I agree with what you say, MyriamC. But I read some posts here which seem to say the opposite of what you experienced with the owner and her staff.

sfowler Jan 31st, 2005 02:40 AM

My apologies Myriam. We posted at the same time I think. I am glad that you had a pleasant stay.

On the other hand I did not make the claim that she treated *all* people in the manner we were. [Nor did francophile03] I was only reporting *my* experience. Which was that a lovely gem of a hotel was spoiled by the manner in which I was treated by "Madame." [not to mention the dog]

I recently stayed at the Hotel Delavigne in the 6th. It has all the amenities and charms and modernisation and decor and politesse of a 3-star, even comparable to a 4-star in that way, but no a/c, and some of the standard doubles are vrey small.
Our twin room #24 was one of the larger ones, with two twins pushed together. It was 130 euro, the smaller doubles are less.
Except in summer, I would stay there again anytime. Website has rates

Muguet-"lovely gem of a hotel?" I think that's stretching it a bit.

sfowler Jan 31st, 2005 06:39 AM

In the 2 star category it *is* a gem. It is clean, nicely decorated and well-run. It is nicer in those terms than any other 2 star I have been able to find since Motte Picquet went three star and has been decorated like a bordello.

So I am searching ... for a 2 star of charm where the dog doesn't bite you!

I stayed here in Sept 04 at the beginning and end of my 3 week vacation. The first night was a week night, with the redhead and salt and pepper women, they couldn't have been nicer. The room was actually a triple, which was large by Paris standards. It had a nice new bathroom, the price was 105E and we couldn't have been happier and were glad that we had tried a 2*, we usually stay in the 6th at a price of about 160E. We returned 3 weeks later, on a weekend, with a different staff and were given a regular queen room. It was a little small, great big closet, again, new big bathroom, it was what we had expected in the first place. The front desk was not as friendly, indifferent is more like it, but certainly not rude. Again, we paid 105E and were very pleased. I think that the problem sometimes might be that people are expecting more of a 2*, this is a fine place for the price, I would stay there again.

@ sfowler: <since Motte Picquet went three star and has been decorated like a bordello>
Any pictures? ;)

Spygirl Jan 31st, 2005 06:59 AM

Like I said, I found it to be nothing special, even in the 2 star category, nothing charming about it at all-it's perfectly adequate.

As for 2 star hotels with charm, they're out there, with views and balconies, refurbished rooms and baths, but, you gotta root them out, like pigs searching for truffles!

And Spygirl -- I gather you're not sharing?

Here's some pictures of Hogtel de la Motte Picquet post renovation.

It's getting some bad reviews on tripadvisor.com

Spygirl Jan 31st, 2005 07:44 AM

Oh, sfowler, I share, look, I shared my thoughts on the Muguet, didn't I? (smile)

Much to my regret, last night I even shared on my fave Venice hotel! (see, I'm sharing again!)

elaine Jan 31st, 2005 07:54 AM

Spygirl's comments intrigue me, I'd love to know about a well-located 2-star with views and balconies, refurbished rooms and baths.

I had been hoping that the Grand Hotel Balcons, where I started out on my last trip, would have met those criteria but imo it did not. I admit to not having much experience with 2-stars, but I do know when I can't wait to escape a hotel, which I did, even after trying a change of room within the same place.
Yes my first room at the Balcons was excruciatingly small, but at that price, that was not one of my top three sources of discontent.

sfowler Jan 31st, 2005 08:33 AM

Oh yes Spygirl -- and you were SO generous.

elaine -- sg ain't gonna spill -- I think we're on our own here ... [and if you think I am dumb enough to limit my search to Fodors you're nuts! I have my sources too ...]

We just sent our parents to Paris, just a one day trip via London, and put them up at the Muguet. I personally have not stayed there before but I had very good email communication with them. When I requested our parents have a room with a view of the Eiffle Tower I was told it was already booked but if it became available they would be happy to do that for 108 euro.

When my parents checked in they did get the room with the windows in the ceiling and the view. They loved it. They also raved about the bathroom. One of the women at the front suggested Pasco restaurant down the street which my parents have now decided was one of their best meals ever.

MyriamC Feb 26th, 2005 12:45 PM

Glad your parents liked the Muguet, and Pasco! We've never eaten better in Paris.

We stayed at the Muguet at the end of January for a week. We had room 63, which is a queen-bedded room with a view of Invalides.

Didn't have a single problem, and we speak almost no French and are American. Found everything nicely decorated, and very pleasant. There was a well-behaved poodle in the lobby most days, and the last few days, a young wire-haired fox terrier that was just adorable (and slighty naughty). Yeah, we're dog lovers, and once had a WH fox...

This was our third stay in Paris, and we felt like we finally found "our" place.

PS we had a picnic dinner in our room one night, but didn't advertise, or leave a mess.

I had a good experience there as well after choosing from alkl the Fodors recommendations three years ago. We did not bother with breakfast and probably had very little dealings with the front desk other than the night porter who we felt awful waking up (Irish Guilt) but he was always polite and chirpy evan when we woke him at 2am. We would tell him most nights we would be out late and expect us.

Sfowler.....that dog is a demon and I have worked around dogs in the past. I approached "it" with my hand down so it could sniff and sus me out and it nearly took the flippin arm off me. I screamed and told him in English what I wanted to do with him so Madame could not hear. She did not bat an eye. He almost did the same to a French lady in the lobby after me but she was much kinder calling him a naughty dog.

I would stay in the Muguet again but I would like to try a elsewhere next time for a change.

How does the Hotel Muguet compare with the Champs du Mars and St Dominic? Aren't these in the same general area and price range?

It is a nicer property.
