Do you think we should postpone our trip until all this blows over?

robjame Mar 22nd, 2007 11:37 AM

Aren't news headlines and statistics wonderful things:

The murder rate in Britain is 15 per million people.

The U.S. murder rate is 55 per million, according to the FBI.

Lawchick I suggest you extend your holiday... just to be safe.

blightyboy Mar 22nd, 2007 11:42 AM

Dont be silly, how much knife crime is there in the US, anyway are you planning to mix with Kids?
Come and enjoy the UK, 67 million of us do and are very safe.

waring Mar 22nd, 2007 11:56 AM

It's not vests they need, but trousers.

Apparently the little sods are stabbing each other in the thighs.

flanneruk Mar 22nd, 2007 01:46 PM

Lawchick:

Stop it. Now. Robjame got taken in, but you can't fool the rest of us. What's the bruxellois for "trolling"?

Or are you just the first of a flock of Dubliners avoiding Heathrow and Stansted because of all the knifecrime?

Carrybean Mar 22nd, 2007 03:10 PM

I'm sure the UK government will appoint some government commission in charge of knife crime which will spend tons to study the situation, then they will add some outrageous tax on cutlery including butter knives. :) Taxes cure everything, you know. ;)

walkinaround Mar 22nd, 2007 03:29 PM

in fact, they did want to outlaw 'long pointy' kitchen knives here. a study was commissioned that determined these knives are not really necessary in the kitchen anyway.

good grief...only in britain.

Carolina Mar 22nd, 2007 08:56 PM

At least we've not got the level orf gun crime of the US - yet anyway!

Carolena

alanRow Mar 22nd, 2007 11:54 PM

Do we even have the level of knife crime?

Dukey Mar 23rd, 2007 03:29 AM

Why don't you use one of those American inventions like Google and find out?

Kate Mar 23rd, 2007 03:52 AM

What, on that British invention the World Wide Web ;-)

Enough posturing now methinks. It's not a competition.

alanRow Mar 23rd, 2007 04:10 AM

Why should I, I'm not the one panicking

PatrickLondon Mar 23rd, 2007 04:11 AM

Oh, Kate. Of course it's a competition. Or at least, I'm sure that's what Dad would say, since he's bigger than your Dad.

audere_est_facere Mar 23rd, 2007 04:34 AM

I'm professionally involved in the Hammersmith knife murder - and I have never been so depressed professionally as I have been over arresting a 13 year old boy for murder. Needless to say the "beef" was about sod-all.

BTW - it's like gun crime in the UK - it's a gang related thing - civilians are safe.

Josser Mar 23rd, 2007 05:21 AM

What, on that British invention the World Wide Web

...and using that other British invention, the computer ;-)

If you think that British kids are violent, then you should see our lambs and kittens.

audere_est_facere Mar 23rd, 2007 05:40 AM

Or our old ladies.

MissPrism Mar 23rd, 2007 05:55 AM

Are you alluding to me?

Remember the Hell's grannies?

PatrickLondon Mar 23rd, 2007 07:56 AM

Tsk. Once a St Trinian's girl....

PalenQ Mar 23rd, 2007 08:02 AM

I thought Al Gore invented the Internet!

But the UK crime problem with youths, though not nearly on a scale of big US cities - not nearly - should raise warning bells in the UK

recent reputable surveys i've seen rank the UK near the bottom of how young people are treated in society - this and the unrelenting poverty they are born in admist a booming economy is bound to cause disastifaction and anger.

And less immigrant are blamed i think most of the crime surge in UK housing estates is from old-fashioned Anglo-Saxo/Celts.

So it's easy to blow it off by comparing it to the much worse US - a national embarrassment to me - instead of looking at the indigenous causes.
