I've only taken a train from Genoa as far as Pisa. South of Pisa I've only driven the route. The train track boards the shore , than more inland, then close to the sea once again ... I would guess it's pretty scenic. <BR> <BR>It looks like your original plan would be on. You'd be trading Livorno for Savona on day 4 ... On day 9 you'd be in Livorno at 6pm ... I doubt that you'd be able to get a car in the evening. You'd almost for sure would have to sleep in Florence and get the car next morning.
