It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...
European style...

No snow in Innsbruck?
Freiberg yesterday: https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c761b2e4a7.jpg Dresden today: https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...56d79496e5.jpg |
Wow!!! These Christmas photos are so beautiful!!! Even though I hate the cold, I wish I was there!
|
Ingo - there's plenty of snow in Fulpmes and on the Stubai glacier. We're headed back to Innsbruck today so will see if it snowed there overnight.
|
Ingo - today we took the tram from Fulpmes to Innsbruck - you had suggested it to us a few years ago when we first attempted to make this trip, but I was under the impression it only ran on weekends and school holidays? Anyway, we enjoyed the trip, although it's probably prettier in the summer.
|
Ingo - and no snow in Innsbruck today either, but it's coming down like gangbusters right now in Fulpmes.

Mel - thanks for the info. I thought Innsbruck would also get some snow but it seems it's "protected" by the surrounding mountains. I bet the people in Fulpmes - and you - are happy that the town gets tons of snow. YAY! Btw, about an inch snow on the ground in Dresden (old town) and about 10 - 20 inches in the Erzgebirge (Ore mountains).
That Stubaital tram runs all year round daily, every 30 minutes. The ride is for sure prettier in summer with the green pastures, wooden houses with flower boxes, grazing cows .... Glad you did it, though! |
Christmastime in Europe is so magical!
|
It's snowing like crazy tonight in Fulpmes
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...9305a3b4ff.jpg Fulpmes, Austria |
Looks beautiful, Mel.
Those European buildings, twinkling lights, snow, very appealing little stores, it has the ‘magic’ we lack. Someone had decorated their gum tree with red baubles on our warm, sunny walk yesterday….Christmas in Australia 😎 |
Lovely!

Adelaidean - I remember those Christmases all too well. Some photos from the Mayrhofen Advent Market today - it was held in a forest and the snow was the perfect touch. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7c7e9f1082.jpg Mayrhofen https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...12aca443f1.jpg Mayrhofen https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...0e6f9eacd6.jpg Mayrhofen |
Making me miss Christmas markets in Europe! Munich was a fun one in 2019. My favorite is Salzburg. Nurnberg in 2017 was amazing too. Vienna was incredible too. How can I choose a favorite? Oh then there's Prague...
|
So beautiful! Nature put the cherry on top with those snow-covered branches! Gorgeous photos!
|
I've wanted to visit the Christmas Markets for years and haven't made it happen yet. Fabulous pictures... and that snow! Thanks so much for sharing.
|
Thank you for sharing Ingo!! Looks so wonderful!!
Regards, Amar Vancouver |
We arrived in St Cristina yesterday, and went to Ortisei this evening - very festive!

Very festive, indeed! Beautiful pictures again, thanks Mel!
Oh, are these the prices for Glühwein etc. in the second picture? If so, then quite expensive, I'd say. And a Hot Dog 8 Euro? |
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...9285dde74f.jpg
It's cold, wet and windy. Day 10 of rain, rivers full, mud in all the fields and still our parish church, with Roman foundations, has managed to host 41 Christmas trees all decorated for charities around town. My tree. |
Very nice Bilbo.
Oh, are these the prices for Glühwein etc. in the second picture? If so, then quite expensive, I'd say. And a Hot Dog 8 Euro? Your eyes are better than mine Ingo, I have no idea. We've only had gluhwein once, and that was in Austria. We prefer relaxing in a cozy wine bar:) |
We went to the Selva Christmas Market for a bit this evening. One kiosk was selling oysters and we noticed that folks were drinking wine in actual stemware. More my scene (minus the oysters).

Mel, thanks for the info. With focus on the actual wine quality I'd also prefer the bar over the market stall. Beautiful pictures again, the mountains and the snow add to the ambience of the markets. Am I right that there is far more snow on the northern side of the Alps (Tyrol e.g, Fulpmes where you started.) than on the southern side?
I have never seen a market here in Germany (or in the Czech Republic) being sponsored by a hotel or restaurant if it was not on their grounds. But I've seen plenty of tiny markets being organised by hotels, restaurants, supermarkets/groceries and other businesses. Love the panettone variety in your last picture! (Side note: I splurged and bought a panettone made by a small bakery in Sicily. Italian friends who run an Italian deli here brought it from their recent trip home. It comes in a box and bag from Dolce & Gabbana. LOL - but it makes a very nice Christmas present :-) ) |
Am I right that there is far more snow on the northern side of the Alps (Tyrol e.g, Fulpmes where you started.) than on the southern side?
Yes. Fulpmes and Mayrhofen received about 40 cm of snow while we were there. They were carting it off by the truck load and it caused some train disruptions. Our bus from Fulpmes to Innsbruck got stuck crossways in the road while trying to turn around. Made for an interesting journey. My Mom loves panettone - wish I could figure out how to take one home to her. A bit of a luggage hog those panettone. |
I make panettone most months at home, it is pretty easy, just a brioche with fruit, glazing, honey and almonds, give it a go
|
I love to bake, so maybe I'll do that.
|
Trying to choose a favourite photo, Mel, so far the windowsill in Selva and those pine trees with snow on them are winning out, but really, I love the decorations, the lights, the mood, ….
|
Adelaidean - I think the snow covered trees is my favorite. The setting for that market was just so darn pretty...but incredibly cold...and that's from someone who isn't generally a cold weenie.
Ingo - we were back in Ortisei today and I got a close up of those sausage prices - you were right about that 8 euro hot dog. Must be a special dog, lol. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...5b3d9768af.jpg Ortisei |
LOL - thanks Mel.

Dreamy scenes!

Salzburg, where we're spending Christmas - the weather has been awful with wind gusts up to 90 kph, but it's not keeping people inside.

Merry Christmas, Mel. Thank you for sharing the pretty scenes of the holidays across the Alps. Brings back fond memories of visits to the Christmas markets in Budapest and Vienna in past years. Haven't been to one in the Alpine villages though.
|
Merry Christmas to you both. Looks wonderful, very christmassy.
|
Happy Christmas, Mel, and thanks for sharing these lovely photos with us.
