Can you name this castle in Germany/ I've sent an e-mail to the web site owner with no response, so I figure someone here will know.

I'm interested to find out. I'd love to go there.
|
Neuschwanstein??
|
It's not Neuschwanstein.
|
St. Cirq - I don't think it's Neuschwanstein - wrong colour!
here's the link for pics of Neuschwanstein: http://www.google.co.uk/search?sourc...astle+pictures i had a look at Bill's Bauernhof - I've seen it before - but had to turn it off quickly as the music was so overpowering! Why do they do that? |
Hohenzollern Castle in South West Germany.

It is beautiful. I want to go there too.
|
What a great fast response. Thanks Alec, that's it. I think I'll go there.

Hohenzollern is a great looking castle above the town of Hechingen in Baden-Württemberg. Sadly Bill of Bill's Backroads (a member of my Stammtisch group) passed away this year. He wrote some interesting columns for Ben's Bauernhof up to a few years ago - then started developing his own website to assist travelers to Germany. And you are right annhig - loud music on websites is overpowering and can be distracting. I've been eliminating most of the music on my site... Ben

I had never heard of or had seen this castle until my wife bought me "Visions of Germany" on DVD. That's one of those helicopter European tour movies you often see on PBS or playing on huge screen TV's at Best Buy. It looks even more gorgeous in the video. We're hoping to make it there next time we visit Germany.
Very sorry to hear about Bill. I enjoyed his musings. |
The official website with all information for visitors: http://www.preussen.de/en/today/hohe...rn_castle.html

Sorry to hear about Bill. His site has lots of great invormation and I've read it several times. I also refer to Ben's site for great information about Germany. Thanks Ben, keep us the good work.

Yes, Neuschwanstein is almost white if I recall, but I thought it might be the light or time of day and angle. I should have recognized it, though, as I've been to Hohenzollern, though not for many years. Gorgeous place!
|
Another place to add to my "wanna sees"
|
Another fake one.
|
The architecture is 19th century, too, but unlike Neuschwanstein this place's history dates back to the 11th century and at least its foundations are late medieval.
|
Wow! How did I mess this one during all my peregrinations around southern Germany? I will be sure to see it next time I'm in Germany.
|
Well, this needs to get added to the never-ending list of gorgeous places to visit someday.
Logos, why comment like that? |
Thanks for this. After seeing the picture, I had to go to www.bahn.de to see how long it would take to get there from Basel...

>why comment like that?
Get some info on the castle and the Hohenzollern and you'll notice the real history behind it. It's quite interesting. Reminds me of Saddams palaces in a way. But at least, this one looks "old" :-) |
We visited Burg Hohenzollern on our trip a couple of years ago. It was one of the highlights on a trip filled with highlights!

This is what I wrote about Hohenzollern in my trip report:
Sept 18 (Tuesday) – Rain was waiting for us when we left the Hotel Hospiz in Tübingen for the relatively short drive to Burg Hohenzollern, a breathtakingly beautiful castle perched atop a high hill overlooking the lush Swabian countryside near Hechingen. While little of the original castle from the 11th century remains, the current castle contains St. Michael’s Chapel, which was consecrated in 1461. Over the centuries, the castle had been destroyed by war or allowed to fall into ruin but its last reconstruction was finally completed in 1867. As each successive reconstruction was built atop the old castle, it wasn’t surprising that in 2001 builders stumbled upon several medieval secret passageways and rooms filled to the ceiling with rubble and debris that until then had been completely forgotten. Visitors now have access to these storerooms where china, glassware and silver are displayed. |
