One-night stands are time wasting - so I'd stay with 2 nights in Bad Wimpfen though many say Rothenburg is best savored after daytime crowds have dissipated. But relocating takes a lot of time packing, unpacking, checking in, etc.

Fussgaenger - thank you so much. I'm printing your recommendations and taking them along with us. Much appreciated.

Another Q: Are you familiar with Ramsau? There's 2 lodging choices i'm trying to decide on: Hindenburglinde and BergHotel Rehlegg. Wondering if you, or any other fodorite, has input to which one is preferable in terms of ambience, location to sites, food, etc...we are looking to do hiking, massages, Lake Konigsee, and Eagle's Next from Ramsau.

Thank you, again.

Smetz1 -

Thanks for the note. it sounds lovely and we are looking forward to doing this. It sounds a lot similar to our wine tasting experiences in Tuscany.

PalenQ - yes, i agree with your 1 night stay philosophy and we are staying in Bad Wimpfen for 2 nights. Thanks for confirming my initial thoughts. I've also decided that if we miss Rothernburg, due to time/distance, it's okay. We'll be seeing many other quaint villages throughout our trip.

I'm having a hard time figuring out how to see the Neuschwanstein Castle. I'm thinking we try to see it in route from Mittenwald to Ramsau? Or, on our way back to Munich from Salzburg - although we were sort of hoping to see Dachau too on this leg of the trip? Does anyone have any input on which would work best/easiest? Honestly, we don't care much if we do a tour, a lot of blogs that i've read have said it's most stunning to view it from a distance on top of some mountain??? i have to go back and find the details as i think that may be the way we want to go....

Thank you,

Shelley

Not on path from Salzburg to Munich at all - Mittenwald is a lot closer to Fuessen but not sure where Ramsau is. If you go to Neuschwanstein take the tour- a surprise at every turn -not your typical boring castle interior stuffed with old furnishings.

PalenQ - thanks a lot for your note. FYI Ramsau is near Berchtesgaden ...we will look into the castle tour, per your recommendation.

Still a big detour off that trek - but Mad Ludwig's Herrenchiemsee is right smakc between Salzburg and Munich - the Bavarian Versailles - Mad Ludwig built on island in middle of lake - really neat - not sure a long detour to Neuschwanstein is worth it unless staying in Fussen or Schwangau a day or two - lovely walks and the castle.

Thanks PalenQ - Mad's castle sounds good. We'll look into seeing if we can add that to our itinerary.

I was suggesting to see Herrenchiemsee instead of Neuschwanstein which is a huge detour from your other places.

I've seen 2 different rental companies mentioned most often, can't recall the names at the moment,>

There are car rental companies you deal directly with and in Europe we have some agents that deal with European companies -often going thru a U.S. agent is cheaper than renting once there directly from a car company. AutoEurope is one company here that many folks recommend. Hertz is certainly all over Europe as is AVIS.

PalenQ, Thank you. A little wrinkle in our plans, I broke my ankle yesterday, so we are now trying to decide if we keep plans or push out the dates which would have to be Aug, due to our schedule. There's pro's and con's to each so we've got to decide which way to go :(

PalenQ May 9th, 2018 12:51 PM

Be sure to buy trip cancellation insurance! My condolences - I've broken a few bones recently too- sucks.

swanner May 9th, 2018 04:06 PM

Oh no, I’m so sorry to hear that. Hope we both mend quickly

Hi PalenQ - I'm wondering if you or any of the others may have some advise for me. I'm tying to figure out what route is most logical: Frankfurt /Hornbach/Koburn-Gondorf/Oberwesel OR Frankfurt/Koburn-Gondorf/Hornbach/Oberwesel. These are the towns in which we have lodging.

We will be stopping at sites and towns along the way including (but not limited to) Bernkastle-Kues and Trier and Cochum, Berg Eltz, wineries, etc...Currently our order is Frankfurt /Hornbach/Koburn-Gondorf/Oberwesel but I'm not sure if that is the most sensible route. If not, I may contact the hotels to see if I can modify our nights at each. We have reasons for wanting to stay at each hotel so we don't want to eliminate any, I just want to make sure I have the order in the most sensible route sequence.

I've tried looking online at maps but I'm not getting a full view thus the reason for my question.

Any input you - or others - have is most appreciated. We depart early Sat morning so need to make any changes no later than tomorrow morning.

Thank you,

Shelley

I'm not familiar with where those other towns are - hopefully someone else will.
