Novels set in Venice

What are your favorite novels set in Venice?

Sue Jan 7th, 2003 06:39 AM

Thomas Mann's Death in Venice.

Eye Spy Jan 7th, 2003 06:42 AM

THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY by Patricia Highsmith is also a great read and the novel is much, much better than the movie (and thankfully we don't have to put up with Gwyneth Paltrow in the novel!). I second DER TOD IN VENEDIG by Thomas Mann (DEATH IN VENICE).

Miss Garnett's Angel, by Sally Vickers.

Howard Jan 7th, 2003 07:49 AM

Read Wings of the Dove and then rent the movie. The combination will give you a great feel for Venice.

Young/adult kid novel called The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke

brah Jan 7th, 2003 10:23 AM

Oh yes, Miss Garnett's Angel by Sally Vickers! It it the reson that we went to Venice last September and the reason that we are returning in March! She just makes the city come alive. I have read it 3 times. that's a record as I read constantly and rarely ever repeat. I found it the first time in our library and then ordered 2 copies from Amazon.com and have given them away now. READ IT!!!

"Q" by the Italian writers combo Luther Blissett (later called Wu Ming). The third parti is set in a colorful XVII century Venice. Great. Unluckily the novel has not been translated to English yet.

Thanks. Has anyone read the Thief of Venice by Jane Laughton?

Eye Spy Jan 7th, 2003 10:53 AM

And how could I have forgotten Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice"?

Howard Jan 7th, 2003 11:21 AM

Tsk, tsk, Eye Spy. The Merchant of Venice isn't a novel!

Dan Jan 7th, 2003 11:26 AM

Thank you so much for your responses.

Eye Spy Jan 7th, 2003 11:30 AM

Howard, I didn't say that THE MERCHANT OF VENICE was a novel. I was merely pointing out it was a piece of literature I had overlooked. Are you that picky? Because if you are, we can all take apart some of your responses on previous posts and then how would you feel?

tsk tsk Jan 7th, 2003 12:30 PM

Just for that

mimi Jan 7th, 2003 12:35 PM

that's ok, eye, I'll throw in some films like:"Don't Look Now", with Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie.
"The Comfort of Strangers"with Christopher Walkin, Natasha Richardson
Ruppert Everett and wardrobe by Armani.
These are two dark stories.

Book Chick Jan 7th, 2003 12:38 PM

Hi Dan,
I would highly recommend a novel entitled "Vaporetto 13". Very intriguing.

Best wishes,
BC
