Chania is a great place, but it has a serious lack of beaches and places to swim. If you like the harborfront, restaurants, relaxing and shopping it can be a great experience. If you want to swim and be lazy on the beach Myconos is a better place. Myconos starts to get busy around the 20th of June and I'd probably want reservations after that date. We've been to Chania and Crete for 2-3 weeks for each the last five years. You don't need reservations unless you have a specific place in mind. There are plenty of places to stay'
