You're supposed to display preference.

Marilyn Jan 28th, 2004 09:48 AM

Sorry, TheOriginalBob, it's impossible. (OP doesn't say to rank in order of liking -- just places you will ALWAYS come back to.)

Renee Jan 28th, 2004 09:50 AM

Marilyn,

Where were you in Mexico and what did you like most about it. I'm considering it as a mid-year trip.

I have traveled through a lot of Mexico, but am happy to say there is plenty left for me to explore. Most of my trips were by car, so we covered a lot of territory and saw all the bits in between. Without mentioning any beach resorts, and leaving Baja out entirely:

Mexico City, Oaxaca (probably my favorite), San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Taxco, Guadalajara, Colima, Tampumachay, Michoacan coast, Angangueo, Real de Catorce, Palenque, San Cristobal de las Casas, Patzcuaro, Uruapan, Paricutin.

Email me directly if you have questions about a specific place. Mexico is filled with gorgeous, rugged scenery, colorful towns, fascinating archeological ruins, and incredibly friendly people. And it's inexpensive and a much shorter plane ride than Europe or Asia.

There are many cities I would love to return to, but there are also many I would like to see for the 1st time. The only city my wife and I feel an obligation to return to is Dresden. We were there for the first time before the wall came down and were awed by what could probably become the most beautiful city in Europe. We made a vow to return every 4 years to watch the restoration. Our last visit was in 2002 and were accompanied by our daughter who had spent 2 years in Poland in the Peace Corps and had traveled extensively throughout Europe. Though she did not want to accompany us to Dresden her only comment as we entered the heart of the city was "Whoa!" Our next scheduled visit is 2006 to coincide with the re-opening of the Frauenkirche and the centennial celebrations. If I had decided to return to Paris, London, Vienna, Prague or other major tourist desinations every time I went to Europe, I would have missed out on St. Petersburg, Berlin, and especially Istanbul

Paris (I'll ALWAYS have Paris)

Florence - I mean Venice - I mean Tuscany - I mean Umbria (well, I guess I mean anywhere in Italy)

Salzburg - (it must be a subliminal Sound of Music thing)

Sonoma County (especially Healdsburg/Dry Creek Valley and Russian River Valley)

San Diego (This is the year of the Padres, baby. Yeah, I know. I'm crazy)

Admittedly, this is phrased differently from your previous attempt at a "positive" thread (of places that people want to go back to; the earlier thread - - http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34463316 - -was more about giving places a second chance).

But the negative threads seem to get more replies than the positive ones!

Best wishes,

Rex

London.

And I'm not even really an anglophile. It's just that the sense of history (ancient up until 1940's/60's) seems to pour out of every building. Whenever I'm there I feel like I'm in a novel or a Shakespeare play or a Beatles song or? I don't know exactly what it is but its incredibly compelling.
