Is 5,000.00euros good for 1 week in Paris?

Hello,

I am traveling with my spouse in a week and we have all our airfare, hotel, activities prepaid and wanted to know how much to carry for food, fine dining and spending as well as a VIP car service which is 800euros while we are there. So less the car service we will have 4700euros

At least one meal a day is also prepaid for....

FrenchMystiqueTours May 10th, 2014 09:03 AM

Hmmmm. You're cutting it close. Perhaps 10,000€ ought to do it. ;)

bilboburgler May 10th, 2014 09:04 AM

Not sure what you are going to do with the 4700. Lets assume a bunch of coffee stops, musuems and at least one big meal with good wine I guess you could stump up 300E a day, so that might use up 2100.

If you cannot find a use for it I could send you a SAE. :-)

TPAYT May 10th, 2014 09:17 AM

Why would you need so much cash? Shops & restaurants take credit cards. IMHO you only need cash for small purchases and you can take that out at ATM's a few hundred at a time.

Tulips May 10th, 2014 09:20 AM

Try Faubourg St Honore and Avenue Montaigne. You may need more than 5000...

Seriously Kimmie, an 800 euro car service for Paris? The city is made for walking, what are you going to do with a car service?

janisj May 10th, 2014 09:22 AM

First of all don't take ANY cash w/ you (or very little). Use cash machines,.

if your hotel, some meals and 'activities' , whatever that means, are paid for you are really only talking about a few meals and shopping. Just how much shopping do you plan on doing?

And why on god's green earth are you spending €800 on a car service?

janisj May 10th, 2014 09:23 AM

We were posting at the same time . . .

Ruby99 May 10th, 2014 09:24 AM

It totally depends on what you want to do while you are there. I can easily make it on just 50€/day, and that includes picking up some nice pastries.

I certainly hope you aren't bringing the €s in cash ?

Kimmie86 May 10th, 2014 09:28 AM

Thank you all for your input.

Activities include river tours, Eiffel tower museums, French Open etc...

The Car service is for take me to dinner late in the night and to my vow renewal...(It's my birthday trip).

Not all in cash but in total and reserve.

Robert2533 May 10th, 2014 09:30 AM

If you have that much loose change lying around, then no, it will not last the week... Someone would be sure to relieve you of your cash in due time...

It appears someone is trying to pull a leg or two!

Kimmie86 May 10th, 2014 09:33 AM

Robert2533 Not sure I understand you.....It is not all in cash.....the total figure.

Kimmie86 May 10th, 2014 09:36 AM

FrenchMystiqueTours are you being serious?

janisj May 10th, 2014 09:37 AM

Kimmie: Robert and others may be skeptical because you are throwing around some very big numbers to pay for a tiny part of your trip. Since most everything is paid for except a few nice dinners, and this VERY expensive car service, not everyone may be taking you seriously.

Christina May 10th, 2014 09:42 AM

I think people were afraid you were going to carry that around with you in cash, or leave it in your hotel room in cash, that's all. So not a good idea, of course.

So let's see, 4700 euros for a week, not including hotel, gives you more than 600 euro a days for spending money and fine dining. No one else can tell you what you need as a budget for buying "stuff", which I imagine is what you are thinking. Do you want to buy a lot of clothes or handbags, maybe expensive, or something like that? Because if you are just talking souvenirs, it would be difficult to even spend 600 euro a day, even dining at top restaurants, if your hotel is paid for.

You really don't need that much, is there something we don't understand about why you would think it would cost that much? Even in nice restaurants for dinner, I wouldn't think you'd usually spend more than 200 euro for dinner for a couple. I'll admit I don't dine in those kind of places, but I presume you aren't going to dine in a Michelin 3* restaurant for dinner every night. I know in more modest, but not cheap, restaurants, you can spend around 50-75 euro for dinner per person.

Tulips May 10th, 2014 09:43 AM

Kimmie, it's just that is a very large amount of money to spend on a week in Paris. If you are spending that, because you have VIP tickets for the French Open, private tours and dinners at 3 star restaurants every evening, you could very well need 5000 euros.

'Vow renewals' is a very American thing, so I have no idea if this is an expensive thing to do in Paris. If you are doing this at the Ritz and inviting 100 people, then 5000 will not be enough.

But the question as you asked it, if 5000 euros is enough for a week in Paris; of course it is.

Kimmie86 May 10th, 2014 09:53 AM

Thanks janisj. It is my 10th Anniversary and Birthday so....I plan to have a ball. Just need to know how much to ball...LOL

Christina - Yes I plan to gift myself a Fendi something....no clothes.

Tulips everything is already paid for our vow renewals and French Open.

Kimmie86 May 10th, 2014 09:58 AM

It is an intimate renewal. Just the two of us on my birthday.

bilboburgler May 10th, 2014 10:13 AM

Buying Italian in Paris?

janisj May 10th, 2014 10:15 AM

That's what I thought too bilboburgler - why go to Paris to buy Italian leathers/designers?

Kimmie86 May 10th, 2014 10:39 AM

Well please suggest something Parian. I have 10 Fendi pieces and was just looking something to add to it.

It's like why but Chinese in America.

nytraveler May 10th, 2014 10:56 AM

It depends entirely on how much shopping you want to do and what you want to buy.

The amount you have will cover upscale dinners every night and I can't imagine that you will want to eat MIchelin* meals for lunch and dinner every day - or they will have to roll you down the sidewalk and the car makes sense (otherwise I would bag the car except to and fro the airport).

And if you want to buy one or two nice scarves or whatever you are OK. If you want to do designer shopping on any scale you need to up your budget by multiples - since a purse can easily take the whole budget and those things tend to be much more expensive in Paris than in NY.

FrenchMystiqueTours May 10th, 2014 11:04 AM

No. The winkie was meant to indicate that. Your budget is very generous so I'm sure that's enough of a budget and have a nice trip. :)

Kimmie86 May 10th, 2014 11:24 AM

Thanks frenchmystiquetours.

Only have fine dining planned for 2 nights.

We plan to eat at local cafés. The real Parisian way for lunch. Hotel comps breakfast.

Car stays. Taxi is about the same cost on average and doesn't run at 1/2am when I have the dinners plan.

Christina May 10th, 2014 11:39 AM

If you plan to be out until 1-2 am, yeah, having your own private driver isn't a bad idea.

You need to separate your Fendi budget, etc., from the rest of your trip to make any sense of a budget. There isn't any way in the world you can spend 600 euro a day eating at local cafes for lunch and dinner, and only "fine dining" twice. From what you say, 150-200 euro per day budget would be generous, keeping out your purchases which have nothing to do with travel. I have no idea what Fendi costs or that kind of stuff as I don't buy it, but if you do, you should know.

socaltraveler May 10th, 2014 11:42 AM

Please explain how a taxi and an 800€ car service are 'about the same cost on average'.

Other than that have a great trip, vow renewal and happy birthday.

annhig May 10th, 2014 11:42 AM

Kimmie,

unless you are planning to eat 2 meals a day at the Ritz or to spend all day shopping in the Rue Faubourg St Honore, your budget should be fine. even with that car service, you ought to be able to go home with some change in your pocket from your €4,300 [though of course you'll be using ATMs so that won't really apply].

I'm not the person to ask about high-end shopping, but the aforesaid Rue Faubourg St Honore would be a good place to start for some specifically french luxury items. and if you want to add to your Fendi collection, undoubtedly you will find somewhere to sell it to you.

enjoy your vow renewal and birthday, and have a blast. And please some back here and tell us what it's like to be able to spend nearly €5000 in a week in Paris, because we'd really, really like to know!

Kimmie86 May 10th, 2014 12:06 PM

Thanks annhig, will do. Visit my blog as well.

I have 10 trips plan so at 790€ it is about 79€ per ride that picks me up from my hotel wait around and takes me back after midnight.

I will add 1500€ for the Fendi piece.

flpab May 10th, 2014 03:26 PM

http://girlsguidetoparis.com/insider...ps&style=Haute Couture

Read this, I would go for Hermes or Chanel if I had money but for me all I wanted was a pair of Repetto ballet flats. The line was so long to get into the store and all these Asian girls were ouside posing with their shoe bags for pictures.

DeniseA can shop so you should read her trip reports.
Where are you doing your vow renewal? Two friends did theirs at the American Church in Paris. Just the two of them and a photographer. Very romantic. Can't you get a taxi for that late night out?
Have fun!

Kimmie86 May 10th, 2014 03:51 PM

Thanks flpab.

In one of the gardens near the Eiffel Tower. Had a church wedding so looking some different this time around.

nytraveler May 10th, 2014 05:49 PM

Not sure what restaurants you are going to be leaving at 2 am. Typically fine dining places you would reserve for 8 or 8:30 pm and be finished by about 11 at the latest. Most restaurants don;t stay open past midnight - since fine dining places have only 1 seating per evening.

If you want to hang out at a trendy central brasserie or cafe they might be open that late - but for drinking not dining. And local places will not be open that late.

cafegoddess May 10th, 2014 06:35 PM

Hi kimmie,

Forgive me for asking, why is the car service costing you 800€? We have taken tours by private car service and it didn't cost nearly as much.

If you want to buy something special, may I just suggest the new LV "Lockit" bag. Make an appointment with the concierge at Louis Vuitton so you don't have to stand in line.

Have a great time!

Robert2533 May 10th, 2014 06:38 PM

Very few places besides jazz clubs and dance spots are open past midnight. Paris can be very quiet after midnight unless you're in the right location or in a tourist dive.

Kimmie86 May 10th, 2014 07:17 PM

Thank you. It is an E-Class with driver for 10 trips.

StCirq May 10th, 2014 07:25 PM

10 private car tours in a week's time to the tune of 800 euros? Someone must enjoy tossing money away. Where would you get the 79 euro per taxi drive figure, anyway? And why wouldn't a normal Parisian cab suffice at a fraction of the price (and yes, it would be a fraction), except maybe for the vow renewal?

And yes, what's open so late at night? Surely, you're not going to be at Michelin or other famous restaurants at that time of night!

With 4,700 euros I could spend a marvelous month touring all over France.

There's something "off" about this post. It's maybe a troll or a naïve traveler with more money than experience, or a humblebrag, or just weird. If it's genuine, though, and of course it may be, I wish the OP well in her travels and hope she comes home with some euros in her pocket for the next trip.

DebitNM May 10th, 2014 07:40 PM

She appears to be a movice blogger. Perhaps she is looking for some meat for her lean blog. Perhaps she is sincere; have a grand time. I would have no trouble doing Paris, 1st class all the way for that kind of pocket money. Bon voyage~

DebitNM May 10th, 2014 07:41 PM

S/B Novice, not movice.

StCirq May 10th, 2014 07:46 PM

Yes, VERY novice. Oh dear me.............

Kimmie86 May 10th, 2014 08:34 PM

Not novice. Very sincere.

Not looking any attention just seeking advise. I have done big trip like this before in the US and came home with change but there wasn't anything I couldn't do due to lack of funds.

The two resturants are Lasserre and Le Dali.

If have better suggestions please post. Thanks.

janisj May 10th, 2014 10:57 PM

My suggestion is travel like a 'normal' person - upscale but 'normal'.

Like maybe a private driver for the renewal and back. Otherwise taxis will be very easy for a tiny fraction of your €800. You apparently don't need to scrimp at all. That is great. But why throw money around like a drunken sailor?

bvlenci May 11th, 2014 02:11 AM

Am I the only one who wonders why there are €4700 euros left after subtracting the 800-euro car service from the original €5000?
