So let me get this straight.
Unless you hit at least two london pass places that charge admission, it's not worth buying the london pass.

I'm leaving out of heathrow and staying in kensington (at the K west hotel... any comments people?).
Can't I just take the tube instead of backtracking and paying much more for the heathrow express?
I have the extra time (I hear it is 50 minutes to get to the airport via tube.)

We just returned last week from a week-long trip to London. We found that the 7-day travelpass was a great way to cut out some of the hassle. And we used them to death, so we did get our money's worth.

If you buy the travelpasses before you arrive in London, no photo is required. But you do have to pick them up (at Heathrow, several major tube stations.)

Lisa

For those of you who are confused about which zone pass to buy for London, go to the Tube website and take a look at the zone map:
http://www.thetube.com/content/tubemap/images/zm_map.jpg

This will show you that most of London's sites are in Zones 1 and 2. If you stay with friends, like I do, you should check for their tube station to see what zone it is in. My friends live in zone 4, so I usually purchase an all zones pass.

I'm trying to sort out the pass situation also So I wouldn't need a photo if I bought the daily in London for zone 1 and2. Only photo needed if i bought the weekly in London Can buy weekly here without photo. Are there booths to buy these passes at the stations or machines? I may need a lesson before i go I'm Staying for 8 days and doing a few day trips Have to plan it so if I do buy the weekly have to tack on my day out of London trips at the beginning or end of my trip right??

Cathy:

You basically have it....the daily passes in London during the week are only good after 9:30 AM...there is a more expensive all day pass good before 9:30 AM. No photos needed. These can be bought in machines as well as from the booking office.

7 day passes in London indeed need a photo and are bought in the booking office at each and every underground station. You need a photo. No 9:30 restriction on these. Good 24 hrs a day.

Passes bought in US do not need a photo whether bought for 3 days, 4 days, or 7 days. For the most part, you get a voucher which has to be exchanged at certain Underground stations for the actual pass.

Do you need to bring a photo with you for the no restriction pass whether weekly or daily? I just had passport pics taken Do I Need an extra passport size photo or do they take it there? Thanks Everyone seems to be saying it is probably more economical to buy in London maybe not for the price but just to make sure you will use it for the days you are buying because you may be doing other thingslike walking to places or taking tour buses etc. Cathy

Cathy
You need a passport sized picture if you are purchasing the 7 day travelcard in London, but not for the 1 day travelcard. If you have just had passport photos taken and have a spare then bring it with you. I think all the underground stations have photo booths for this purpose but they will probably be more expensive than at home.

Basically, when you buy the 7 day travelcard from the ticket office just hand over your picture and they will make up the photo pass. You will get the pass and travelcard in a little wallet and you can use the pass on future trips (I've had mine about 10 years so far).

From the prices I've seen it appears slightly cheaper to purchase travelcards once you get here.

Karen
