That Suitehotel looks nice in the rooms -BUT- have you seen the street on which it is located? Very 'industrial'/warehouse looking, and it looks like it's next to the stalls where the flea market is held, and it's across from the busy highway (peripherique). Ick. It's ok to stay a bit off-center but you don't have to trade off Parisian atmosphere to do it.

Yes, I did a Pages Jaunes peek at the neighborhood, and as noted it does sure look more like Newark than Paris. I'll let the group know in about a month after we are there. We are going to do the Marche aux Puces in Montreuil anyway on Saturday morning and there is a certain Citroen parts supplier that is located about a half kilometer away (THAT should give you a clue about the neighborhood- I have a 65 DS19 in my garage ). We have done the 6eme, 5eme 1er before, so we know what we are missing. We tend to go out in the morning , come back after dinner and sleep, so we don't care so much about the area. But if its your first time, probably better to be in the center.

I stayed at Hotel Libertel Austerlitz - i believe that it was just under $100 a night. Nice staff - private bathrooms - comfortable and right next door to the Metro.

In the Porte de Montreuil area, on our recent trip to Paris, my daughter (age 15, but looks older) was pestered nonstop by men when she was shopping in the flea market (by herself). This was during the day and she could ward them off, but I don't know it's an area I'd want to hang around at night.

No.. the way it should work is if you DID take breakfast, the server would ask for your room # so they could indicate on their records that you should be charged. Otherwise, you should not be charged. Just check the billing before you agree to ensure they haven't made a mistake. When we stayed there, the croissant and coffee were fresh and good - we usually eat in the hotel b/c we don't need a large brk. and I like going back to the room to finish getting ready. To me, 6-7€ for coffee, juice and a couple of croissants is a good deal.

Small hotels particularly, in my experience, like to plan for the number of people who will be eating breakfast as they often buy fresh baked items each morning. As a courtesy many hotels often ask you to let them know of your intentions. As we seldom eat breakfast at the hotel but prefer to go to a cafe, we let them know when we arrive that we will not be partaking.
This is eaily done when you arrive. If you decide to have the hotel breakfast some morning, you can usually arrange it wth a little advance notice.

Thanks, Travelnut and robjame. Since the cost of breakfast (8 Euro) was mentioned on the e-mail confirming our reservation, I wondered whether I was supposed to mention it when I e-mailed back with our check in time. Glad to know I didn't need to!

I'm thinking we may want to eat there the first morning since we won't be familiar with the area yet. I appreciate knowing the breakfast was good there, Travelnut.

besides as you mentioned, its often easier to just eat in the hotel the first morning, until you have found your bearings in the neighbourhood.:)
