there's an interesting article from this month's National Geo. Traveler magazine on "World Heritage Sites Rated."

73. Just returned from Japan and visiting Morocco next.

Underhill Oct 30th, 2006 02:12 PM

29 so far, mostly in Fr and the U.K.

thit_cho Oct 30th, 2006 02:35 PM

I need to change my list w/r/t upcoming trips. I have decided to postpone my trip to NZ until later in 2007 or 2008, and have added a trip to Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana for next August, which will give me one (Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname) World Heritage Site, and one likely site (Kaiteur Falls in Guyana).

More than some, less than others,

Although I went to school in one of the UNESCO sites (Saltaire), we were taught in the school but ate school dinners across the road under Victoria Hall :-)

Girlspytravel Nov 16th, 2006 08:36 PM

The public is now invited to vote for the new 7 Wonders of the World, out of a field of 21, chosen by experts. So far, around 20 million people around the world have voted!

If you want to vote, go to the UNESCO link: www.n7w.com. The results will be announced in Lisbon, Portugal on July 7 '07.

For the record, I have been to most of the 21 "candidates" and it was really tough for me, the 6th and 7th choices, but....below are my picks:

In order of importance (to me):

1. Pyramids
2. Colisseum
3. Petra
4. Acropolis
5. Taj Mahal
6. Chichen Itza
7. Eiffel Tower

Note I chose Chichen Itza over Angkor Wat, both built around the same time period-but Angkor Wat never did a thing for me, whereas Chichen Itza I thought to be quite magnificent and thrilling.

flygirl Dec 7th, 2006 06:52 AM

The latest National Geographic Traveler has a huge section on the World Heritage sites, including a big fold-out map. check it out while it is still in newstands!

Daisy54 Dec 7th, 2006 07:45 AM

Sadly I've only been to 15, wish I could visit more!
My list has:
Belize Barrier Reef (my daughter lives there)
Chichen Itza, Mexico
Spain - Alhambra, Cordoba and Toldeo
UK - Stonehenge, Blenheim Palace, Bath, Westminster Abbey, Canterbury Cathedral, Tower of London, Edinburgh Old & New Town, Greenwich
USA - Grand Canyon, Mammoth Caves

laverendrye Dec 7th, 2006 08:29 AM

72 so far, mainly in Europe and North America. Hope to see a few more on next year's visit to China.

mikemo Dec 7th, 2006 09:38 AM

53, but sadly, as San Miguel de Allende is vying for a 2008 inclusion, the city fathers just permitted a big-box Mega Comercial to open at the Pipila glorieta.

81 so far, if I counted right. Another coming soon.

Sue_xx_yy Dec 7th, 2006 11:46 AM

Clifton, you can find out about the nomination process on the unesco site.

"Only countries that have signed the World Heritage Convention, pledging to protect their natural and cultural heritage, can submit nomination proposals for properties on their territory to be considered for inclusion in UNESCO’s World Heritage List."

My favourite is the Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump in Alberta, Canada. And yes, staff answer the phone, "Head Smashed In, Can I help you?"

I have added four more recently:

Taos Pueblo in New Mexico (October)

Sintra (last week)
Tomar (last week)
Mosteiros dos Jeronimos, Lisbon (last week)

I took my Mom to Italy in May and am heading back again next month, I will have to check if any new places in May (or new places next month) will add to my list...

travel2live2 Nov 26th, 2007 07:05 AM

So far I have been to 67 but that should increase to about 90-100 by the end of 2008.

Thanks for the list! I hadn't looked it up for awhile...

scdreamer Nov 26th, 2007 07:13 AM

Not sure how many in all ... maybe 25 or so. The most obscure for me was the medieval city of Gjyrokastra in Albania.

Cholmondley_Warner Nov 26th, 2007 07:28 AM

I've visted a fair few of them. However am I the only person here who actually works in one? (Greenwich)

laverendrye Nov 26th, 2007 07:36 AM

I can count 78 which I have visited, having added several from a recent visit to China.

Sadly, I find that I have visited only half the sites in my own country (Canada). I must correct that!

110, much to my surprise

semiramis Nov 26th, 2007 08:39 AM

This was actually rather fun to figure out - more than I thought I had - about 50
Most in the U.K. (which I have visited several times)

tcreath Nov 26th, 2007 09:11 AM

I didn't realize there were so many of them. It seems like everywhere but my backyard has made the list.

I have been to quite a few, but stopped counting after about 53.

nfldbeothuk Nov 26th, 2007 01:53 PM

30, which is far more than I would have guessed, since I haven't been to that many countries. However, I have seen a lot of the Canadian ones, having lived in both Atlantic Canada & the West.
It definitely does give ideas of places to go...
like I need ideas...what I need is CASH!

travel2live2 Nov 26th, 2007 01:56 PM

An interesting observations - although I live in Canada I have only been to about five in our country. And only a few in the U.S. The remaining 60 or so have all been in Europe. This tells me I should be looking in my back yard a wee bit more! ;)

IrishEyes Nov 26th, 2007 02:06 PM

I have been to more than I thought but not close to what many people have already posted.

1. Notre Dame

2. Paris, Banks of the Seine

3. Acropolis, Athens

4. Bru na Boinne, Ireland

5. Giant's Causeway & Causeway Coast, Northern Ireland

6. Historic Center of Rome

7. Stonehenge, Avebury & Associated Sites

8. Blenheim Place

9. City of Bath

10. Dorset & East Devon Coasts

11. Cornwall & West Devon Mining Landscape

12. Everglades National Park

13. Redwood National & State Parks

14. Great Smokey Mountains National Park

15. Yosemite National Park

16. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

17. Monticello

18. Versailles

Clifton, I too have wondered why Ireland didn't have more sites listed.

I also think this list is kind of odd. But it was fun to try and remember and to count.

I got to 80 or 81 (did a lot of family travel growing up, which accounts for lots of these visits).

My list was heavy on places like France, Spain, Italy and the UK - mostly European sites, with Asia (specifically Japan and India -Khajuraho with its erotic sculptures! Will never forget that place), Egypt & Israel, and lots in the USA. All those US road trips really helped!

I realized how many places in nearby Mexico I have never seen; definitely need to widen my Mexico horizons. Next year's trip is hopefully Peru, so I can see a few more interesting sites.

maitaitom Apr 29th, 2008 12:51 PM

Thirty-Nine. However, we have the opportunity to hit 15 on our next trip in about a month.

Great Britain, Central Europe, Mexico, Guatemala, Bermuda, USA

hetismij Apr 29th, 2008 01:38 PM

43, including all the Netherlands sites except Willemstad Curacao. The rest were in Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, Tanzania, UK, USA.
Adding a couple more US ones to the list in a couple of weeks.

BarbAnn Apr 29th, 2008 01:42 PM

41, but hope to add more on our trip to Italy and Greece this fall.

At least 52 for me. I'm a bit fuzzy on the ones in Asia as well as Portugal/Spain as I visited these places when I was younger.

-------------------------

So, 1.5 years later, I added

Vienna
Chartres
Wurzburg
Bamberg
Alhambra/Granada
Cordoba
Works of Gaudi
Segovia
Seville
Palau de la Musica Catalana

So now it's around 62 or so.

tower Apr 29th, 2008 07:15 PM

Over the past two years I've added 12 to my 109...total of 121...wife is at 101....long way to go to catch Thit Cho..fun to check 'em off. (four more next week on travels through Portugal).

Though seriously: some of these are downright hokey

Blenheim Palace? Wroclaw Centennial Hall? The Alberobello trulli?

Some pretty impressive monuments to local lobbying.

Giovanna Apr 30th, 2008 08:48 AM

<Only 25, but much to my embarrassment none in my own country. We only live a couple hours away from Yosemite, and I was raised in Colorado but never got to Mesa Verde. But I promise to keep on traveling and trying to visit more!>

I've lost my embarrassment and increased my list. We went to Yosemite last year, visited Russia for the first time, as well as some other travels, so the list now is 39.

Forgot to total, which is 156 (and 11 or so on planned trips in 2008).

The years next to the sites are the years of inscription on the UNESCO list (which is how they are set out on the list from where I cut-and-pasted them), not my year of visit.
