Michael, that place looks fantastic but it's a <i>little</i> beyond the budget (for this trip anyway).

Muck, enjoy Prague. Looks like I will be visiting Oradur sur Glane and Limoges first, in late March. Will report back.

And emh, you have no idea how much this thread has helped me. We are spending roughly the same amount of time in the Dordogne is you, so I've been stealing advice.

We are staying in Paris and hope to take a day trip to Oradour-sur-Glane, transportation-wise how is this best achieved?

Thanks.

I think it is a bit of a stretch for a day trip from Paris. It's a number of hours to Limoges by train and then a car trip. I have no idea of any tour to it--might be.
We went because we were in Limoges.

Mappy says 400 km from centre of Paris to Oradour - not a day trip by car. They actually figure you can do it in 4 hours, but I wonder.

I coudn't get the SNCF site to recongize Oradour, and so I suspect there is no longer service from Limoges (there used to be - some victims of the massacre had jsut got off the tram from Limoges.)

It's well worth seeing, but you will need more time to get there.

thanks for the info. what would be a good website to see the train schedule for paris for destinations such as limoges? and what would be a good website for checking out renting a car in paris? finally, what website would allow me to map destinations ala mapquest from paris? any info would be greatly appreciated.

For train schedules, see http://www.voyages-sncf.com

For road maps, see viamichelin.com or mappy.com.

For renting a car in Paris, try autoeurope.com (although I am sure there are many others).

RE: Round-trip public transport Limoges to Oradour sur Glane

Michael Williams' oradour.info website suggests the option of taking the bus from Limoges Benedictins to Oradour sur Glane but offers no details. Would anyone have first-hand information or be able to suggest a website regarding such a process or options?

Also, if anyone has taken a taxi from Limoges to Oradour sur Glane, any information regarding the fare, the commute time and accessability of hailing a taxi in either direction would be most appreciated...

If I recall correctly it is at least a half hour, maybe 45 minute ride by chartered bus we took. Could be a sizeable taxi fare, plus the waiting time to walk around and experience this village tragedy.

As mentioned above we went to Prague instead.

I was fortunate to visit what is left of the village of Lidice. This has a similar history of being wiped out by Nazis.

Interesting, worth a visit and very very sad.

Oradour one day soon.

Heinz Barth, one of the principal participants in the Oradour massacre, finally died yesterday. He was freed from prison in 1997. (He had only gone to prison in 1983, after being convicted by the East German authorities for war crimes.)

I shall make a point to visit this place next year.

No remorse!

Why was he sprung after 14 years? If ever LWOP were appropriate, it's with this scum.

(<i>p.s.</i> I hear the Christian belief is that if one is truly remorseful and repents, hell is not inevitable.)
