This has been an interesting thread. I think the jealousy isn't really in how "extravagant" or "wealthy" you are perceived, but really that travelling requires a lot of effort that not everyone is willing to put in.
We just got back from England last week (I hope to pull a trip report together one of these days!) and some people have reacted as if we're wealthy and/or extravagant. In reality, when I compared prices of going to Fla. (where my in-laws live) in February, the prices were similar. And if you go to Fla., no one bats an eyelash. The thing about going to Europe is it requires a great deal of effort to leave your comfort zone. If friends and relatives are jealous of anything, it's more likely to be your ability to take risk.
Trust me, we have kids, a large mortgage and a very old car, but the money we spend traveling as a family has been worth every cent. The memories are a joy that no one can take away. BTW, in 10 days I shot 11 rolls of film. I'm putting the best photos in an album. In the past, most of my friends like to see the album for artistic purposes (in other words, not just pictures of family members standing in front of important monuments). I might just mention that I did an album, and then gauge if they're interested in seeing it. (They usually are since I give them copies of photos they like!) Good luck and enjoy every trip!
