

What in the heck did they do to my favorite website? I hate it now. :-(
It is so cumbersome, and the photos don't display. I can still work the Photos.Pagesjaunes.fr site, but that's it.
It used to be so good.

nfldbeothuk Nov 25th, 2007 11:37 AM

My browser won't even display the photos.pagesjaunes.fr site. I thought it was wonderful when I discovered it.
Now it's vanished.
So I second the "sigh"

Hi T,

It's the usual changes caused by the people who operate the site becoming bored by the same ol same ol, so they "improve" it.

Happens with symphony orchestras, too.

They get tired of playing the Top 40, so we have to listen to what they want to play.

MyYahoo has also "improved" its format.

I'll third the "sigh" and add a boohoo!

Thanks, at least I'm not alone... :`(

It works in Firefox and a Mac. I typed in an address, it gave me a business and I am given the opportunity to see a photograph of the building.

Travelnut Nov 26th, 2007 05:53 AM

I'm 'given the opportunity' but the photo never shows up on the screen, just a big blank spot. The odd thing is, when the revamped site originally was rolled out, I could see everything.

kerouac Nov 26th, 2007 06:24 AM

Photos refused to load on my computer at home 3 or 4 months ago already (before the change of the site). Never any problem on my office computer -- I just checked again. It probably has something to do with security settings, a subject regarding which I am not an expert.

kerouac Nov 26th, 2007 06:31 AM

I also noted that there are no fewer than 8 photos of the building where I live. There used to be only 4. And there are little preview vignettes of the neighboring buildings under the big photo that is displayed. So if you can get the photos to work, they are considerably better than before.

cocofromdijon Nov 26th, 2007 06:33 AM

Do you use the same address as this one?
http://www.pagesjaunes.fr/trouverles...heClassique.do
It works perfectly well when I click on "plan" and "vue aérienne" below the address of a hotel for ex. Strange...

oakglen Nov 26th, 2007 06:41 AM

You need to click on "formulaire detaille". Works fine, with more pictures etc.

Michael Nov 26th, 2007 07:28 AM

The photo does show up on my screen.

MargrietVanderBanck Nov 26th, 2007 08:01 AM

Instead of pagesjaunes, go to www.mappy.fr. If you plug the address into the box labelled "Plan" at the top of left-hand column, it will give you a map of the immediate area with a small photo of the outside of the address you entered. If you click on "Voir plus," the picture is enlarged, and you can move along the street looking at the facades of other buildings. You can also find hotels, chambres d'hôtes, and branches of a number of companies, including McDonalds and BNP Paribas.

I used it yesterday with Firefox - no problem!

StuDudley Nov 26th, 2007 08:44 AM

Thr Gites-de-france site does not work with IE and a few other browsers, but works great with Firefox. Same with www.KarenBrown.com - which has a link to install Fire (which was a no-brainer to install & use).

I don't like the new one, either, it's just clunkier in terms of the way I usually search for things. I can still do what I want, but now have to go to a special page to do an advanced search instead of the main one. I really don't know why they left out the address portion on the main page, that's the main way I search.

However, I've never had any trouble displaying photos on the new site in any browser I use.

Christina Nov 26th, 2007 08:53 AM

oh, I just use www.pagesjaunes.fr and then (usually) formulaire detaile where you can type in an address.

I just looked at it right now, and had no trouble seeing the photos on a search that way, nor if I just fill in a few things in the "express" form, either.

lauraallais Nov 26th, 2007 09:00 AM

I have found maps.google.com to be extremely helpful. They have photos and really easy tools to search for businesses near an address. It was great for getting an idea of the area around the Paris apartment we have booked for May.

kerouac Nov 26th, 2007 09:26 AM

Aha! My home computer also gives the photos with no problem now. Don't even need to go to the detailed form -- you can just type an address into the second box (such as "101 av. des Champs Elysées, Paris 8") without putting anything in the first box and you will get a reply that lets you look at the photographs.

Travelnut Nov 26th, 2007 09:53 AM

Where is it on maps.google.com that you can put in an address and get a photo? the only links I see are for "map / satellite / hybrid"..

Also, don't see any photo or place-holder on Mappy.fr for a given address...

and - I believe I need an updated Flash player, but of course, can't download anything on my work computer.
