I am sorry

God bless America and all Americans

I am so sorry, so very sorry

Rex Sep 11th, 2001 09:47 AM

Thank you.
Ursula Sep 11th, 2001 11:45 AM

All my sympathies to the American people. I am so very sorry, too.

I just got home and watch CNN television. I hardly can hold back my tears. It's too much.

I hope all you fodorites are fine.
Please do make your scheduled trips to Europe. It may help to get over this tragedy and you will encounter a lot of sympathy here, I am sure.

Book Chick Sep 11th, 2001 12:00 PM

Thank you, Ursula.

I have heard unconfirmed reports that air travel in the USA might be suspended for as long as a week, while heightened security measures are installed in all our airports. If this turns out to be true, it should be a surprise to absolutely no one.

I, for one, plan on going to Paris. I will absolutely not allow some hoodlum terrorist cowardly thugs put me into such a state of fear & panic that I am unable to see all the world has to offer. I believe doing that would signal victory for them, & I am unwilling, on a personal level, to do that.

Thank you to all our European Fodorites who have offered their compassion, concern, tears, outrage, shock & contempt at what happened today in America. Bless you all.

BC

And for you Ursula:

@--->---->---->------

Ursula Sep 11th, 2001 12:18 PM

Book Chick: Merci beaucoup pour la rose!

I like your attitude.

Ila Sep 11th, 2001 01:52 PM

Thank you, Helen and Ursula. And BC, echo here from Atlanta: nothing other than authorities will keep me off that plane.
I send a hug and to everyone personally affected, pray for healing of wounds, and hope we can all resist the urge to hate and distrust (difficult to do, isn't it?).
Ila

Linda Sep 11th, 2001 02:37 PM

I am also sorry for the loss of the Americans and all other nationalities who had international offices and branches in the Trade Center. Such a tragedy...there are no words.

giovanna Sep 11th, 2001 03:13 PM

I'm very sorry to the fellow americans ,my heart goes out to the victims families. My prayers are with you.
giovanna

Mel Sep 11th, 2001 05:51 PM

Thank you, thank you, thank you... to all our friends everywhere. This is a true community.
My son, who is on the road constantly with a band, finally checked in and is safe in Detroit.
My friend of over 30 years, an executive at Grand Central Station, phoned to say she's fine, the devestation is horrendous "in person," but New Yorkers have come together in incredible ways.
I happened to be in Mass doing the readings for a friend's mother's funeral between the second hit and the Pentagon hit. At the risk of sounding corny, I was grateful to have an opportunity to be on my knees to get in early prayers for everyone in NY.
Finally, loads of us were turned away when trying to give blood around noon. If you are also, PLEASE call and get an appointment for next week--they'll be needing it for a long time. This is a wake up (for me, at least), not to wait until an emergency. If we can give blood, we should set up appointments just as we would for our hair or nails and do it regularly--perhaps four times a year.
Finally, Tony Blair was wonderful today--a true statesman who's expressions of support rang absolutely true and I, for one, will never forget it.
Thanks for letting me get this out...

s.fowler Sep 11th, 2001 06:00 PM

The expressions of support and care from our European friends are especially precious as we face the enormity of the situation. In our case personal emails from Macedonia, Slovenia, Ukraine, Belgium, France and Norway have helped us feel less alone.

Lucy Sep 11th, 2001 06:02 PM

My deepest sympathy & condolences from Australia. You are all in my thoughts & prayers. Even though I'm living on the other side of the world I am still stunned, scared & sick to my stomach at the senseless destruction & loss of life.
The only place I've been in the US is NYC & I fell in love with it. Its an amazing strong vibrant cosmopolitan city full of people from many different walks of life & it will rise again.
I'm so very sorry for all Americans & the world at large as this impacts everyone everywhere.

Sue Sep 11th, 2001 06:10 PM

Thank you for your concern and prayers everyone...we need it today to heal us tomorrow.

And, Bookchick...I don't think anyone will say it better than you did! NO WAY am I cancelling my trip to Europe next summer because of a cowardly act by a few insane people.
Vincent Sep 11th, 2001 06:16 PM

Ila: I see a multiplicity of reasons to harbor intense hatred toward certain sects/individulas as a result of (as well as prior to) cowardly terroristic acts perpetrated against innocent civilians. Get real. There will be severe ramifications from these events, though they may be played out over many months or years.

Mel: there will likely be no significant shortage of blood products on the east coast of the US. Relatively few people were seriously injured and survived. This was largely a set of all or none injuries.

Jen Sep 11th, 2001 06:18 PM

Thank you everyone from around the world for your words of support. It has been a horrifying day here in America.

My sympathies to all the families and victims. May you rest in peace.

Joanna Sep 11th, 2001 06:22 PM

My heart goes out to all who have been touched by this terrible tragedy.

az Sep 11th, 2001 06:29 PM

Lights of Democracy
To all of our European friends, THANK YOU for your expressions of sympathy and support. Please know that the light of American democracy cannot be extinguished by even the most heinous acts of terrorism.

And to the Americans: Turn on your headlights whenever you drive to let the world know that
America has the strength and commitment to sustain the light and promise
of American democracy even on its darkest day. Let there be millions
of these beacons across our country that will send a clear signal that
Americans are united in our opposition to terrorism.
Pass this on to your e-mail distribution lists.

Lori Sep 11th, 2001 10:18 PM

Although I cannot seem to describe what I am feeling right now, I also wanted to send sympathies to you from Israel. The prime minister has called for a Day of Mourning here today. Also it is my understanding that they are soliciting type 0 blood donors(universal donor) to send to the US. Unfortunately neither my husband or I have type O and I feel so utterly helpless. I wish that I could help some how. If there is anything please let me know via this forum.

My heart and prayers are with you.

Leslie Sep 11th, 2001 10:41 PM

Thank you friends from across the world for your kind words and prayers for our injured, deceased, their families, and all Americans. We will overcome this horrific tragedy, and attend to these evil terrorists. Our pain will soon turn to anger and retribution. No more mercy for the radicals and extremist. We must destroy them!

Jim Sep 12th, 2001 12:42 AM

I'm devastated. I live in Tokyo and I woke up this morning with the Japanese news showing recorded pictures of the WTC burning. I was shocked. Then, eventually I saw the 2nd plane hit (all recorded earlier) and then the collapse of the two building. I couldn't believe my eyes. I felt like I did when Bobby Kennedy was killed (I was 6). I went to bed and the world was okay and I woke up with madness. It is all so surreal. Will we ever be the same?

Janine Sep 12th, 2001 12:59 AM

My thoughts and prayers go out to all Americans and those affected by this devastating tragedy.
Like many, I woke on the other side of the world to this news with shock, horror and disbelief. Has the world gone mad?
Book Chick, your words and those of others who refuse to be bowed, are inspiring. As the long as the flame of the human spirit burns....
May the dawn bring a brighter day.

Ursula Sep 12th, 2001 03:04 AM

In Switzerland, right now, at 1 p.m., all church bells are ringing for the American people as a sign of sympathy.

Lien Sep 12th, 2001 03:49 AM

Whole our country, Belgium, is in shock after we heard about these horrifying attacks in the US. Words are not enough to express how we feel, but we can't stop thinking about all those innocent people who have been killed, and their families and friends.
To all Amercans who planned a trip to Europe: please come, you are very welcome here and, as someone mentionned before, you will find a lot of sympathy. We are with you.

mike Sep 12th, 2001 11:05 AM

Thank you to all our brothers and sisters in Europe (and elsewhere)for your support, and I look forward to once again being "over there." M.

Book Chick Sep 12th, 2001 03:58 PM

Thyra,
I brought this post back up to tell you I was so sorry to hear you lost a friend. I have a friend & an NYC co-worker (branch of our office in the WTC) who did survive, but I cry every time I think about what my life would be like without them. I am so sorry for your loss.

Janine, Sue & Ila, thanks for your words of encouragement.

Ursula, thank you for telling us about the Swiss church bells. That sentiment is so lovely & so heartfelt. The outpouring of support has touched me so very much, words deny me proper expression. From the church bells to the French newspaper headline "TODAY WE ARE ALL AMERICANS" to PM Tony Blair's sensitive, comforting & intelligent speech, I can tell you truthfully, I do not feel alone in this dark hour.
BC

Thyra Sep 12th, 2001 04:31 PM

Book Chick: et al, worse news, unfortunately, my father just called to say that a dear former business partner whom he had known for years also is dead. I can't stand to hear my father's, a WW2 Vet, voice shake. To all friends overseas and here: Too often I have listend to news from far away, terrible events, terror, bombings, famine, plague etc. And though I felt deep sympethy...
I don't know what I am trying to write.
All of the generous postings from all the people all over the world, thank you so so much, it may not seem like much but an email and a kind word are more precious then anything right now.
I don't know how this will effect the future, or anyone else, but it's certainly made me see how valuable and fragile life can be.
I hope I can reach out to another country/person in a time of need, the way you all have reached out via this message board with kind feelings.
I hope I can live life to the fullest.
I hope I can learn to understand more, I am more proud of my country then I was two days ago.
I am more proud of more people then I was two days ago.
I am more determined then I was two days ago.
And mostly I am more empathetic, and more caring then I was two days ago. The next time I see a news story about bombings overseas, or acts of terror committed miles and miles away, it shall hit me, entirely. Completely. I shall care more. I shall be more "human".
This I think shall turn this horrible, beyond horrible deed into a victory, not for the perpetrators, but for all of us who share a bond of humanity.
Good Energy to all, and thank you.
God Bless us.
Book Chick Sep 12th, 2001 04:39 PM

Oh Thyra!
I am so sorry! Please accept my continued sympathy for your loss, know you are in my heart, along with your family. If you want to talk at greater length, need a shoulder to cry on or want to vent in any way, just e-mail me directly.

I, too, am a much prouder American now than I was 2 days ago. And I, too, have much greater appreciation of my friends & of what really matters.

Please keep in touch & blessings to you & your loved ones,
BC

Linda Sep 12th, 2001 04:48 PM

To all of our friends who have taken time to show your support and sympathy on this thread and so many others, thank you. It is wonderful to know American has so many terrific friends around the world.

And Thyra, I am so sorry for your losses. I am so heartbroken to know that your grief is reflected so many, many times in the hearts of others who have lost loved ones and dear friends.

D Sep 12th, 2001 05:02 PM

I am sitting here crying and reading all of the wonderful posts from people all over the world. We thank you for your sympathy and concern! America may bend, but we won't break!
