Movie Suggestions...Paris
DH and I are starting our vacation on Saturday, even though we don't leave until Monday. So, a Paris themed movie night it is...so please, give me your best recommendations for Parisian themed, set, etc. movies.
Thanks! Erika |
One of my favorites is "A Man and a Woman", the ultimate "chickflick", BUT, lots of Grand Prix racing for your DH...
|
Hi Erika. I'm also having a Pairs themed movie weekend. I leave from Phoenix on Wednesday to spend 10 days in Paris. Can't wait! I bet you're as excited as I am!
Tonight I'm watching Camille Claudel, and possibly re-watching Before Sunset. Tomorrow I'm going to try to find French Kiss. Happy watching! |
Amelie. If you haven't seen it, it's a must!
|
I forgot to add that if you like classic movies, you might watch "The Last Time I saw Paris" with Elizabeth Taylor or "Sabrina" with Audrey Hepburn. Also, "Charade".
|
Gigi,
French Kiss, Forget Paris, Celine and Julie go boating, The Fire within, 400 Blows, The man who loved women(French Version not the awful American remake) Chloe in the Afternoon, Breathless, Love without Pity, Nelly and Monsieur Arnaud, Peppermint Soda, When the cat's away, I Can't Sleep, La Femme Nikita, The Lovers on the Bridge, Subway, Pierrot le Fou, Two ot Three things I know about her,Elevator to th Gallows, These are a few, Ican give more if anyone wants more. Girl on the Bridge, |
WOW cigalechanta! I'm emailing you list to myself for future reference. Thanks!
|
And Ronin - for the ladies AND the men!! :D
|
The Dreamers
Some strange sexual stuff. But it is, after all, Paris... |
One of my favorite movies is "Charade" with Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn (look for a young James Coburn as well). This is a mystery/thiller of sorts. Clever and always entertaining -even for those not accustomed to older films. Set in Paris, so it may fit the bill!
Its also out on DVD now. Enjoy your movie night. Cheers, Murphy |
A friend just emailed me to see the Pink Panther. Steve Martin drives a smart car and even shows a street in the Marais.
Zazie in the Metro, Loulou, Police, Paris belongs to us, Chloe in the Afternoon, Full moon in Paris, The girl at the Monceau bakery, Rendezvous in Paris, Bed and Board,Love on the Run, Stolen kisses, these last three are all part of a series of the character Antoine Doinel based on Truffauts childhood that started with 400 Blows. Rififi, Les Parents Terribles, Bob, le Flaneur, Le Samoutai(these two are exciting) Boudu saved from drowning,(a horrible remake here with Bett Midler) |
I liked Bertelucci's "The Dreamers"
which took place during the infamous May student riots. |
We are blessed with a small independent cinema here in Portland where we can see all sorts of good old and new French films.
The most recent ( and ones that I can remember) are: Elevator to the Gallows ( Jeanne Moreau & Maurice Ronet) 5x2 Les Choiristes ( The Chorus) Lila Says Kings & Queens The Beat that my Heart Skipped and a film we saw in London but still remains at the top of my favorites list Ridicule! Mimi has named most of my favorites :) |
For those who don't have access to French films in their area, you can buy or rent at a place I have mentioned here through the last few years:
www.facets.org I keep calling when I want to buy a film when the cost is too high waiting frte reduced price. It took me a year to get Celine and Julie go boating marked down from 80 to 29 and it may be lower down. |
Two that I love are Amelie which give a great view of Paris and Moulin Rouge.
|
Beatchiock mentioning another favorite Ronin, made me remember:
"Frantic", and "Diva", two more good ones. I never saw "Passport to Paris" starring the Olson twins but a friend's teen daughter loved it and couldn't wait to tell me about the Paris scenes and how she is hooked. |
Thanks to everyone...you've more than filled the 8 or so hours I had allotted! I really appreciate all the suggestions...now I just have to make some decisions :)
Erika |
If you start to burn out on cinematic romance, check out:
Baxter (1991) In French with English subtitles I believe... "Beware of the dog that thinks" As a fascist allegory, it's a bit dark but I thought it was very interesting. |
well... only part of it is in Paris, but... "A Little Romance" :)
|
I second the recommendations of Ronin and Before Sunset, though to understand the Before Sunset, you'll need to watch "Before Sunrise" first - which was shot in Vienna.
Also, Bourne Identity has a lot of good Paris scene. |
I can't believe that no one has suggested the old 60's movie "Fanny" with many great French actors including Leslie Caron and Maurice Chevalier. It was always one of my favorite movies, but maybe it isn't so much about Paris as it is about France. But rent it anyway. I have never been to Paris and only once in France, but it seemed very "French" and also romantic, funny, charming...
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054866/plotsummary You laugh, you cry, PERFECT, no? |
Oh, one more, the old Moulin Rouge with Mel Ferrar as Talouse, and Zsa Zsa as a can can girl. Very well done movie. Has always been a favorite.
Of course I LOVE the new one, but the old one has its charm... |
Last Tango in Paris.
Only because it hasn't been mentioned. |
This has just inspired me to sign up for Netflix.
|
You'll enjoy the films much more after you return from Paris, not before you leave.
|
Nikki, I LOVE Netflix!
|
I love Netflix too, but I just put in many of these titles mentioned in this thread and there's an awful lot that Netflix doesn't have. They have all the major English language ones, and a few of the French language, but there were quite a few I couldn't find. Maybe if we all start emailing them with requests they'll stock some more.
|
Ooh, I forgot 1997's Déjà Vu with Victoria Foyt & 1995's Sabrina - 2 of the best films for Paris scenes!
Like Dina, I LOVE The Last Time I Saw Paris! |
The Truth About Charlie - shows a Paris that most visitors never see, such as the flea market at Clignancourt. And if you're staying at Hotel Langlois, the hotel is featured prominently.
Also, the Beat My Heart Skipped and Amelie, of course. |
Le dernier métro, by Truffaut. If it does not have Catherine, it is not a French film.
Also 8 Femmes, with eight of the greatness comédiennes. |
Three more Audrey Hepburns: Love in the Afternoon, How to Steal a Million, and Funny Face. Only a diehard Audrey Hepburn fan could make it (and even then just barely) through the mess that is "Paris when it Sizzles."
I took my screen name from the film Deja Vu that Beatchick mentioned. I love that movie. The Paris scenes are short but sweet. |
I agree with Deja Vu regarding Paris when it Sizzles - boring.
|
Okay, even though only the end is in Paris (but WHAT a great scene on the Pont Alexander III) how about Something's Gotta Give? That, the last episode of Sex & The City, and Forget Paris are on my week-before list.
Also Head in The Clouds with Charlize Theron is a good "Paris" movie. |
Dejais, I ate at Le Grand Colbert & had roast chicken! Something's Gotta Give is a great movie!
|
Audrey Tatou's film "Amelie"
|
How could we have forgotton "Last Tango in Paris?"
There's an old Bridget Bardot film, "Shall we Dance" Serge Gainsbourg plays a young creepin this light mystery. |
Love "Until September" but it is definitely a chick flick! Scenes around Paris, but also, the countryside.
|
I agree, Until September is a fantastic movie. It is an old film, but just came out on DVD. Yeah!.
If you like action/suspense, there is also "Frantic" starring Harrison Ford. It's excellent. Another film, another action/suspense, with Gene Hackman, is "Target". It is another fantastic film. For a campy movie, "If Looks Could Kill" is cute and funny. Also, "The Fatal Image" is another thriller. |
I don't think I saw Le Divorce mentioned. If you don't want to go to the top of the Eiffel Tower this is about as close to doing it as you can get.
|
Wow, happy to see so many film lovers here. I'll be seeing The Pink panther today and though no great reviews, a frind says the Paris scenes are good.
