Is There Anywhere Else Like Capri?
In my on going drive to always see something new, I don't want to return to Capri, quite yet.
What are the other European destinations with a similar feel? I'm not referring to a day trip, but a four or five night stay. |
I'm not answering your question, but curious where you stayed and that you did as we are heading there in 2 months.
|
Ischia near Capri to me was even better than Capri.
Corfu, Greece, Greek islands volcano islands in southern Italy? |
To me the beauty of Europe is the diversity of experiences. I'm not sure how Capri "feels" to you, but I would guess that maybe the Greek islands might float your boat.

Salina, Lipari....
Ibiza.. Hvar |
There was a discussion about this on the Caribbean forum.
St Barts apparently, which is as French as Camembert, and a lot lot closer. |
Santorini comes close in the sheer beauty department. In fact, I think it's prettier than Capri ( is that possible?!). I also prefer the food in Santorini to most of what we found in Capri which was overpriced and only slightly better in many cases than Chef Boyardee!

We've been to St. Barths a number of times and it is similar to Capri in many ways, but I'm looking for Europe.
Although we loved Capri, we did not like our hotel, the Villa Le Scale, at all, and wouldn't recommend it. I found Capri to be physically beautiful and quite unique. Very hip, fun... I loved the little buses, the towns, the lack of a "package tour" vibe and none of the huge mega hotels that go with that. The island is certainly crowed during the day, but in the evening it's quite different. We were there during a thunderstorm and power outage in a pizzeria. We ended up talking to the people next to us and were invited back to their palazzo for gelato. It just seems like that kind of place! |
I'm curious as to why you didn't like Villa Le Scale as I'll be staying there in mid-July for three nights? It seems so beautiful and I've read so many positive reviews about it.

Sorry, Sapphire 43. You may have a very different experience!
I planned the timing of our trip around their availability. The "famous" Vincent was off for the duration of our stay, returning the day we left. The woman who owns the villa was "at the helm" in his place. Her attitude was beyond anything! She had friends staying at the villa and, therefore, no help at all was forth coming. We felt very much that we were intruding on her space. The pool wasn't heated, as promised, the hotel only tidied as they prepared for a wedding the day after our departure. At no time could we ask a simple question or make a simple request! When Anna Maria (the owner) found out I work in the travel industry she told us she was going to change our room. I had carefully chosen the room we had and really didn't want this, but didn't want to appear ungrateful for the "upgrade". There was only one other couple staying at the hotel at the time. I didn't care for the room we were in, although others were beautiful. All in all the hotel itself is quite lovely. Vincent returned only to be more obnoxious, if possible, than Anna Marie. When we left the hotel Anna Marie was insistent that we submit a positive report of the hotel on TripAdvisor. I've never had anyone ask that of me before. I was tempted to do the opposite but decided to let it be. Happy to answer other questions. |
Much less "cosy" than Capri, but Sardegna has spectacular scenery.

Funny - I've seen mixed reviews of Vincent at Ville Le Scale - many reviews saying he was charming and helpful sprinkled with comments about his arrogance so I guess we'll just have to see which one we get. Hopefully we'll have a nice experience - I'll post upon our return.

We are planning a trip there last week of August staying at the Quisisana, perhaps consider staying there. I hear its magnificent.

Capri is pretty. I also liked Ischia, but of all the islands I've seen, Santorini possesses the most astonishing beauty. You will not be disappointed. Incredible!

Have you ever been to Malta? We hired a car there and toured the island - and Valetta - for 4 days. Wonderful place with lots to see.

Welch,
I'm quite surprised that you had such a terrible experience. Our stay at the Villa Le Scale was simply the best we've ever had. I got a chuckle at your assessment of the "famous Vincent". It took him a day or two to warm up to us, but we attributed it to professionalism rather than arrogance . We felt that he took his time assessing us before he would approach us. We are rather laid-back and don't take ourselves seriously. I'm sure we are 180 degrees from some of the Villa's more famous guests. Within a few days he knew what we wanted before we did, and he displayed a warmth that we wouldn't have guessed on day 1. I'm sure that had he been there the entire length of your stay it would have ended up being pleasantly memorable. |

I'm certain there must be something to all the positive reviews of Villa Le Scale! Our experience was unfortunate. We wandered into a very different situation than usual. That aside, we loved the island! Now I'm contemplating Santorini for a few days of our next vacation. We had planned to travel to Marrakech at the top of the trip but the heat is making me nervous. Even if the temperature is not very different in Greece (although it appears to be), the proximity to the water will make me feel cooler. |
Santorini !
|
You may have already been there. But, Positano has the same feel. DH likes Positano better than Capri.
Also, maybe, Cinque Terre? |
Also, maybe Croatia? Split, Hvar and Dubrovnik seem really pretty.
