Regarding the Bruges "high square tower as seen from canal with clocks on each side, and having on top eight sided turrets with steeples on each" - I agree it is the Bruges Belfort. This are 2 photos I took, and fit your description:

Of course the tower is Bruges Belfort! Your photo yk from the canal is exactly like mine. Thanks! But not the same sailing ship I'm sure. So anyone know about my little historical schoolhouse with red shutters or that modern Protestant (I think) church in Antwerp?

Ozarksbill, the shot of the canal w/the belfry in the background, is the <u>most photographed</u> view point in all of Bruges. It's not surprising many of us has the same exact shot! :)
