I see the Watercress Line are doing a special 1940s Christmas run: anyone for whalemeat sandwiches, gravy browning stocking seams, smuts in the eye, tearful farewells and rock cakes?

Seems like Stratford International will also be a main long-distance station - aren't trains from there to the North planned as well as from St Pancras?

No, they cancelled the plans a few years ago so Northern folk will stay with their cheapo flights to Paris / Brussels / Amsterdam - and Stratford station isn't even going to be ready for the Olympics in 2012.

Oh and Ashford station is going to be virtually obsolete as most Eurostar trains won't be stopping there once Ebbsfleet (which has NO other public transport) opens
