""As I said, I don't understand the logic, which doesn't mean there isn't one."
It's not just you. It's inexplicable." Ummm, to see as much as I possible can while in Switzerland...? How HIGHLY illogical. Wanting to see as much as possible. Just strange. Maybe I should just spend 3 days zurich and the next 7 in Lugano |
Unfortunately, you WON'T be seeing much -- which is what we have, I think, been trying to tell you. You can't safely see the scenery when you are driving. You don't get to see a city when you are trying to find a parking space. You don't get to "see" a place if you only have time to park a car, take a picture of yourself in front of the sign with the city's name, and head off again.
But it's your trip. Good luck! |

But it's your trip. Good luck!" I am doing one day per city, and two days in Interlaken, two in Lucerne, two in Lugano. Zurich hasn't come that highly recommended, Bern and Avenches are tiny, Winterthur is tiny. There are 16 hours wake time in a day... I won't be on the road more than 2 hours in any given day. That leaves at least 16 hours to see a place. Only have time to park a car, take a pic, and head off? Didn't know that takes 16 hours... parking must be brutal in Switzerland. |
You asked for input, and I gave it. The gratitude with which you have accepted my freely given advice is noted.

Yes, and I appreciated that, then again the incessant "this guy has no logic" theme, when I do have a very clearly stated logic, gets a little old.
|
Yes knows what he wants and it (understandably IMO) defies expectations of old pros -point out your subjective view and support it and don't dwell on it. He obviously likes to drive and that can be a thrill - even though to me driving in this mountainous country can be tedious off the autoroutes which are boring.
|
Afj, you are right: compared with the big capitals of this world, all Swiss cities are tiny:
Berne counts 350 thousand inhabitants Winterthur counts 160 thousands inhabitants, both with suburbs. The other places you mention are even smaller. |
Why are you visiting Wengen?
What are you going to do there? By all means, sleep in a Wengen hotel with a south-facing view of the Lauterbrunnen Valley or use the Mannlichen gondola for the Kleine Scheidegg hike, but don't go all the way up by train (no cars past Lauterbrunnen) just to walk through the the village. Thin |
My two cents: If you're going to Thun I don't see a reason to stay overnight in Wengen. You can stay in one of these and visit the other thus cutting out changing hotels. The reason in my opinion to go to this area are the Alps. Spend time doing day trips within that area by staying in one hotel and you won't be moving from one hotel to the other, taking up precious time.
I think getting from one place to another will take you more time than you think. That's been my own experience. Are you taking any trains? |
You can stay in Wengen and take the train from Interlaken Ost to Spiez and Thun.
I would never sleep in Interlaken. Boring. Decidedly NOT posh. Thin |
Thun is a nice city but I'd spend my limited time elsewhere - just my take on Thun - again nice but...

I just heard Wengen is so amazing and basically a must do. I am coming from the west, so I figured do a night in Thun, then Wengen, then on to Lucerne. Just made sense to continue on east. |

Well, I'm open to suggestions. Looks pretty darn nice though. What is really must do around there, other than Wengen or Murren? I figured I would drive up to Gimmelwald, maybe take a boat on the lakes. |

by car not much - can't drive to Wengen nor Murren nor Gimmelwald-only trains and cable ways go to those car-less places. The Jungfraujoch train is the most popular excursion - boat rides on Lake Thun or Lake Brienz make sweet days out- doing the famous easy Ridge Walk from The Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg-but there is nothing to do in say Wengen or Murren or Gimmelwald except to see nice car-less mountain towns. Thun is a nice city but Lucerne and Bern much more interesting for average tourists. Spiez has the castle of your dreams- Oberhofen also on Lake Thun is really neat. You can do scenic drives along northern shore of Lake Thun and of Lake Brienz- to Brienz and then if going to Lucerne up and over the scenic Brunig Pass. Or from Brienz head to the Ballenberg Open-Air Museum and to Meiringen for some meringue and famous Reichenbach Falls and the popular Glacier Gorge you can walk thru, etc. Interlaken has a stately old casino where you can replenish dwindling trip funds. A nice scenic drive also goes to Kandersteg just over the mountains from the Murren area. Grindelwald is just a watering hole -nothing really to see there but do drive there to see a different valley - the gorgeous Grindelwald amphitheatre -much different than the Lauterbrunnen Gorge. |

Thun is a nice beautiful city with neat covered bridges over the river running thru its heart. But Wengen though a neat small village has nothing special to see - just wonderful views that you can get from many other places and a good location and you can't drive to it. Rather for a one day look at gorgeous mountains you can drive to Grindelwald and take in the views without having to take a train. |
