Just got back from Paris!!!!!!

We loved Paris, very romantic and gorgeous. We did not meet a single rude Parisian. People started to talk to us and tried to help us with directions eventhough we didn't ask for help. One very elegant French lady with a cute poodle started talking to us in English. In summary, we love the French people, they were very goodlooking, well-dressed and elegant. All the women were very skinny. Love Paris!!!! Love the cafes in St Germain, bookstalls along the seine, the Vedette boat cruise at night, the eiffel tower was lit up at night, walking around Paris, just love it! Paris was so romantic! Lots of great (relatively cheap) restaurants on Rue Hutchette, most had the 3 course fix price menu for $15! Love St Germaine!

Love eating lunch at Jules Verne, the food, the service, the ambiance, everything! We did not have to make dinner reservations in Paris or any where else since we ate at 7:00-7:30 PM most nights. Love Pont Neuf, Effiel tower, Notre Dam (climbed to the top) and Montmarte(spelling?). Please beware of thieves near the Moulin Rouge, especially the ones on motorbike. There were two men on the motorbike, then suddenly my husband notice that they stopped near him, he thought they were stopping to go in to one of the shops. I was in the shop near by when I heard my husband screamed as he was trying to hold onto his backpack. If it wasn't for the French local, all our cameras and camcorder would've been stolen by this thief.
We were so shaken by the experience that we took the first bus back to our hotel without seeing the Moulin Rouge. We knew this was a Redline district but none of the guide books said anything about it being dangerous during the day. Please wear your backpack with both should straps on, my husband didn't. Also watch your back when walking around this area and beware of anyone walking too close to you. That was the only bad experience that we had in Paris, but it was the Red light area...We still love Paris but will avoid the area near Moulin Rouge next time. We feel extremely safe every where else.
I've been checking out this site on and off for a couple of months now as I get ready to spend roughly 6 weeks in France. The postings have provided a lot of useful information, if nothing more than confirming that I'm on the right track in terms of what to pack, what to watch out for, etc. I am looking forward to my trip so that I can stop coming to this site...the rude replies are embarrassing and are not useful in the least. I can't help but wonder whether these people have lives...or is this site their only outlet??

JWD-look for the thread by Lisa where she tells about London and Paris in her part one of this series. Then you can get an idea of why people that have been keeping up with the threads are not thrilled to see her posting more crap.

JWD Jul 2nd, 2002 11:00 AM

I pulled up her message because I wanted to see what she had to say about Paris...my sense is don't pull up the message, and certainly don't respond to it if you think it's a bunch of crap!

kudos JWD

Good report Lisa! Paris is so much fun. Glad you had a great time.

Too all those people who have put stupid remarks here, get a life!

lze Jul 2nd, 2002 10:23 PM

Hi Lisa, There is one in every crowd they say. You can tell the good replies, just disregard the others. Not worth your time to read them even. We were just in Paris and returned a couple weeks ago. Just wonderful. we also had an experience with a pickpocket on the metro. Some girls got on and got off again almost as fast, the train had not moved. We think in hindsight they were a diversion. My husband had 80 Euro taken and they could only get a zipper open maybe enough to get two fingers in. He was wearing a wallet type thing and it was on his belt loop. It can happen anytime I guess. It is a crime of opportunity and they are pretty professional. We did not let that spoil our trip. Had the most wonderful trip. Enjoyed reading your post.

Lisa, are you from holland?

Lisa Jul 3rd, 2002 06:57 PM

Thank you Janet, Victor, Ize..and other nice people on this board. The majority of the people here are fantastic! Some are just plain rude, I can't be bothered to name names... You know who you are, perhaps you should buy a plane ticket and really go to Paris instead of just sitting around on this board posting ugly comments that doesn't help anyone. Atleast I went to London, didn't like it so I wrote what I had experienced. You didn't like the negative comments, bad luck!

I bet the nasty people on this board have never been to Paris or London or Venice or Florence or Rome. So all they can do is sit around and post stupid comments about people's real travel experience. Everyone has his/her own experience, you cannot say that someone is right or wrong because it is THEIR experience and not yours! So SHUT THE HELL UP OK?
Lisa, you go girl!

I'm just checking in because we're planning a road trip to Normandy in October and I wanted to check around.

BUT we also just returned from a May trip through the Jura, Franche-Compte and Burgundy, ending up with 3 days in Paris. The people were lovely everywhere and we saw no problems anywhere -- and many people warned us about the evils of France these days.

It was perhaps our best trip to France to date.

As far as Americans not travelling -- well, while we were in Paris there were times when we heard more English while walking down a street than we did French. On the other hand, in the Franche-Compte we were the only english-speaking people we encountered (!) although there were (not surprisingly) more of us in Burgundy. And LOTS more in Paris.

And if anyone has suggestions about routes in Normandy, I'm ready to listen!

Come on Lisa! Stop trying to justify your actions (assuming you are not a troll). The majority of us HAVE BEEN to London, Paris,Florence, Venice, etc. The only difference between you and us is that you hang out in the red light districts of all the cities you mention. Then you complain about how bad it is. So what did you expect? You're fortunate some of us take you seriously.
