Thank you all for your replies. Our reservations are confirmed for mid September!

micheline....be sure to visit The Maeght Museum either before or after lunch..very unusual and most pleasant, indoors and outdoors...it's a very long walk or short drive....and don't miss walking around and through the Colombe's hotel, the pool area, etc. You'll spot a Calder "guarding" the pool...and two big "green apples" alongside the pool.

Enjoy it all! (another tip, in nearby Vence, the Matisse Chapel is a beautiful minimalist-designed white building with great views of the Riviera in the distance)

What number would you call to get reservations? Would they be necessary in early to middle October?

Thanks, tower. I know it is an expensive place, but I wondered how one could do a lower cost lunch. Is 25 euro per person about as low as you could go? I wouldn't want to be embarrassed. How about dress code?

Kristinelaine Sep 22nd, 2009 11:28 AM

Anyone have an opinion on this question?

cigalechanta Sep 22nd, 2009 04:14 PM

No dress code, but I have been there late summer early autumn and some were in casual linens, jeans, caftens, it seemed anything goes. But for dinner I noticed there were guests always dressed up. I can't tell you the price because, we always stayed there as a gift to eachother, be it birthday Christmas or Anniversary. Money went to our trips to have days to order and stay where we wanted.

The Thumb, a sculpture of his own thumb, by the late charming Cesar.

kristinelaine:

a 25€ p/p maximum may be hard to come by...I don't know for sure...but just ask when you call..maybe there's a special of some kind. Don't hesitate, I'm sure that question is asked frequently. Hope you can do it.

Dress code, or lack thereof is per Cigalechanta's comments. We also noticed it was quite casual...we certainly were.

This restaurant was highly recommended to us before our spring vacation to the south of France. However, due to time restraints we missed the opportunity to dine there, so now we will just have to return!

I'm back from Nice. The highlight of our trip was supposed to be our lunch at the Colombe D'or. It was a miserable wet and cloudy day so since we could not eat in the garden we decided not to have lunch there. Since we did have a reservation they were kind enough to let us wander through the garden to have a look at the pool and sculptures. I looked at the menu and there did not seem to be anything under 25 euros and the first 3 wines on the list were 20, 30 and 40 euros. We had lunch on the verandah of the famous boules place. It would be ok for a drink and a snack but the food really was not very good. Saint Paul de Vence is so beautiful even in the rain and it was the only day of our one week stay in Nice that was not sunny and warm.

We are back from the area also. I looked at their menu one noon time and there was one or two main dishes for about 20 euro. We had not made reservations ahead and would have tried to make them that day for a few days later, but decided we didn't want to make another trip up there from Juan Les Pins where we were staying, as we had other places we still wanted to see. Actually when you see what all the restaurants in the area are charging, this place wasn't really that expensive.

I know this is a very old post but I was doing research for my trip to Nice next June and this popped up. I received so many helpful comments. My daughter and some friends had lunch at la Colombe d’Or last year and loved it. The food, the garden, the art and the atmosphere. Going to try again with six girlfriends. I will be 11 years’ older (78). Know I can handle the steps at St.Paul de Vence (still play tennis) but it’s the awful bus ride I’m worried about.
