If you could take one thing from Britain back home what would it be?

For starters how about Royal Doulton china, Chocolate digestive biscuits, cheese and pickle sandwiches?

sandi_travelnut Dec 8th, 2006 04:45 AM

Hugh Grant?

carrolldf Dec 8th, 2006 05:08 AM

Sandi -- you beat me. I saw the title and that was my immediate response.

prhirsch Dec 8th, 2006 05:13 AM

The accent.

waring Dec 8th, 2006 05:29 AM

Melton Mowbray mini pork pies
Branston pickle
Ridiculously strong cheddar cheese
Salad cream
Marmite

I'm told I look like Hugh Grant, and have the accent. Any takers?

sandi_travelnut Dec 8th, 2006 06:46 AM

If it weren't for my DH....

NeoPatrick Dec 8th, 2006 06:50 AM

I've been told I look like Hugh Grant too.

Oh, wait a minute -- that was Ulysses S. Grant.

unaS Dec 8th, 2006 06:52 AM

A Beefeater.

logandog Dec 8th, 2006 06:57 AM

Crown jewels.

tommynyc Dec 8th, 2006 07:00 AM

Just so long as it wasn't Russell Grant!

caroline_edinburgh Dec 8th, 2006 07:03 AM

But prhirsch - which accent ? It varies every few miles.

prhirsch Dec 8th, 2006 07:26 AM

Doesn't really matter, I love them all.

PatrickLondon Dec 8th, 2006 07:54 AM

You wouldn't be so kind as to take Madonna, by any chance?

lemidi Dec 8th, 2006 08:01 AM

These replies are so funny. I hope it keeps going.

carioca4ed Dec 8th, 2006 08:02 AM

I live in Scotland....One thing that I am a bit doubtful that you can get elsewhere,(other than the United Kingdom), is Eccles cakes.....They are named after a small town in England.....If I lived in the U.S.I'd probably try to get someone to smuggle some over.....The nearest thing to heaven....Forget Hugh Grant....He won't give you the comfort you will get when you've tried these !!!!!!

sandi_travelnut Dec 8th, 2006 08:43 AM

boy, those must be some damn good cakes!!

Margo Dec 8th, 2006 12:45 PM

A chienze shower cap from Boots. Got one about 5 years ago, very pretty flowery cap, reminded me of England every time I got in the shower. It last until last year when the elastic gave out. Duf, duf. Couldn't find one at Boots last year.

Seriously--I love my Burberry umbrella that I bought at Heathrow years ago. That umbrella would withstand any storm.

wombat7 Dec 8th, 2006 12:59 PM

Any cheese from Neil's Dairy
Various Kegs of Youngs Special, Bombardier and Abbott
Ian Hislop and Paul Merton to keep me amused
Clarkson to annoy me
Pork scratchings
Kings College (the Cambridge one of course - you can keep the one in London!)
Couple of Manx cats
Picked Onions
Decent Indian food
The Lindasfarne Gospels
A Routemaster
The Guardian
Radio 4
Several paintings from the National Gallery
Tony Blair - to keep George company and as a kind gesture to the UK

Daisy54 Dec 8th, 2006 01:05 PM

A certain adorable bartender from Edinburgh - but DH might have a problem with that, so I'll settle for Irn Bru and real scones.

Mucky Dec 8th, 2006 01:17 PM

Take Tony Blair with you.

;-)

Muck

wombat7 Dec 8th, 2006 01:24 PM

Hey Mucky - I did offer to take Blair - given I was taking so much other stuff, I thought I'd be able to fit him into the container

sandi_travelnut Dec 8th, 2006 01:29 PM

We'll take yours if you'll take ours.

carolyn Dec 8th, 2006 01:57 PM

travelgirl2 Dec 8th, 2006 07:36 PM

Chorley Cakes beat Eccles Cakes - Chorley is another small town not far from Eccles; but prefer Bakewell Tart - Bakewll is a small town not far from Eccles.

David Beckham>>>>>>>

Your wish is our command - you'll be getting him next year in Los Angeles.

Be careful what you wish for.....

Underhill Dec 9th, 2006 10:27 AM

Fortnum & Mason Christmas crackers that hold jewelry.

Tere Dec 9th, 2006 11:29 AM

Lol Sandi , I agree with you, would bring Hugh Grant ,hummmm!!!

annettetx Dec 9th, 2006 05:10 PM

When my husband made business trips to London, this is what we'd ask him to bring home for us:

Walker's Crisps (Ready Salted and Salt & Vinegar flavours)
Yorkshire Gold Tea
demarara sugar
Blue Stilton cheese

We never could narrow it down to just one item!
Annette

bob_brown Dec 9th, 2006 05:28 PM

I would like to take the money I spent. At £1.00 = $2.00 that £7 pizza is a little more expensive than it looks!!

Grandma Dec 10th, 2006 03:15 PM

Oy vey... I agree with Bob Brown... am still recovering from our visit last year. As to what I'd like to take.... that would be a classic Burberry raincoat. My husband bought one in Harrods in '88 and it's still good as new.
Can't find anything like it at any price now in NYC... Burberry has gone veddy, veddy trendy. sigh.....

jody Dec 10th, 2006 03:56 PM

You rock, PatrickLondon! I love Steve Bell!!

I'd take the view from my favoreite room at Plumber Manor in Dorset.

GreenDragon Dec 10th, 2006 04:23 PM

Definitely clotted cream and real scones...

Hugh Grant, possibly. Although I prefer Jason Carter. Or Alistair McKenzie :) (DROOL)

REAL cadbury. Yes, Hershey's definitely doesn't do it right.

Men in kilts. Oh, wait, that's Scotland!
