If you can get Hotel Madison at 170 euro that is a good deal. I know everyone on this board likes Le Regent but you need to be sure to get the bigger room so don't know if that will fit in your budget.

In August we stayed at the Hotel Saint Germain des Pres. Got a good August discount but there regular rooms would fit into your budget. I compared standard room size of this hotel with Le Regent and St. Germain des pres had slightly bigger rooms. The bathrooms were nice size. Rue Jacob is just down the block.

The best thing about this hotel is the location on Rue Bonaparte (there are several hotels with very similiar names on other streets). This hotel was next to the cafes Les Deux Magot, Cafe de Flore. Cafe Bonaparte was steps away. The metro stop was two very short blocks away as was Blvd Saint Germain. The best thing for me was that Ludaree (macaroons) was right
down the street. It took about 10 min to walk to the Seine and the Louvre-I am a fast walker. Notre Dame is a little further. Rue de Bucci was about a five minute walk where you will find Paul's, great shops and market and even better gelato.

The staff at the hotel was outstanding. Dominque and Florence were so delightful and helpful. The gentlemen at the night shift was wonderful, I feel bad I can't recall his name right now. Rue Bonaparte is a busy street mostly with some bus traffic but the rooms are climate controlled so you don't have to sleep with the window open. We had a room on the street, never heard a sound and I am a very light sleeper. If you look at the website, you will see the decor is very flowery but it wasn't overpowering. They do have a complimentary breakfast. I actually made a deal without the breakfast because I knew I would be trying out the different bakeries in the morning, so I can't comment on how good their breakfast is. The website is:
www.hotel-paris-saint-germain.com.

Good luck on making your decision. Any hotel recommended on this forum will be a good one.

Paris hotels are definitely NOT seriously overpriced. They are much cheaper for the quality than any comparable capital city I know of. Last summer, I had a nice room in a 3* hotel in Montparnasse where I usually stay--minibar, AC, real shower in a tile bathroom, etc, for only 90 euro a night. I couldn't get anything like that quality in NY or London for that price, or even many US capital cities.

As for Paris hotels being overpriced... in my opinion...I do feel that they are overpriced compared to hotels I have stayed at in other countries and on other continents...I've been on all continents except Antartica... over the last 32 years.I feel that I don't get very much for my money and that there's no big difference between the so-called inexpensive ones and the medium-priced to upper medium-priced ones...by Paris standards. One of my best friends went to Paris recently and stayed on the right bank in an upper-medium priced hotel...$300 a night or slightly more...she didn't have to pay for it since the friend who took her had won the trip...but she's been to Paris many times and has also lived there. She said that she was not impressed by the hotel they stayed at. The room was just as clostophobically small as the hotels that she and I have stayed at on the left bank and the only difference she saw was that the hers provided more services...like a restaurant and there was more ornateness in the interior design...which she could have done without. She never would have paid the price for that room if she had had to pay for it out of her pocket. Happy Travels!
