London Q: New St Pancras-Thameslink Interchange
 

Is the new Thameslink (First One or whatever) station open in St Pancras/King's Cross or do you still have to get off at the old Kings Cross Thameslink station on Pentonville Rd (I think) a few blocks from Kings Cross?

If the new station is open are they walkways to Kings Cross and St Pancras?

Will the old Thameslink station remain open?

I believe it St Pancras Thameslink opens the first week of so of Dec.

The old one is closing I think...it is currently still at Pentonville Road

The new Thameslink station is part of the below-stairs complex at St Pancras. As far as I've been able to see, getting to both the international station and the domestic platforms at the northern end of St Pancras will be effortless and pleasant.

BUT, getting to Kings Cross involves a short walk, in the open, across what used to be - before all this building started - a busy road. Road rerouting probably has got rid of a lot of the traffic, and the walk's a lot shorter and more agreeable than the above-ground walk from the old Thameslink station is. But there's no covered walkway or underground passage to KX that I've found.

The Thameslink trains are now run by First Capital Connect (www.firstcapitalconnect.co.uk).
According to their timetables, the old Thameslink station at Kings Cross is replaced by the new station at St Pancras International when the new timetable starts on 9 December.

I may be doing the planners of the station a disservice.

The First Capital Connect (Thameslink was a great deal easier) debouches at St Pancras in the undercroft (ground level, below the above-ground long-distasnce rail platforms) next to what will be a Tube entrance from 2010. This, presumably, means that from then there will be a covered below-ground route to KX.

But till then, it looks like anyone wanting to get to York from Gatwick, say, is going to get drenched.

The old Thameslink station was a complete nightmare. Just one flight of steps up from the platform, crowds of people, masses of luggage. Enough to put me off using it. The new connection to KingsX/St Panc must be better
