To Judyrem, My husband and I will arriving SML on May 5th, staying at the Continental Hotel. Our departure date is May 9th. We will be heading for Menton, Fr, where we will "supposedly" stay for 5 days - my husband is waffling. He's about ready to cancel France, and try to extend our stay in Italy. I don't agree, and I'm the one doing the travel plans. I told him to relax, and enjoy the entire vacation. I'm think we will just miss each other in Santa Margherita.

buon viaggio!

dgruzew Mar 13th, 2003 07:11 PM

We are headed to paris and Nice, Florence and Rome May-June

We have no intention of canceling any part, I figure if we have any serious problem we can change our schedule while we are there - I really don't forsee any problems. A friend of mine has a brother that lives in france(an american) and he said that he has not seen any anti-american behaviour diected at him.

What an interesting thread! My wife and I are leaving for Italy on May 15th. We're just getting springlike here in the mountains of western North Carolina and are really looking forward to our first trip to Italy.

We're arriving Milan, staying one night then training to Cinque Terre for 3 nights, then Florence for 2 nights, then Tuscany (by car only here), then dropping the car at Rome Airport and spending the last 3 days in Rome.

jabez Mar 14th, 2003 04:11 AM

We leave May 27. Four nights Umbria, four nights Tuscany, three nights Lake Como, one night Florence and then three nights in France.

helene Mar 14th, 2003 06:36 AM

Leaving on May 26th for 2 weeks!! For my honeymoon!! Arriving in Rome, spending 5 nights there, moving on to Florence for 4 nights, 3 nights in Venice and then back to Rome. I am so excited!!!

Giovanna Mar 14th, 2003 07:14 AM

I'm so glad to see that so many of you are traveling and continuing with your plans regardless of our troubled times.

We too are off in mid May, leaving San Francisco for Prague. We'll continue to Vienna and then Budapest. It looks as if France and Italy will be crowded with Fodorites. To you first timers in either country, you are in for a real treat! To all of you, be safe and continue to enjoy your lives.

NancyB Mar 14th, 2003 07:58 AM

Another Floridian heading to Europe in May!

We're going to Croatia and Slovenia, and so looking forward to the fabulous views! I have the old walls of Dubrovnik overlooking the Adriatic on my computer to help me get through the next 2 months!

kateg Mar 14th, 2003 10:02 AM

We are traveling to Ireland and London on May 23 to pick up a CIE Tour which will take use from Dublin through southern Ireland, across the Irish Sea through Wales to London. As the tour only has one full day in London, we have added 3 more days in London. I haven't been to Ireland and London since 1983 and my husband has never been. We are looking forward to this trip and will not let world events stop us! I am glad to see that many others feel the same way. You all have great trips.

GARYNFLA Mar 14th, 2003 11:57 AM

wow there are lotsa folks traveling in May.. these boards will be sparse..
Anyone know how to make time go by faster so I can leave sooner..LOL
By the way I ordered High-lights of Italy from RickSteves.com and it is awesome.. I'm from PA, and heading to St Ives in Cornwall the middle of May for a week long garden tour that includes the Eden Project and Lost Gardens of Heligan, followed by 3 days hiking the Cornish coast, then 4 full days in London. This will be my 2nd visit to St Ives, so I know what to expect and can hardly wait.

cruelbee Mar 14th, 2003 01:46 PM

In the beginning of May I will fly off to Roma and stay in Amalfi area for two weeks. I rented a place overlooking the bay, I hope it is as good as it looks in the pictures!

Dog_Mother Mar 14th, 2003 05:19 PM

My husband and I will drive from Western New York to Toronto to fly to Venice on May 24. We will spend 3 nights in Venice. Then take the train to Chiusi to pick up a car and drive to Siena for 3 nights. We'll explore northern Tuscany during those 3 days, then drive to Chiusi and will stay there for four days--and will explore Orvieto, Montepulciano, Cortona, Gubbio, Assisi, etc. Then we'll turn the car in, and take the train to Florence for 5 nights, Verona for 2 nights, and one final night in Venice before returning to Toronto on June 12.

This will be our third trip to Italy in as many years. I just wish we had more time to return to the Cinque Terre--but Italy just can't be done quickly.

We absolutely love Italy.

Deloris Mar 14th, 2003 05:50 PM

Was in Florence last May 1. A WARNING TO FELLOW EUROPEAN TRAVELERS: Have a big plan B if you find yourself in a major Italian, if not any European city May 1. We found out by surprise it is the WORST day for a non communist to be in Europe!!!! Demonstrations and lines everywhere! It is also a major european holiday. We had a great time wandering the BACK streets of Florence to avoid the mobs and watched the rest on CNN in our hotel. It is not a good day to look like an American, and this year could be worse. Everyone we saw did treat us with respect and we did not feel threatened, but then we avoid political demonstrations, here and abroad, with
great care! Will be in various parts of Italy this year in July....just works out that way!
Gotta get a good meal!
zwho Mar 14th, 2003 06:10 PM

Hi from Kansas City. My husband, myself and our 2 adult children will be leaving for Krakow and Prague on May 19. I am so happy to see how many people are planning European vacations. Here in the midwest, most people either think I'm nuts or some big risk taker. We were in Spain in late October and the worst thing I encountered when someone noticed my accent was they wanted to know what the hells the matter with Bush!! My answer was, let me know when you find out. Really, people on an individual basis are usually very nice and if not, I can stand a little rudeness, it won't hurt me. I just hope that we all don't feel alot less confident in a months time because of world events beyond our control.

Barb_in_Ga Mar 14th, 2003 06:18 PM

We are--first, 2 days in Belgium, then five days in Paris, followed by 3 days in London. This is our first trip to Belgium, so I'm looking forward to something new. London and Paris will be mostly repeats of favorite sights, with a few new activities thrown in.

Obviously, a serious change in the war situation could change things, but we are forging ahead with plans as long as it is possible.

Petoonya Mar 14th, 2003 06:25 PM

Us too! Will be there via cruise ship May 9-24, Livorno, Civitavecchia, Naples and Venice (and Barcelona, Villefranche, Athens, Santorini, Dubrovnik). The highlight however will be the days in Italy tho- can't wait!

I hadn't previously posted to this thread, thinking it was just asking about who would be in Italy in May. But I see that some other Central Europe travelers have weighed in.

We leave for Vienna May 12, then Prague May 15-18, Poland and/or Graz for three nights, and finish with a destination (as yet undetermined - - maybe Stirling?) in the British Isles, May 21 and 22.

Best wishes,

Rex
[email protected]
Nancy B. may 28 we fly to london then on to trieste & will make our way down the croaian coast 1st visit.have 4 weeks any suggestions ?

Carin Mar 21st, 2003 05:07 PM

Gary, you'll chuckle at why my trip to Italy is so long... it was originally 2 weeks (and that was pushing it at my office)

...but a few weeks ago I (and my whole department) got laid off... after crunching the numbers, I figured out not only could I still (sorta)afford the trip to Italy, and it turned out the extra days didn't add too much $$$. Hence - it's now a great trip!!!

It's ironic... you can really afford these trips by working, but sadly that means there not enough time to go on them.

Alice_the_Magyar Mar 21st, 2003 05:29 PM

Good for you !
Venice is truly enchanting in May
so much history.. Casanova, Marco Polo and THE BELLINI at Harry's Cipriani (skip the meal but have the Bellini). Be sure to take home a gorgeous venetian MASK for souvenir. Spend a lot of time in San Marco piazza, catch a great picture of you with the doves all around you---kodak moment. Have a drink at the FIORI CAFE. Walk and walk the mysterious alleys of Venice. YOu won't forget it.
ROME, first stop , red grape fruit gelato at Crispino, Crispina (something like that) around the corner of the Trevi fountain. Feel the amazing history of the Coliseum and it's magnificent existence. Hang out with those cool looking Italians at the Spanish Steps late in the afternoon. CHECK OUT THOSE SHOES.....unbelievable, everyone has great shoes on...

ROME (Hotel de la ville Intercontinental overlooking the spanish steps, just perfect !)

VENICE (Danieli Hotel) Grand Canal view for sure and all the splendor of Venice.

In the meantime, my husband and I will be exploring Tuscany with friends in May. Flying to Rome from NYC, staying in Rome for 2 nights to eat well and visit the Coliseum again and the piazzas, this will help us get over our jet lag.....then we drive to Tuscany (Chianti as home base) to see Siena, Florence, San Gimignano, Pisa, Cortona, Assisi. Then back to Rome overnight and back home.

HAVE A SAFE and wonderful experience.
Italy is absolutely gorgeous.

For your next trip to Italy,
definitely Lake Como (Bellagio) and Capri...exquisitely beautiful. Fairy tale places.
