We used a scandia bag (ordered from Barnes and Noble catalog), much like a messenger bag, in Paris. It can unzip to accommodate more (wider), has a back pocket, front flap with zipped pocket, ties down, two pockets under the flap, wide canvas strap, across the chest. Pretty convenient, but the canvas doesn't hold its shape which made it somewhat awkward to get into easily. Took both of us holding onto it to get to anything; I'd defy a pickpocket to get into it any easier. I'm looking for the same type that holds its shape better. A backpack doesn't offer any better access or more convenience in my opinion. But when it comes to weight distribution, it's certainly better.

Chris, <BR> <BR>Just from watching Rick Steeves and seeing his bag (also on his internet site)and comparing it to the "Swiss Army" rolling backpack, I don't think you can compare the two. The quality on the Victronix bag is outstanding. I bought my 1st one for our trip to Italy this fall. I'll do a "test pack" to see if the size is appropriate and purchase a second one for my husband. We don't have appropriate luggage for travelling (one extra large rolling case) and we expect to begin travelling to Europe hopefully yearly. I don't expect to need new luggage for a very long time. Sometime's you get what yo pay for.
