We saw My Fair Lady this past Jan with our 14 yr old son & we all loved it..the dancing, stage sets, and costumes were especially good. Actually, the whole thing was especially good.

Cats is still running through May. Mama Mia is a lot of fun - worth every "full price" penny! We have friends coming to visit in a few weeks and will go see it again. It is great.

The girls (not I, though) already have seen Mamma Mia, My Fair Lady, Les Miz, and Phantom. Do you know anything about newer shows? is The Graduate still playing? Have you heard anything about Chitty-Chitty Bang Bang?

Ellen Feb 21st, 2002 03:13 AM

Don't forget to consider some Shakespeare at the new Globe Theater. An experience like that will make high-school Shakespeare studies so much more enjoyable!

The Graduate is finished, I think (or very soon will be.) Chitty Chitty Bang Bang does start soon and tickets are on sale for it on Ticketmaster.

Hi Sharon-
I just got back from London yesterday, and we saw 2 shows. One we got from the 1/2 price ticket booth (South Pacific), and one the concierge got for us from an agency (Lion King). I would highly recommend the Lion King - it was one of the best shows I have ever seen (for reference, I have seen Phantom, Les Mis, Beauty and the Beast, Miss Saigon, Grease, Rent, Starlight Express, and Jesus Christ Superstar). I would suggest buying them before you go to get the best price - I wish we did.

I have also heard wonderful things about Mamma Mia. My Fair Lady was available at the 1/2 price ticket booth on Monday, but was offered at full price.
When are you going to London? I remember seeing signs saying that Chitty-chitty bang-bang would be opening soon, but I am not sure when. Also, The Full Monty is opening soon (I think at the end of the month). I know people who saw it in NYC, and they thought that it was wonderful - I don't know if a 16 year old would like it though.
Good luck, and have a great time!

Last summer we took our two teenagers to see The Lion King. It was spectacular. You can book tickets online (I think there is even a seating chart of the theater) at www.uktickets.co.uk.

Has anyone seen Private Lives, Humble Boy, or Blood Brothers? By the way, the London Times does list my Fair Lady playing at Drury Lane.

janis Feb 22nd, 2002 05:44 PM

Sharon - I have seen all 3 and all were very good - in different ways. You should be able to get tickes for all three at the 1/2 price booth in Leicester square.

I'm not sure if Private Lives has yet had its cast change - but Alan Rickman is fabulous.

Blood Brothers is getting old - I have seen it three time over the last 10 years - but it never seems to date. they have frequest cast changes so that may keep it fresh.

Another play to consider is Noises Off - REALLY hysterically funny.

Sharon Feb 23rd, 2002 05:07 AM

Does anyone know whenAlan Lickman will leave Private Lives? We will be in London April 5. The show is scheduled to open with him in New York April 19.
Also, is it worth taking a chance on Chitty Chitty Bang Bang?

Has anyone seen "stones in his pockets"?
Bonnie Mar 1st, 2002 03:44 AM

Sharon: just a note to comment on Blood Brothers which I saw last week in London. I liked it a lot, but during the show I was asking myself if I would take my 15 year old niece to see this (plan on bringing her next time) and I decided I don't think I would, because of the language. The f word is used quite a bit. Of course, there were many children younger than 15 in the audience. It's a personal call.

Keith Legg Mar 1st, 2002 04:02 AM

My Fair Lady is still going - definately! To end the confusion, there was a cast change earlier than planned - Martine McCutcheon (a UK soap star who was playing Eliza) left early because of a recurring throat problem, and shortly after that there was a planned change when the likes of Jonathan Price left.

To reply to Jennifer G, I've seen "Stones in his Pockets." I have to say that I hated the first act and almost left the theatre, but returned and saw one of the funniest second acts I've ever seen. It's basically a two man show, with each actor playing several parts, so it does get a bit confusing at times. It's also a bit like "Art" in that there are frequent cast changes - at the time I saw it Bronson Pinchot (from "Perfect Strangers" - remember that?) was in it, although I saw the matinee cast.

Thanks for al of the advice. I spoke with the rep at tickets.co.uk who had Lion King and Mamma Mia available (the latter only with a dinner attached at L'escagot. I called the theater directly and got a recording to call ticketmaster. The rep suggested The Play What I Wrote, over Stones in My Pocket, both two actor shows. She polled her co-workers who said the humor in the latter is easier to understand.
We also are looking for private guides. Any leads?
