I think it's a normal inquiry too, but the only the only time they generally are insistent are at 4 star hotels- usually seems to be just a courtesy at hotels like Marriotts. Unless it involves valet parking- that is the big exception- but that is something I rarely use. And I usually travel light.

I have had my bag snatched at small boutique hotels, mostly. Generally more personal service there anyway.

Maybe there is usually a pro forma question at the Hyatt (or Marriott, or whatever) as to whether I needed help with my bag. I certainly don't remember one.
