Internet and Digital Camera in Italy
How common are internet cafes in major cities in Italy (i.e. Rome, Florence, Venice)?
I am in the final stages of planning my trip and I am wondering with regards to my digital camera, should I take an extra memory card/jump drive or should I be able to easily download them to a disk from time to time. Any advice? Thanks. |
With 1gb memory cards at $25, I don't see any reason to stop anywhere to transfer files to another medium. Unless it's your own laptop back at the hotel.

What brand of 1 gig cards can be had for $25.00? Where do you get them? The ones I have seen are closer to $50
|
Kingston 1GB SD card is $25.95 at Buy.com. $6 mail-in rebate cuts that to <$19.95.

Mirabile visu! I'm on it.

If only it were so for xD. :'(

Wow! 25 bucks for 1gb! I am soooo checking that out!
I currently have a 256mb card that holds about 220 3mp images.....1gb would be more than enough I think for my trip to florence! yay! |
I just checked the buy.com website and didn't see the 25 buck 1 gb sd card. Can you provide a link in case I am performing the query wrong.
thanks in advance! |
I just went to the buy.com website also and didn't see the Kingston Technology 1 GB SD card either. I searched for it on the buy.com search engine and it came up - cheapest memory I ever bought.

I just bought 1 ! thank you so much!!!
I wonder how many 3megapixel pics 1 gb will hold??? hmmm.......the possibilities! |
1GB SD - $25.95, $6 rebate
http://www.buy.com/retail/product.as...amp;adid=17662 1GB xD - $42.99 cheapest ever. shop4.outpost.com/product/4787689 |
what does xD mean? How is that different from SD?
the current memory card i have in my camera now is an SD 256mb card. Does the xD make a big difference? |
BTW, Viking 512MB SD. $22.95, $13 rebate. Same price/byte as the Kingston 1GB:
http://www.buy.com/retail/product.as...amp;adid=17662 ilove2travel29 - a 1GB card should be able to hold about 1,200 3MP files. |
xD is a different format card. Used by Olympus and Fuji mainly. They are usually about twice as expensive as SD cards. They are NOT interchangeable.
Compact Flash is yet another type of card. Their prices are about the same as SD. |
WOW! :)

rk - thanks, but I have 2 Fuji's and there are a few disclaimers on that Fry's site. Any others?

BTW, there are often "free" 256MB SD cards available at ecost.com, after mail-in rebate. Go to their "Bargain Countdown" page and take a look. I say "free" because even if you qualify for free shipping (over $25, I think), there's still a handling fee. Still you're talking about a few dollars.

Going back to the original question, internet cafes are common. I'd take extra memory. We take a small laptop and download, but like the extra memory just in case. When we were in Scandinavia a few years back, we wanted to download the pictures to a disk, but discovered the jump drive for the camera didn't work at any of the internet cafes we went to, and paid, sometimes through the nose, to have the pictures transferred to a disk. It was cheaper doing this in Italy, but still, we liked the convenience of the extra memory and laptop.

I'm so glad you replied, I have been searching high and low on this forum about locations and costs of Internet Cafes in Italy with USB ports and CD/DVD burners, and still haven't found an answer. Everyone keeps replying with 'buy more memory cards' but on a 30 day trip I won't be able to afford enough cards. Can I please ask how much was it for you to transfer your photos to disk. Please include specifics if you remember (how many Gb, onto CD or DVD, city and name/chain of store). I keep seeing internettrain on my searches, has anyone use their shops/services? Any other advice for hard-drive to CD/DVD shops in Florence, Lucerne, Amsterdam, Paris? Thanks! |
Hi rk,
Thanks for the heads up. I got a Viking 512 Mb CF card for $14. ((I)) |
