sam86 : hm yea good idea, but i was thinking to take the long journey from milan, so Lauterbrunnen-Milan (by bus or train) then Milan-Barcelona (night train EN372 19:40 arrive 09:43 next morning - this is no change train, so a very good night sleep haha)

As for Lauterbrunnen and staying in they valley. Lauterbrunnen will be dark for a lot of the day due to sitting in the shadow of the mountain. We spent several days in Wengen and loved it...next summer we'll be staying in Murren on the other side of the valley.

If you look down in the dark valley on the right side of the photo...that's where Lauterbrunnen is.

Meihan, I'm from California. It's pretty much a desert here - hot and dry but people come here for the beach and the nice weather.

October is my favorite month to travel to Europe. It's a little on the cool side but the trees are starting to turn and it's beautiful. You may have a few days of rain and the sky won't be blue but it's still lovely.

If you really want to see snow, go in the wintertime. Our first trip to Germany was in March and it was great. Snow is amazing, especially if you've not experienced it, it‘s so quiet.

But let me ask this.. Are the cliffs on the east n west side of the valley? Well if yes, you r right, the valley would be shadowy most times, except on noon time when sun is on the peak..

Well I may have overstated the shadows in Lauterbrunnen...it would be sunny for most of the morning and into the afternoon a bit. I've only been there once so I don't want to come off as experienced in this area.

One of the best ways you can appreciate this area w/out going there is with Google Earth. Make sure you have the Terrain turn on and you'll see the difference in Lauterbrunnen vs Wengen or Murren. I couldn't plan a trip now without Google Earth.

One thing that I think would be nice about Lauterbrunnen is it's in the middle and would shorten your travel times if you planned on going up both sides. If you were going to try and see both mountain tops (Junfrauch and Schilthorn) then staying in the valley may be good. But for us the reason we came to this valley was for the dramatic views and I just don't think they'll be as spectacular from down in the valley.
