I miss Paris !!!!

I'm sitting here, it's about 90 degrees. I want to be in Paris on a drizzly day, eating my croissant and having a cup of coffee. Any one else??

Betty Boop Jul 6th, 2002 05:35 PM

make it a chocolat chaud and you are on!!

Lola Jul 6th, 2002 05:36 PM
Today-having lunch at an outdoor cafe, I was wishing I were in a cafe at the Place des Vosges and all that I could hear would be French being spoken!

lori Jul 6th, 2002 05:49 PM

Now I'm really depressed.I'd like to change that to wine and pastries AND CHEESE!

Me Jul 6th, 2002 06:00 PM

I just booked a flight to Paris today!

Sherri Kardell Jul 6th, 2002 06:06 PM

I am now really depressed;
I want to go to Angelina and have a cup of the worlds best hot chocolate;and Shop Shop Shop and of course eat cheese

Sandy Jul 6th, 2002 06:13 PM

Lori, we'll be there August 23rd, for 6 days. Sounds like you know the city fairly well. I'd love to hear more of what you'd be doing... I've already started taking notes... an outdorr cafe at Place des Vosges, Angelina's for hot chocolate. And, what is chocolat chaud?

Barb Jul 6th, 2002 07:18 PM

Chocolat chaud is hot chocolate and Angelina's serves the best in the world! On the Rue de Rivoli, not far from the Louvre. Be sure and bring some home--they sell the mix in small and large bags. I just bought 2 large bags, one for me and one for a friend. It's too hot right now for chocolat chaud, but wait til the first cool morning---yumm!!

Lola Jul 6th, 2002 07:47 PM

And to round out your chocolate experience,go to Laduree on rue Royale between rue St Honore and Place de la Madeleine :O)
Then after you have shopped and don't miss rue Dragon , Left Bank, for shoes !stop at any small patisserie and pick up a pain au chocolate, take it back to your room, relax with the windows open and listen to the sounds of Paris while you relax and savor your pastry~

andi Jul 7th, 2002 07:03 AM

Sherry,

Tell you what. Meet me at Fromagerie on Rue de Seine or maybe the little cheese shop on Ile St. Louis. Then we'll head to Paul on Rue de Buci for some bread and dessert. We'll stroll over the Luxembourg gardens for dejeuner. After lunch, some shoe shopping on rue de dragon then down to rue de cherche midi for some only-in-Paris clothes, and then over to Angelina's for some African hot chocolate.

Greg Gallagher Jul 7th, 2002 08:48 AM

Please please please take me with you all:o)

Anyone know of a good website other than the expedias of the world that has good package deals?

My wife and I are having withdrawal from Paris. I hate it when she gets the shakes and the only cure is a dinner at Le Petit Zinc.

Scarlett Jul 7th, 2002 08:58 AM

Aahh Le Petit Zinc,my first trip to Paris, the first night there, dinner at Le Petit Zinc. And yes, everything was perfect:)
Then hope for a rainy day,you will walk over to the D'Orsay, wander around, fall in love with the statue of the angel bending to place a kiss on the forehead of a baby~then go upstairs and have lunch in the restaurant.Don't forget to look up! the ceiling is lovely.
While it is still drizzley and cool, wander along the Seine, see the way Notre Dame looks in the mist, cross over the small footbridge to Ille St-Louis and have tea and pastries or a small quiche at the Salon de The close to Berthillon.
While there, the sun will come out, you can walk across the Pont Neuf, along the Seine with the bookinistes, buy a poster or two, postcards with pictures of Paris from the 50's.You will have all good intentions of sending them to friends and family, but of course, you will keep them for yourself:)
Greg Gallagher Jul 7th, 2002 09:10 AM

Um Scarlett were you following us? I know you were the one in the Hermes scarf nibbling on a croissant at the cafe on the corner of Rue du Bac and Boulevard Raspail weren't you?

It was raining the day we went to Musee d'Orsay. The bit about the pictures was great (yep, we kept them all).

Well now that we thoroughly miss Paris. Any help?

andi Jul 7th, 2002 09:33 AM

How about film therapy? I just dragged a fellow Paris-phile friend to see The Bourne Identity solely because I heard it had great footage of Paris, which it did. (Otherwise, I'd describe it as a travelogue with violence.) For those of you who live in Boston, the Museum of Fine Arts French Film Festival starts in a couple of weeks.

Hmmm, it's not so hot today, maybe I'll go break open that Angelina's chocolate I bought in April that I was saving for next winter. Also, light the scented candle I mail-ordered for way too much money from Fragonard because I regretted not buying it while I was there.

Other ideas?

cc Jul 7th, 2002 10:53 AM

I just had to cancel a trip to Paris and I'm absolutely miserable. So far I'm consoling myself precisely with film therapy, but thanks for all the ideas for when I finally get there!

Scarlett Jul 7th, 2002 11:01 AM

RE: Film therapy-Ronin is also good.Same idea as Bourne Identity, car chases and all but in Paris!
Now back to eating my way through Paris..
wander over to the Rodin Museum, look through the gardens, then go inside to get a close up look of the Kiss! It is always nice if there is someone with you that you can kiss right about now.
Then over to the Invalides, then on tothe Eiffel Tower where there is man with a small stand making fresh crepes. Mine are usually chocolate, there are many varieties, all are good. While walking along, licking the crumbs off your face, decide which restaurant you would like to dine in tonight.
The hardest choices for me are always-L"Epi Dupin or Thomieux. Then there is Les Olivades and if you want to just feel like you live in the neighborhood, go to Petit St Benoit, the owner will greet you warmly, especially if you have been there before, and th waitress will treat you like one of her children, and the food is good and the company, because you will sit next to someone who will remain a stranger until the main course is served. Then they will chat with you,or use sign language and the rest of the meal and dessert will be spent getting to know them. Then you will leave and that will be that!
Stroll on over to the Seine and just look at the lights, watch the Bateau Mouche silently glide along the river, shining its lights on the buildings.

Greg Gallagher Jul 7th, 2002 01:55 PM

Scarlett stop stop stop no more I give. I just sold my car and cat and scrapped the change out of my couch. I'm leaving tonight. Hahaha. Very descriptive. I can smell the escargot now. Thanks, :o)

Sandy Jul 7th, 2002 02:00 PM

Oh, please don't stop... Reading your posts makes me feel that the anticipation of our Paris trip this August, is almost as good as the realization!

none Jul 7th, 2002 04:59 PM

I posted earlier today on another thread. I was the one who mentioned frosting; there was nothing there to warrant deletion. I don't know who Jessica and Luke are - I'm not trash, and highly doubt that there are either. Others have valid point-of-views too but Fodors does not wish them to be aired. Makes me curious as to why they call these "forums". Bonsoir!

jared Jul 7th, 2002 05:14 PM

was enjoying this thread and was thinking to myself that this was one of the most truely informatyive threads on paris. Of all the searching n fodors, i have gained as much or more from this one thread than any sibgular activity!!

Then as I continued I started to pondor on how nice and calming the thread was to read and how it felt like it felt when I started using fodors, how everyone is happy, then just as I thought that i read the final few posts and the chocalate went cold, hard and bitter, the cheese went sour and the bread mouldy.

to top it all off, my keyboard is playing up so it makes me look like I can't type or s[ell. hmmm,

thankx for the visions in my mind folks. I am going to paris in Sept and have much more to look forward to now.

scarlett Jul 7th, 2002 05:43 PM

well maybe we can get back on track here:)

My anniversary trip to Paris-
we stayed at the Angleterre. We had a suite with a fireplace. It was very nice,we went right out to a local flower shop and bought lilacs and lilies and brought them back to the hotel. The desk clerks were scrambling to find the perfect vase for Madames flowers! We put them on the mantle,in the bathroom,by the bed.It smelled wonderful, what a treat, to wake up in the morning, smelling lilies and lilacs, then to look out the window at the sky over your hotel in Paris. To walk out to the street early early, and see the shopkeepers sweeping the sidewalks, smell the bakery and coffee scents in the air.Wander over to a cafe and sit and watch the people hurrying by,have another coffee, decide what we want to do today.
Why don't we just walk, play it by ear,buy each other small anniversary gifts?
We walked across to the Louvre,to the Antiquarius behind the Louvre where we pretended we could afford a Jean Cocteau lithograph. We wandered in and out of the haute couture shops on the rue de Rivoli.Stopped at Angelinas for chocolate. On to the Madeleine,Galleries Lafayette, over to the Opera Garnier where we would see a ballet that night.
Back across to the Ille de la Cite and St Chappelle, where you could just weep from the beauty of all that stained glass.
Walking up and down the small streets between Blvd St Germain and the Luxembourg Gardens, gazing in the windows of small shops, hand bags, shoes, jewelry.
I bought his gift, he bought mine.
Ending up at the Luxembour Gardens.Sitting at the cafe in the park, having a glass of vin rouge and just watching the children play, the nannies with the strollers, the students from the Sorbonne. Now and then an official looking gentleman coming in or out of the Palace.
Back to the hotel to rest and get ready for the ballet.

Since I can't afford another trip to Paris right now my husband and I are going to Quebec City. It's as close to Paris as one can get here in Canada. Little cafes, Pain au raisin, croissants, waiters with "attitude", And all without having to exchange our dollars. Our next choice for a French getaway is St. Martin but that will have to wait until December.

topping per request

aj Jul 8th, 2002 05:27 AM

My husband just told me last night that he was going to win the lottery this week so we could travel all the time. I will take you all with me! My boss asked me how my weekend was and I said "OK" he could read my face and said not as good as being in Paris? I guess it shows!

s.fowler Jul 8th, 2002 05:34 AM

*SIGH*
I'm just back and I'm ready to go again... pictures begin at http://travelswithus.net/june02/

Lola Jul 8th, 2002 05:37 AM

Wow-well done , S Fowler!!
As if I needed these to make me feel more "homesick" for Paris!! Great photos!

MPA Jul 8th, 2002 07:48 AM

Please keep telling your Paris stories!
I am unable to travel this year, and miss it terribly.
Disregard the unpleasant old complainers, and tell me more stories.
Thank you,thank you.
MissingParisAlso

andi Jul 8th, 2002 07:56 AM

Thanks a lot, Sally. I was having a perfectly nice day at work and you had to go and ruin it with those pictures. Now I've joined the ranks of malcontents who want to be elsewhere. I am so homesick I could cry.

Seriously, totally wonderful pictures.

Yuppers Jul 8th, 2002 09:09 AM

One reason that I keep a minimum of 100,000 miles in my frequent flyer account is so that I KNOW that if I REALLY can't take it anymore, I can punch up a ticket and leave for Paris the next day... Now stop it before I pull the trigger!!! :o)

s.fowler Jul 8th, 2002 10:53 AM

Yuppers -- don't expect any help from us -- if I could go tonight I would :D
My name is s.fowler and I'm addicted to Paris...

Thanks for the nice words on the photos -- I focused on places I hadn't been recently or at all -- and as a result experienced a "new" Paris to add to the other memories...

Annette Jul 8th, 2002 11:52 AM

Your pics are lovely; funny, I have that same one of the Saints in front of Notre Dame (like who doesn't, right?)! St. Etienne Du Mont was the 1st church I visited...thanks for sharing. Given the opportunity, who wouldn't go back to Paris in a minute?
scarlett Jul 8th, 2002 11:58 AM

We should all have a GTG in Paris next year..
Or maybe this year since I am longing to be in Paris. So much so that I am starting to make all of our favorite dinners that we had in Paris,as if I could make them that well! But I am trying, with some Piaf on and enough red wine, it works sometimes:)

andi Jul 12th, 2002 07:53 AM

I would like to know how Yuppers manages to "punch a ticket and leave the next day." I just used miles to reserve a trip to Italy in May, 2003! I always have to book well in advance with mine (two different credit cards, American and Delta). Am I missing something?

veeolette Jul 12th, 2002 03:20 PM

I thought I was the only one!!!! I was there in May and am very depressed. Chocolat chaud at Angelina, dejeuner at Jules Verne, wandering along the Seine, any museum, setting on the steps of Sacre Coeur, Berthillon, Nutella crepes, rue Mouffetard, rue Dragon, Cafe Dany overlooking the Seine, !!!!!!!! Please take me back to Paris.

Yuppers Jul 12th, 2002 04:56 PM

Andi, the reason is the 100,000 miles vs. 50,000 for a capacity-controlled. It's nice if you can find the lower "cost" opening, but if you can't, then you can use more miles and dump the limitations on seats. In short, you're doing the right thing to get the most value, if it fits your plans. But if a person wants to do something impetuous, then there's a way to handle that, too. :o)

xx Jul 12th, 2002 05:36 PM

You, impetuous, I can't believe it.

MaryC Jul 12th, 2002 09:51 PM

Lola, I was going to go to Laduree (at your suggestion) last time I was in Paris but couldn't make it. :( But did make it to Angelina's in your honor (mmm ~ pink champagne and Quiche Lorraine, Mont Blanc and le Africain!!).

Wish I were shopping on Rue Cler for those HUGE grapes and other picnic essentials!! BIG SIGHS, everyone!

IMissParis Jul 13th, 2002 04:53 AM

I miss waking to the sounds of the dishes clinking as room service brings me wonderful coffee and croissants.
I miss sitting in Luxembourg Gardens and watching the people.
I miss sitting at Cafe Marly and watching the tourists.
I miss the food,the wine.
I miss stumbling along with my fractured French and having a Frenchman/woman beam at me and answer me in French(appreciating my trouble) and I beam back (thrilled that we understood each other)
I miss getting lost in small winding streets and discovering something/someplace that no one had told me about.
I miss Paris.
