I'm drifting off the subject here but...

Surprisingly, nearly 4 years ago I had my Swiss Army knife confiscated (yes, it was in my CHECKED luggage!)

Since then I dont pack a knife at all. Instead I buy one when I arrive at my destination. It is not uncommon to find a reasonably priced pen knife, sometimes with the logo of the city or country where I am. They are rarely very expensive (or of very high quality) but they work well enough for slicing cheeses or meats for making sandwiches and the regular small jobs.

When I travel I also keep a very small box in my room ready for mailing. On my final day or the day before I drop in the knife along with other knick-knacks, mark the customs label souvenirs and mail it to myself at home.
