I was going to add Croatia too. Lots of choices.

In the Aeolian Islands north of Sicily the island of Panarea might fit the bill. It is known as the most exclusive of the Aeolian's. Although it was originally inhabited by fishermen, it is now mostly a summer resort for wealthy northern Italians. There are several small hotels or villas to rent by the week. There are no cars on the island, the taxis are modified golf carts. The island the top of a submerged mountain. The water around the island is beautiful and in the evening you can watch Stromboli erupt in the distance.

I highly recommend Palma de Majorca, Spain. I would fly there tomorrow!

Hvar is nice, but not capri...I like Lipari and Panarea

Ischia is wonderful. The Hotel Mezzatore is devine.
It is a short ferry trip from Naples. Of course, the Amalfi Coast is also great and you do not want a car. All the best, michael |
How does Procida compare to Ischia?

Corsica & Elba are both beautiful islands. Corsica has stunning cliffs(bonifacio),great restaurants/hotels,amazing mountains & beaches (better than Capri)but is on a much larger scale. Elba is small & main beaches can get busy but if you hire a car you can discover great places & the main town has good supermarkets/restaurants.

Santorini has sort of a similar "feel" to Capri, but it's even more beautiful imho, and the volcano lends it an air of mystery that Capri doesn't have.
And if you stay in Oia, it's quieter and more tranquil than much of Capri. (Although I'm sure there are tranquil spots on Capri, I just didn't get there.) |
I love Positano
Also, just spent 5 nights in Santa Margherita Ligure and was very impressed. I had never heard of it until I discovered it via this forum. Much more upscale than I anticipated. About 3 miles(or short ferry ride) from Portofino, which is just gorgeous, but SML had so much more to offer. Great shops, lots of good restaurants, nice walking town. The colorful stucco buildings are decorated with trompe l'oeil, there are beautiful lush hills all around. Also, I'm glad I chose to stay there instead of Cinque Terre because that could have gotten old after a few days. About 1-1.5 hour train from SML |
