IDing some Belgium buildings
Here's a long shot...
Having post a trip report on Springtime in Holland and Belgium, can anyone ID a few places photographed in Belgium? This may be futile but maybe someone has a clue. In Gent...statue of a warrior slaying a dragon with sword uplifted high on top a building. In Antwerp...figure of a sailing ship atop a square steeple. In Antwerp...an old looking castle-like structure of perhaps dark brick with turrets on corners each with steeple. In Brugges...high square tower as seen from canal with clocks on each side, and having on top eight sided turrets with steeples on each Any guesses? Thanks...Ozarksbill [email protected] |
Perhaps you could post a link to these photos?
|
I'd like to do that...tell me how as I haven't had the experience. OB
|
Are your photos on an internet site? If so then post the link to the page they're on here by copying the URL and pasting it to a reply on this thread.
If your photos are not on an internet site then I can post them temporarily to my site if you send them to me via email. My email address is in my profile - click on my name to see my profile. |
>In Brugges...high square tower as seen from canal with clocks on each side, and having on top eight sided turrets with steeples on each<
That sounds like the Belfort. Here's a picture: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Belfort_Brugge.jpg Bill |
In Antwerp, if the castle like structure was on the harbor, it is the Urban Maritime Museum,Stedelijk Scheepvaartmuseum

|
In Gent it is probably the Sint Joris Gildehuis: http://tinyurl.com/o7thfx
St Joris is Saint George in English - famous for slaying a dragon. |
In Brugges...high square tower as seen from canal with clocks on each side, and having on top eight sided turrets with steeples on each
Definitely the Belfort. |
Sorry wrong link - that one is the one in Antwerp! Are you sure it is Gent where you took the photo?
|
Me again - the Sint Jorishof in Gent : http://tinyurl.com/r2h7cr ?
|
Did we guess right?

I have to agree with billbarr and lennyba on the Brugge building. It is listed in the Brugge visitors guide as the Bruggemuseum-Belfry.
We were going to attempt climbing some of the 366 stairs but my sore back prevented us from trying. |
Hi ronkala - we climbed it in March and it was kind of a drag at the top - incredibly windy that day.
|
LOL ronkala. I started to climb it and the legs gave up half-way!
|
Thanks guys, for giving it a shot. I will need to post picts as I am able.
Warrior slaying dragon...nope, neither one...this is a figure in armor standing over the dragon with sword uplifted. Sailing ship...must be another one...this one with three masts. Old structure...nope, not really like a castle as you've pictured, just an old building. High square tower...hmm, don't think it is Belfort but let me check again. Any more ideas? Thanks! <High square tower...hmm, don't think it is Belfort but let me check again. Any more ideas?>
I was just there...can't think of anything else like you describe. There was a fairly tall church tower, but it's not square and doesn't have clocks IIRC. |
The only other tall building in the Brugge tourist guide bookm is St-Savior's Cathedral, it's square, but no clocks.

One mystery solved (from Insight Guide-Belgium): the so called "castle-like structure of perhaps dark brick" in Antwerp is the Vleeshuis, now a museum, formerly a butcher's market and guild, hence, the "bacon streaks" of red brick!
But here is another ID quest: Not so far away in Antwerp walking toward the center is my photo of a modern church interior, very plain with a large standing wooden cross up front. Also a small white school house/museum I think noted as the earliest (of what?) Any Antwerp guessers? And any more guesses on that standing warrior figure atop dragon in Gent or the sailing ship in Antwerp atop some buildings? Ozarksbill |
