October - December - Paris, Part !!

I have arrived!! Trip pretty normal. Comfort Seats do have more space and the head rest can push sides in to help you in trying to sleep...

Driver was there, as always. Called office and said I was on way and while driving in they called to say that Elle had arrived. When I got to the office it was decided that my driver would just deliver us to the apt., which he did. Then Elle and I walked down to Flirt The and it was packed. We did have a table..dined and wined and caught up on much.

Decided to meet Florent at the Orange Phone store a Ecole Militiare area and pick up a cheap Paris phone and Sim card..meet him at 6:30. Will take camera!

I'm pooped!! The weather is perfect, perfect, perfect!! Blue, blue sky and super!!

a bientot...

Wow Joan...I haven't been able to read the travel boards in a long time due to a family illness and traveling back and forth to help out. It was fantastic that the first post I see is from you and that you've returned to Paris. I can't wait to read more about your wonderful meals/friends/adventures...looking forward to them...a great diversion from what I've been doing! Enjoy every minute of you time.

Joan is here! Run for cover! :-))

framboise_et_rose Oct 14th, 2011 02:43 PM

Glad you have arrived a little more rested than before. Pooped, I understand - it is the length of the trip but now the FUN begins.

Eagerly awaiting all the daily activities!

bisous,
Lilia

Say hi to Daniel if you get to Spring.

Love all of your restaurant reviews and food photos. You tend to dine at places above our budget, but I enjoy your take on them.

sueb08 Oct 14th, 2011 07:27 PM

Joan, I am happy to hear you arrived in Paris. I am getting anxious to join you. We had a cold blustery day here in Wisconsin.
I do have the comfort seats reserved for my trip.
Enjoy!!

gracejoan3 Oct 15th, 2011 12:37 AM

Joan it is always such a nostalgic pleasure to read your reports. Could I make one suggestion to help the enjoyment? Add brief titles to your photos...people not familiar with the area can't relate to the beautiful building at the beginning of Dupont des Loges across from the old Jaguar dealer, or the charming old non-functional (or have they finally got it to work?) clock tower off Ave. Rapp. Keep them coming in any case; you bring back such a flood of memories. As you know, I spent several months living above that very bakery.

gracejoan3 Oct 15th, 2011 03:39 AM

Just to make sure that I ruin your meals for the day!!

Joan, you really do hit the ground running! Thanks for ID'ing the photos; your photography is getting very good, focused and well composed. That seabass has me salivating.

ParisJo Oct 15th, 2011 04:46 AM

Laidback said "That seabass has me salivating."

As do those impossibly creamy mashed sweet potatoes under it! I've got to get to Cafe Constant at some point. I think we made it to the left bank only twice this trip.

Love the photos, keep them coming!

Hi,

With the time difference from this direction I really play havoc with your meals...should you read before or after eating!!

I do plan to try many that I have not been to before. When doing that, I often try lunch first. Pottoka just worked out for dinner better as they do not serve lunch on Monday. I know I would not have to do a 'trial' lunch at l'Os a Moelle with Stephane, but will give me a chance to say hello, congratulate him the his new venture and be ready to go for dinner, too, during this stay!

Tomorrow, I will see...a Constant or maybe Pasco or another..who knows what the day might bring!!

Joan...so funny...I thought the !! was on purpose...it's a great play on the excitement and part II.

I am debating whether I should allow Chaz (aka Mr. Starbucks) to see those photos for Connie. I think I will send him to Starbucks on his own and he can bring me back pain au chocolat to the Kir.

So looking forward to hearing more from you and to get there (35 days for us)!

gracejoan3 Oct 16th, 2011 04:44 AM

Hi Denise...

Connie is the manager of the Starbucks in an Ingles Market and I stop there often. She asked if I would stop by. I think the board said the caffe latte was 3.50 euros and at home it is 3.50 dollars..so there is your difference in price. The St. Dominique one has lots of seating space in it and they. do a good business!! If Chaz nees his morning exercise and want to walk to Starbucks fine, but I would turn the corner onto Bourdonnais and go the short block to the boulangerie/patisserie for whatever. In fact I went there often in the morning and they have many tables..they serve meals at this one...

I am going to an Italian restaurant tonight..early reservation. Caffe Romantica on La Tour Mauborg just off ave Tourville..near Ecole Militaire and Florent's Flirt The. Will check it out! I want to do some new restaurants this trip and see what I find. Will be back with some pics later and a review of a new place.

Glad you thought my exclamation points were planned and not however they happened. I was tired after arrival, but a long ways from an I on the keypad!!!

Bright blue sky again today..cool air and early mornings and evenings are chilly..

Enjoying your nice pics.....what are you using for a camera as they are so nice and clear. Making me homesick for that area and we have to wait until May to get there. will we be close to the pastry shop for morning pain au chocolate while staying in Kir?
Have fun.

lrock5 Oct 16th, 2011 06:46 AM

I just bought tickets for Paris over the Christmas. We are so excited. I am following your adventures Joan and making notes on restaurants as we plan to have some very lovely meals while we are there.

lrock5 Oct 16th, 2011 06:47 AM

Should have been Holiday. I must be too excited to type

gracejoan3 Oct 16th, 2011 08:23 AM

Cornelius and Irocks,

The camera is just a very simple Kodak Easy Share C613 and I am very much of a novice in taking pictures!

I am trying many new restaurants this trip..along with good standbys..like all 3 of Christian's restaurants. I enjoy them in all price ranges, from very simple to the 3 stars, so can help you at any price range with some photos, etc.

Cornelius, the person Denise is also staying in the Kir and those directions were for her while there. Only a block away for some morning goodises at a good patisserie. A good little grocery store in between for quick needs and larger one down on St. Dominique.

Plan some Commerce area shopping with a Monoprix and great grocery store on upper level, many nice shops to wander in and out of. The Grenelle market also in the area. A convenient walk or hop on the 42 bus.

Many restaurants in the area. I will be checking out some there, this trip.

Your enthusiasm is so infectious. You should be paid by the Chamber of Commerce!
Thanks for your ongoing travelogue and restaurant reviews!

Joan, I can't wait for your review of L'Os a Moelle. We are so looking forward to going back there in December.

Joan, Were you able to walk there from your apartment? Would like to add that on to our list for May.

gracejoan3 Oct 16th, 2011 12:15 PM

A short walk!! Pasco's is just down the street from it. It is also open on Sunday..lunch and dinner. Caffe Romantica only open for dinner on Sunday. I do like Pasco's too. Nice spot and no jammed in tables..and very peopular with locals..as my friends Florent and Michaael told me when there with me..the clientel was not only all French but 7th French!! That was meaningful to them! We do not dine before 8 and closer to 8:30!

Oh, the weather...much warmer this evening than all day....

Hi Marcy,

I am keeping busy! Will go to Pottoko for dinner tonight. Think I will wander down Commerce way later today.

I just changed my laptop clock as all my postings and email were going out with EST instead of Paris time!

Thanks Joan...I am sure Chaz will be going to Starbucks just like has does everyday (and there, which I discourage to no avail). I usually get to a patisserie for my pain au chocolat and then we take it to Starbucks. I have more plans to force him out of Starbucks this trip, Flirt The is one of them! I do have to yield to this habit of his, as I can't give up my coke light, while there. So glad the Italian restaurant was good. Love the reports and pictures.

RobertaL Oct 17th, 2011 04:54 AM

Bon jour, Joan! Welcome back to Paris! As usual, you are off to a fabulous start. The pics are great, especially since the neighborhood is so familiar to me. The Italian place looks very good. May have to try it next time. Please send my regards to Florent!

Dear Joan,

As Monsieur Laidback said, a caption on the pictures will help but I was so glad that you took that picture from the corner of rue Dupont des Loges. I think that's the same view I had in our apartment at rue Sedillot oh so long ago.... Nice reminder, thank you!

Nice to have the picture of Florent and Michael - they look so trim! Guess that will change as they will be joining you in your restaurant adventures (lol).

Love the food pictures. It's a good thing I've already had my lunch........ Can't wait to have that lunch at Christian's with you when we arrive. Keep them coming, svp!

Jim - that makes me salivate, too inspite of the fact that I already ate.

Good Morning!!

I did go to Pottoka. Arrived and they did not have record of my reservation..but not a problem!

I think that they may be trying to do too much with having the two restaurants. I know there have been some rather bad reviews of Fables recently. Time will tell.

I may have made a mistake in ordering the pigeon! This was tough old bird..maybe one who dropped dead outside their front door??

I was not over impressed, but will give another try!!

Cathinjoetown Oct 18th, 2011 12:05 AM

Joan,

Looks like you're having a wonderful time. Following your adventures is a much-needed pick-me up as the days close in.. Right now, gorgeous weather continues.

Finally made it to Le Bibent in Toulouse, a much-needed, imo, addition to Place Capitole. The day was very hot so we only ordered small plates, but everything very good. M. Constant should be congratulated. Prices are just about what the Toulouse traffic will bear.

The amazing space has been beautifully conserved with a few modern touches, over-large vases, etc. Doubt air conditioning would be practical but it would be welcome. The loos are up a narrow stairwell,
one group had to leave because one of the women needed wheelchair access. Given the space, I don't see any way there could be an accessible toilet. I imagine the kitchen had to be shoe-horned in. www.maisonconstant.com

gracejoan3 Oct 18th, 2011 01:13 AM

Cathinjoetwon,

I sent your message to Catherine just for them to see what people might be saying..I then had this reply:

"Thanks for hte comments. FYI there is air conditioning it’s been built into the woodwork and it works really well even though the ceiling is EXTREMELY high. It’s true that the upstairs ‘loo’ is a big problem but we had nowhere else to put it, because of all the building restricitions, it’s a listed building, we can’t opend doorways or anything, and cathinjoetown is also right when she says the kitchen was shoe horned in. It is tiny. A real effort of self control/ and organization on the part of the chefs."
