Oradour sur Glane
Hey everyone, comments on seeing Oradour sur Glane outside of Limoges as a stopover on our drive between Sarlat and Amboise?
If so, then would we just take the N147 to Poitiers and up to Sarlat? Or would it be doable to stop at St. Savin also and then go up by Chateauaroux and to Sarlat on the A20/E9? Would this be a waste of time adding this on or pushing it too much? I have been hearing that Oradour sur Glane is pretty humbling? Comments? Thank you. emh |
www.viamichelin.com suggests staying on the A20 to Limoges before branching off to Oradour. And, yes, it is indeed worth a visit.

Incredible site, unforgettable and haunting. I was so moved I felt I should not take a single picture out of respect for those that were slaughtered.

We visited Oradour-sur-Glane during a two week stay south of Limoges. It was one of the most memorable days of a 14-month trip to Europe. We spent maybe three hours at the site.
You can read about our impressions on my blog: http://www.slowtrav.com/blog/kaydee/...es/000690.html (scroll down to Wednesday). And there are a couple of photos beginning here: http://www.slowphotos.com/photo/show...9&cat=3394 Kathy |
I would take smaller roads over to the D704 and then straight down through St Yrieix la Perche, Hautefort, into Sarlat. If you check viamichelin, it will tell you how to get from Oradour to St Yrieix. That part of the D704 is very pretty, and takes you right past the chateau d'Hautefort - quite spectacular.
Definitely see Oradour if you can - it;s incrediby moving. |
I wrote my visit last month in my trip report:

Your question is confusing geographically speaking. You speak of a drive between Sarlat and Amboise, presumably going from Sarlat. Then you talk about going to Chateauroux on the way to Sarlat? Check a map of France and you will see that Poitiers--St. Savin--Oradour-sur-Glane do not lead you to Chateauroux. Why Chateautoux? It's out of the way.

I turned off the motorway and headed along a fairly small road to Oradour sur Glane. It was about twice as far as the first signpost said (I kept wondering if I'd gone past it). There are better routes as I found out when I left it.
At the site, you park across the road, down stairs, through a museum which documents the atrocities, then through a tunnel under the road to the remains of the town. |
Sorry, I meant to say on to Amboise. Okay, it definitely is a must to see Oradour sur Glane. So we will go from there to N147 up to Poitiers and then up through Tours to Amboise. Unless there is something else along the way to see?
Thank you for all your comments. This all sounds very interesting and humbling. emh |
Here is one of the photos I snapped there several years ago. My only disappointment was that they added some broken dishes otherwise quite moving.

It won't let me pull up the picture. It says album not found?

We drove from Amboise to Lalinde several years ago, stopping at O-s-G on the way. As others have said, it is not to be missed.
Just wanted to mention a stop we made in Mortemart to eat at Le Relais, a Bib Gourmand choice. We had a lovely lunch inside a walled garden. One of the more memorable meals of that trip. As we were southbound, we ate before the visit to Oradour. I'm not sure I would have been able to eat, much less enjoy a meal, afterwards though. |
Hi eholden123
Whilst on the topic of Oradour sur Glane, I hope you dont mind me asking some questions too? I am now planning a few days in Limoges, with a view to visit O SG,Can anyone recommend a comfortable and reasonably priced hotel up to about €100. I will be with my 16 yr old daughter so somewhere suitable for her to walk around alone if she wishes. We will fly in to Limoges airport. I also want to pick up a hire car in Limoges, any recommendations/suggestions? Thanks Muck |
Muck,
Europcar has an agency right at the airport. That's where I dropped off my car. |
In the off chance you'll return to this thread, Mucky, have you settled on a hotel in Limoges? Any great leads/finds?
We will be spending one night in the vicinity or in Limoges itself. |
Leely, for a splurge, try the Moulin de la Gorce.

Thanks for the hotel tips, I have had to delay our trip. We are going to Prague instead, simply because flights were more suitable, but we are planning to do the O SG trip later in the year. At which time I will return.
Many thanks emh for hijacking your thread, (just a little) Muck |
My pleasure, I have done the same. Whatever helps, right?!
