Je suis voyager à Bruxelles... quand je dois faire?

Salut! Je suis voyager à Bruxelles en la Belgique. Quand je dois faire? Je veux faire quelque chose amusant qui ne coûte pas beaucoup de l’argent. Respondez, s’il vous plait. Merçi!

hypatia May 1st, 2008 05:26 PM

Parlez vous Anglais?

janisj May 1st, 2008 05:33 PM

I can figure out what you are asking (fun, inexpensive things to do in Brussels) but cannot answer since I don't speak/write French. I'm pretty sure that is what you are asking just from the words that are similar in English and French.

There are several French Fodorites plus lots of others who are fluent so hopefully some of them will see your questions . . . .

llamalady May 1st, 2008 06:28 PM

.....cute accent on 'merci'!

StCirq May 1st, 2008 06:49 PM

Well, obviously French isn't your native language, so what is? Or is this some kind of joke?

azzure May 1st, 2008 06:49 PM

I've been studying French for awhile (still a beginner) and the phrase "Quand je dois faire?" doesn't make sense to me. I translate it as "When must I do?" but that can't be right.

StCirq May 1st, 2008 06:53 PM

The whole message is messed-up French. He/she is obviously not a French speaker native.

Je suis voyager was the first clue. Respondez was another huge one.Lots in between.

grandmere May 1st, 2008 07:09 PM

I'm glad for the reality check on this "French"; sure looked strange to me!

BTilke May 1st, 2008 11:33 PM

Brussels has lots of language clubs where people can get together to practice their French...maybe the OP could try one of those ;-)

At any rate, if this is a serious question, one of the easiest things for visitors to do is pick up the latest copy of The Bulletin newsmagazine and check out the "What's On" section. There are plenty of exhibitions in town that are free or almost. Free concerts as well.

flanneruk May 1st, 2008 11:45 PM

When I think of the amount of physical pain the good Fathers inflicted to make us use "en" right, I can see what a good idea physical punishment in education really was.

Seriously: reading "en la Belgique" hurts more than Father O'Sadist's ferula ever did.

jamikins May 2nd, 2008 01:28 AM

Maybe French is their 2nd language and they dont speak English?? Maybe their 2nd language isnt that strong but they can fumble through? Just a thought

hetismij May 2nd, 2008 03:09 AM

But if they don't speak English how do they know Fodors is a travel forum and how it works? And why post on an English language forum, I am sure there are plenty of French language ones out there in cyber space.

Celiaanne May 2nd, 2008 03:44 AM

Maybe it was just done for fun ... a student of French just trying it out? I think we all got the jist (sp?) of it.

fodorite_reject May 2nd, 2008 04:22 AM

Maybe she's a terrorist. ;)

ira May 2nd, 2008 04:35 AM

Bonjour C,

>Chercher pour Bruxelles sous les "Destinations".

ciaodeb May 2nd, 2008 04:54 AM

I used an internet translation program:

Author: _Christina_ Dates: 05/01/2008, 08:34 pm good day! I am to travel to Brussels in Belgium. When must I do? I want to do funny something that does not cost a lot of money. Respondez, itself it pleases you. Merçi!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If this is a real person, she is going to Brussels and asks best time to go (of year?) and further asks for suggestions of activities that are not expensive. Respond if you please. Thanks.
If the translation is correct 100% then her French is not. I agree that it may be a joke to our English board. Even if it is in French, it is empty of information that we would need to reply to. So I say to Christina:
_christina_
Si ceci est une vraie question vous avez besoin de plus d'information. Quand pensez-vous à aller à Bruxelles ? Quel type d'activités appréciez-vous ? Vous obtiendriez la plupart des suggestions si vous avez écrit dans l'anglais.
I speak Italian but used the translations system to put into French:
"Whether this is a real question you need more information. When are you thinking of going to Brussels? What type of activities do you enjoy? You would get most suggestions if you wrote in English."
I think I have the gist of what she is asking, it is similar to Italian. Wonder if she will now reply back?
StCirq May 2nd, 2008 05:59 AM
OMG, what could be worse than a bad internet translation of badly executed French to begin with?
" I want to do something funny..." ... oh, please...
I think we should stick to English for this one.
In Brussels you can go see the Mannequin Pis - that could be construed as both amusant and funny.
Padraig May 2nd, 2008 06:04 AM
StCirq wrote: "In Brussels you can go see the Mannequin Pis"
The most over-rated single tourist attraction I have ever seen.
BTilke May 2nd, 2008 06:16 AM
In addition to my suggestions above, we thought the renovated Atomium was amusing (and better than we'd expected, esp. compared to how beat up and skeevy it was in the late 1990s). The extensive Barbie exhibit was a hoot--I still have two of the three Barbie outfits shown in the photos here:
http://atomium.pluritech.com/Article...g=en&id=69
The bar is stylin' and I hear some good things about the restaurant (and also some mixed reviews), have to try it soon.
StCirq May 2nd, 2008 06:21 AM
Oh, I totally agree, Padraig. In fact, it's just gauche. But it fits the "amusant" criterion, no?
hypatia May 2nd, 2008 06:27 AM
If the OP is not a bored troll than it is a child...
Nikki May 2nd, 2008 07:02 AM
Tough crowd.
This is very likely a post from somebody who is planning to travel to Brussels and learning some French, which she thought she'd try out for fun when posing the question. I bet she won't make that mistake again. I hope it doesn't stop her from trying to speak French in Belgium, where I trust she will receive a warmer reception.
DonTopaz May 2nd, 2008 07:21 AM
I hope it doesn't stop her from trying to speak French in Belgium, where I trust she will receive a warmer reception.</i?</b?
She would have a very good chance of receiving a chilly reception if she speaks French in the Flanders region of Belgium.
_christina_ May 2nd, 2008 08:46 AM
i am learning french. right now. my verbal agility is very limited, and my question was for a class project. thanks for your encouragement -.-
Padraig May 2nd, 2008 08:56 AM
christina, try your luck at http://forum.wordreference.com/ . And please use the "shift" key!
_mme_x_ May 2nd, 2008 09:55 AM
I am deeply offended by the harsh critiscim you have endowed upon this harmless post by a young student of French. _Christina_, a very bright student, was simply hoping to enrich her knowledge of a foreign place and to find a French-speaking individual with whom she could practice her French. If you ARE a French-speaker(and if you are NOT, I do not know why you entered the conversation in the first place), I am sure that you have committed grammatical offenses in your second langauge in the past... but I'm hoping that those that you communicated with were understanding and willing to help, rather than harshly critical and condescending. We realize that this is an English-language site, but as it is a well-known forum on the WORLD WIDE web, we were hoping to find like-minded individuals who would be willing to give us travel advice and humor us by allowing us to practice our French in the process. Thank you to those who were willing to do so. We will take our inquiries elsewhere in the future.
Michel_Paris May 2nd, 2008 10:25 AM
Pauvre Christina, les gens ici peuvent être parfois un peu 'difficile'.
Je vous félicite pour votre effort, et je vous encourage de continuer vos études de la langue.
Bon courage!
M.
P.S. Je n'ai jamais visiter, mais il y a sur ce site des gens qui ont êcrit sur leurs vacances à Bruxelles, avec beaucoup d'information.
tekwriter May 2nd, 2008 10:59 AM
mme_x - are you Christina's French teacher? Not that your intentions are bad, but misguided if you instructed your students to use a website like Fodor's to practice their beginning French lessons. There must be plenty of other social networking sites you could research and recommend, frequented by children all over the globe, other than an English-speak site devoted to serious travel advice. Without explanation of Christina's original post, no one should be expected to provide a meaningful reply. Dommage, mais bonne chance!
Padraig May 2nd, 2008 11:35 AM
_mme_x_, you are too easily offended, and I hope Christina is not as easily upset as you seem to be.
She tried to buy meat in a fishmonger's, that's all. Most of the responses to which you seem to have taken exception were of the "Huh? What's that about?" nature. I am pleased that she was sufficiently forthright to clear up the confusion, and hope she is not discouraged by her experience here.
_mme_x_ May 2nd, 2008 11:58 AM
Yes, I am Christina's French teacher, and I do applaud her effort. It was not my intention to use this forum as a means of "social networking." They are planning trips abroad to francophone countries and are doing research, and had hoped to come to the "experts" for advice. Please excuse me for encouraging them to do so in French... the intention was for those who speak French (perhaps natives of their destination) to reply.
I do not think I am alone in thinking some of the responses to her post were a bit rude. We will not be using this forum in the future, and I do apologize for any confusion that this may have caused.
Nikki May 2nd, 2008 12:22 PM
Please do not be discouraged about using the Fodor's message boards. This is a wonderful resource for finding information about all sorts of travel. It is just not the usual thing for questions to be posed in languages other than English. There is some use of other languages, but only in a context in which people clearly understand what is being done.
People in this type of community end up following certain written or unwritten conventions, and it is not always clear to the newcomer what those conventions are. That is why it is a good idea to read for a while to get a feeling for the place before posting.
That said, there is always a possibility of misunderstandings. People take things as rude that weren't meant that way. Also, there are always a few things that might actually be rude. It's good to try to maintain a sense of humor about them, although that isn't always easy.
Christina, you seem to have a good attitude in your explanation, thanks for sticking with us.
Michel_Paris May 2nd, 2008 12:28 PM
MMe,
Please tell her not to give up. Post in English, and ask for some french in the answers.
Pas de problème avec cette idée!
This is an English site, so posters exclusively post in English, so a question in French would tend to "clang" a bit.
There are french speakers here, so if we can help...
Dukey May 2nd, 2008 12:33 PM
Also tell her that the useage of English on this board by some posters isn't exactly perfect, either.
janisj May 2nd, 2008 12:36 PM
_mme_x_: IF christina had said something like "I am learning French and want to practice. Here is my question (and then change into French) . . . . . ."
She would have gotten ENTIRELY different responses. As it was it looked very much like a troll - especially since she registered and just to post this. I was one of the few who was taken in because I don't speak French and didn't have a clue how bad the grammar was.
For you to register to jump on Fodorites - who are among the most helpful folks you will find anywhere on the web - is really not on . . . . .
It would have been MUCH better for christina to come back and say something like "Sorry - I am learning French and though I'd try it out. Does anyone have the answers to my questions?"
I think your actions are worse than christina's.
cocofromdijon May 2nd, 2008 12:37 PM
Bonsoir mme x et christina, je viens de lire ce post et je suis désolée de ce qui vous arrive.
Je pense aussi que ce n'est pas le bon endroit pour écrire en français car trop peu de Fodorites le parle couramment et sans fautes et il y a très peu de français. Pourquoi ne pas essayer plutôt des sites français directement?
Il y a une version française de Tripadvisor, voir aussi Voyageforum, routard, petit futé, auféminin... Là je pense que christina pourra faire des progrès (et avoir des réponses)beaucoup facilement.
Je vous souhaite bonne chance à toutes les deux et j'espère que vous ne garderez pas une vision trop négative de Fodors, qui est une vraie mine d'information mais anglophone uniquement même si les membres s'essaient au français de temps en temps (trop rarement à mon goût!)
Cordialement
Corinne
ciaodeb May 2nd, 2008 12:56 PM
Well said, Corinne.
hypatia May 2nd, 2008 04:19 PM
I live next to a pre-teen boy...last week there were three girls hanging around my property( doing cartwheels)..They rang my doorbell and when asked what they needed stated they were told by their teacher to introduce themselves to the neighbors(yeah, right I'm sure)The next day they were back again asking foolish questions of my spouse...and you guessed it the next day as well....spring is here ....if she wants to have fun practicing... well let her...it's better than a chat room
MademoiselleFifi May 2nd, 2008 07:09 PM
Merci pour la liste des sites français, Coco.
Zerlina May 3rd, 2008 07:41 AM
Madame X should inform herself before handing out assignments.
www.tripadvisor.com has a forum in French where her pupils can practice - unless they get shot down by the native French speakers.
suze May 3rd, 2008 08:11 PM
<We will not be using this forum in the future>
That will be your loss because there is a wealth of excellent travel information here. Just ask your questions in English. If everyone who was studying or spoke a 2nd language used or practiced it here, well the forum would be a pretty confusing place.
