My husband is back home. They reopened Dutch airspace and he was ready for boarding, but half the people attending the meeting can't make it due to the chaos. He was able to cancel is check in and his company will re-book him for next week.
The folks at Schiphol - which was very busy with stranded flyers, said they expected the airspace to be closed this evening, and in any case with planes in the wrong place flights would be very tricky even to non affected destinations. |

Doesn't look like it at the moment - see the Met Office link above for their forecasts. But disruptions to flight plans can leave planes in all the wrong places for the schedule, so flights to and from Italy on airlines that use northern European airspace could be disrupted. |
I looked at that link but goodness knows what will happen if it keeps erupting over the next few days. This flight goes from atlanta to philly to rome and back, so I don't think it should be interrupted by anything other than the actual ash.

We're trying to get five of our employees (and some of their family members) to Hamburg, Germany and none of them got out of the US today. This is going to cause major havoc with flights, especially if the volcano doesn't settle down soon, but it should be good for the European train industry!

Even Frankfurt has been closed this morning. Stuttgart and Munich airports are still open, but this may change in the afternoon. The ash cloud is proceeding further southeast. Hard to tell from sight if that overcast sky above me (in Karlsruhe) is already part of it but might well be, as it was expected to reach Mannheim around 8 a.m. and I am half an hour fuirther south and it is half an hour later.

Flights from Australia are also cancelled as they wouldn't be able to land on arrival at Heathrow. This has also affected flights that are already at stopover destinations in Singapore, Hong Kong etc.

Received an email from AA that our flight to Frankfurt today has been cancelled.
So now we wait for the skies to clear....and a seat to open up on the already-full planes. Could be days away. |
With a trip to London scheduled next week, I am tempted to feel sorry for myself.
But then I think of all the people straded away from their homes on both sides of the Atlantic. Keith |
Rescheduled for 3 days out, different routing but got seats and a confirmation.

We depart from the US next Friday...I'm hoping all will be good for us...but the news in the US says it may last another 7 days...we fly into Manchester and are there for 15 days...any effects on the ground with air quality?

swisshiker, glad you were able to reschedule, albeit three days out. Are you flexible with your time? Oh, to be retired! I am mentally working on a contingency plan, feeling worse for anyone stranded away from home, as Keith said.

None - it's all miles up in the atmosphere. I suppose it will have to come down eventually, but right now, nothing. |
A light dust on cars in Glasgow....can feel a bit of something, but tis a lovely sunny day

I've gotten a similar report from Ampleforth. The scientist that was interviewed this morning, said they had no clue how the ash settling to the ground would affect people, animals, vehicles, etc.
I'm wondering as I have some problems with asthma. Thanks for your reports...will check frequently for updates. |
