It seems to me that any site that requires re-setting one's display is not a good one. One should not have to know about pixil dimensions or removing toolbars or anything else.

Paulo Jan 17th, 2001 10:48 AM

Patrick, this is just a hunch. I guess that for some technical reasons, the site is actually (kind of) off and on and response time may be either low or high. One way to "cheat" the application is to hit the stop button as soon as you perceive that your message has been succesfully posted. In other words, you don't let the application load the new page.

Walter, I have no idea how the webtv stuff works. Is javascript supported? I would guess (maybe wrong) that Fodors new application won't work properly without it.

Paulo

Judy Jan 17th, 2001 11:15 AM

Wholey Moley, What is going on? Paulo(our hero) seems to know what's what? Patrick, same thing for me. Nancy: your husbands's monitor is now yours...
Judy with the googily eyes!

Paulo Jan 17th, 2001 11:17 AM

Walter,

Once you're able to read the content of the first thread that appears in the left frame, there's a way around it, though admitedly a real pain ...

I don't know if everybody noticed it, but now the thread numbering in the left frame doesn't stop at 50. If you load the next 50, the numbering will continue and not reset. Of course, this number is dynamic (it changes every time anything is posted).

Look at the content of the following URL

http://www.fodors.com/forums/threadselect.cfm?fid=2&tid=0&start=1&r ows=50&sort=date

start=1 means the the list in the left frame should start with the thread that is on top. You may change this number (5, 17, 1001, etc), and display the thread that is currently the 5th, 17th etc in the dynamic list first, in the left frame. The application will then load the content of this thread for you automatically. Of course, if while you're doing this operation somebody posts anything, you won't get what you expected :-(

A possible better way (though still a pain) to get what you want is the following:

Does webtv enables you to see the URL if you browse over a URL? If it lets you know the URL relative to a link, you're in business. Fodors new application designates a unique number for each thread. For instance, this thread is identified by the number 1270826.

Now, consider the following URL

http://www.fodors.com/forums/threadselect.cfm?fid=2&tid=1270826

the tid= identifies the unique thread number. If you know the thread number of the thread you're interested, you may load it directly!

Like I said: "a real pain ... but better than nothing!"

Paulo

I seem to be getting errors about 50% of the time, and haven't managed to reach the Latin America board at all!
However the banner is small and not intrusive on my screen

Eva Jan 17th, 2001 11:39 AM

I really liked the old format!! I agree with most of the previous posting about big banners and white space, but what I find the most dissapointing is the fact that I can't check by geographical area!
Fodors, please bring the feature back!!!!

Paulo Jan 17th, 2001 11:47 AM

Eva, you're very generous :-) I'm having errors more like 80% of the time!

I've had no problems getting to the Latian American forum, though. Try following the link below (and keep trying because the system is very unstable):

http://www.fodors.com/forums/threadselect.cfm?fid=6

Paulo

Paulo Jan 17th, 2001 11:50 AM

Oops ... I mean, Ann!

Uh Oh. Jan 17th, 2001 11:54 AM

Top Ten Reactions To The New Format:

1. Having to click on the scroll bar again and again because text doesn't fit on the screen.

2. Things that blink.

3. Kinda white and bright.

4. "Jump to most recent post" button adds nothing. It was possible to do this before by hitting CTRL + PG DWN.

5. Banner.

6. That Fodors did not announce this change. I kept clicking on my "Favorites" button for Fodors and assumed the site was down. In fact, everyone else was having fun without me.

7. Too many error messages.

8. Why would I want the option to see the threads with the most responses? Maybe so I can just "top" these really long threads and annoy everyone and thereby play a hilarious practical joke?

9. REALLY like the fact that it remembers my screen name. Let's see if it will let me post under this fake name and then let me revert back to my usual one.

10. No one said what "Home" "Mobile" in the upper right hand corner means. Any ideas?

Oh well.

Hi Fodor's,
Granted it's different. I love the jump to most recent post option. Never can manage to hit Ctrl page down! It seems to be a tad slower, but that could be systems issues that will resolve. Banner doesn't bother me at all. Whiteness and reading text doesn't seem an issue for me either.
I am getting a lot of error messages as well, but that may be systems issues as well.
I assume you guys have worked very hard on this. Good Work, but it will take a little adjustment.

Cindy -- It's true that if you remove the toolbars, you can see more. But I don't want to remove my toolbars -- I like my "back" button and use it a lot. But if I leave my toolbars up there, with the newly-enormous banner at the top, the actual content of the site takes up only the bottom 50% of my screen, which I think is a pretty crummy percentage.

Walter Jan 17th, 2001 12:29 PM

Paulo: As usual thanks!!!, you do have a knack for figuring things out:) and thanks for e-mailing that post to me with your instructions. Webtv is only a remote keyboard and a small box hooked to my TV & phone lines. It works for me as it's *very* easy to operate and I'm computer illiterate. I can access most everything and have booked and researched my last 4 vacations and now the 5th with no problems. Except I can't access Java which you mentioned Fodors is now possibly using. But I followed your advice and I can access the threads by using that URL and changing the thread number that's the only option that will work. I just have to be quick and hope nobody posts in those few seconds:). Perhaps it's time to get a computer:), maybe after vacation. Thanks Again! Regards, Walter

Paulo Jan 17th, 2001 12:29 PM

Well, Uh oh. It's clear to me that new application for Travel Talk is designed to allow full navigation capability in all of its pages (contrary to the old application). Granted that a forum fodorite could care less if he's able or not to jump directly to other services offered by Fodors. But this appears to be the trend in site design ... to keep a certain unity.

To check what the home and mobile are all about (they do appear in all Fodors site pages), just click on them :-)

Paulo

angel Jan 17th, 2001 12:35 PM

21" Trinitron monitor -- and more difficult to read than old style.

Maybe this will help me with my addiction.......
nancy Jan 17th, 2001 12:42 PM

Well , my goodness!
Thanks to Paulo and XX, I have now learned a new thing on my computer, and thanks, now that I have changed Pixels, I can view lines of print without scrolling, BUT, I am now faced with the dilemnia that Patrick and others have,
I can't read what is posted, and I am wearing my glasses!!
Judy,
Monitor is mine, all mine !! until he comes back home tomorrow,
then either employ guile and wile or skip right to the whining and begging!:)

gail Jan 17th, 2001 12:49 PM

HATE IT! out of 7.5 inches available on my screen, 3.5 is taken up with header, banner, spots to click that you could get to other ways, etc. And the worst is that you have to scroll left and right for every line. This is really terrible. Who's responsible for the change? Can we send him on a trip to someplace really really boring for a couple of years as punishment?

Greg Jan 17th, 2001 12:51 PM

Although it seems to be quite slow right now (probably due to the large number of people posting their complaints about how slow it is :>), I have to say I really do like the "E-mail this thread to a friend" option. I am constantly copying a thread of interest and e-mailing it to myself so I can keep all the information together. This will make it much easier.

Nano Jan 17th, 2001 12:56 PM

I really don't like the new format. It's much too bright for my aging eyes and the blue colored questions are too hard to distinguish from the lines below them. What was wrong with the old format? If it ain't broke...

nancy Jan 18th, 2001 11:15 AM

well, I jumped to this posting right away,
and the only thing I can comment on at this time is that the problem with the pixels/lines of print being too long has been fixed.
My husband's monitor is safe!!!
Thank you fodors!
