Cigalechanta, I don't think so.
But he does play the part of Merry (or is it Pippin ? )in the 3 Lord of the Rings films.

"Have you eaten something, Pats?"

"Not since 1972."

cigalechanta Jul 7th, 2004 04:59 PM

Mathieu. you are so right after a few gins, I don't know the rings from the potters!!! :)
Seriously, I think I'm alone in that I've never seen any of these films except for commercials and what I read :)

In addition to having many years of Keeping Up Appearances here in the States on PBS, we may have had even more years of Are You Being Served. And just when I thought I was bound to have seen them all, I saw one the other night starring none other than Pats herself. With reddish brown hair! I did not know of her before AbFab. The wax figure they had of her in Madame Tussaud's a couple of years ago was incredible. She looked like she was ready to say "not since 1972". They got the snobbish curl of her upper lip just right!

Thats where I saw him before! Jeffery or is it Geoffrey?

P_M Jul 7th, 2004 05:27 PM

Crepes, wasn't that the episode called "German Week?" She played the wife of the German guy that was mad because Grace Brothers was having German week, and he came to buy something English.

cigalechanta Jul 7th, 2004 05:35 PM

I also loved, "One foot in the Grave" and "To the Manor Born,"( a favorite) and "The Vicor of...) and " As Times go buy?" (title? Julie Dentch)

mvor Jul 7th, 2004 05:42 PM

I thought she was the perfume girl in the "His and Hers" episode?

mvor Jul 7th, 2004 05:48 PM

As Time Goes By is brilliant...I could watch those episodes over and over again...

cigalechanta Jul 7th, 2004 06:10 PM

I agree, we watch "As time goes by" whenever it is repeatd.

For the Americans who loved "Maude" they'd like "To the Manor born."

Neil_Oz Jul 7th, 2004 06:26 PM

That would be "The Vicar of Dibley". Judi Dench is a very fine actress (check her performance as Nell Quickly in Branagh's "Henry V") but for me somewhat wasted in "As Time Goes By".

For my money the best of recent English comedy has been "The Office" and "Teachers". In terms of the older stuff I'm surprised nobody has mentioned "Rumpole of the Bailey", starring my sadly now-deceased compatriot Leo McKern - a classic with the slightly dark "edge" that the best English comedy has.

A laughter track kills almost any comedy for me, and I wish the Brits had never adopted that bad, bad idea.

cigalechanta Jul 7th, 2004 06:30 PM

Oh Neil!!! That is from where, here in my house, it's "She who must be obayed."

cigalechanta Jul 7th, 2004 06:33 PM

Also miss David Suchét(sp?) who was a wonderful Poiret.

Croque_Madame Jul 7th, 2004 07:22 PM

Neil, I love Branagh's "Henry V"! Never heard anyone else mention it.

Did you see him and Emma Thompson paired again in "Much Ado About Nothing"? Richard Briers was also in that, the guy from the comedy, "Good Neighbors".

cigalechanta Jul 7th, 2004 07:31 PM

Croque! it was not mentioned because we are talking Comedy!!

Croque_Madame Jul 7th, 2004 07:32 PM

cigalechanta! I meant never in my life, not on this post.

cigalechanta Jul 7th, 2004 08:10 PM

LOL...Kissing you for always being a nice lady

Croque_Madame Jul 7th, 2004 08:29 PM

Well, thanks, cigalechanta!

If only your perception were my reality... (she snarled viciously, reluctantly sheathing her dagger, then whirling to dropkick a passing chihuahua).

Neil_Oz Jul 7th, 2004 09:37 PM

Slowing down in my old age so the chihuahuas sometimes dodge me, but an unwary poodle sometimes gets unlucky. C_M, yes, did see "Much Ado", another good one (and it qualifies as comedy). Last time I saw Emma Thompson was in "Primary Colors".

SiobhanP Jul 8th, 2004 12:10 AM

Croque - I LOVE Henry the 5th with Branagh. I still never tire of watching it. His speech I think of st. crispins(?) day gives me the shivers....must rent again! Havent seen in a while.
