Do they have TV with international CNN? We stayed at Grandes Ecoles and liked it a lot but we did miss seeing the news on a regular basis.

Dave, we had a room overlooking the street and our room had two sets of French doors opening onto a small balcony. We enjoyed leaving the doors open and wandering out every once in awhile to see the goings on below. I do agree that the balcony is quite narrow, but we had no problem standing on it and even took some photos of one another out there. It does not, however, have room for a table or chairs.

As far as International CNN, I don't recall. There was a TV in the room, but we didn't use it.

We had 2 rooms, both had a TV, but we couldn't find an English speaking channel of any kind on either. Saying that, we didn't really bother much with the TV so with a bit of twiddling CNN might have been there somewhere. You could call or email Julie at reception and ask her. She is really nice and very helpful, and her English is excellent.

Dave, I replied to your balcony question on another thread of yours, but to repeat for the benefit of others, we had 2 little balconies, both with tubs of geraniums on them so no room for standing, but you could still lean over to look out, and very pleasant it was too.

Incidentally, I stayed over the road at Hotel des Nations last year, and from the 5th floor we could look out left and see the roofs of Notre Dame, but they are not visible from the 3rd floor of Hotel Monge.

Does anyone know the difference between a "double room with shower" and "double room with bath facing the street"?

I haven't stayed at Hotel Monge but I believe any room that has a shower is smaller than a room with bath.

If I remember correctly, our room had a shower/bath like most standard US hotels. I could be mistaken, though. Our room also overlooked the street and had a small balcony with two French doors.

I have also stayed in Parisian hotels that had only a bath and the bathroom was rather large by Parisian standards. If it were me, I would email Julie and ask her specifics. She is a bit shy, but very nice to deal with and answers all email inquiries, at least according to my experience.

I agree with Francophile -- usually, any room with a bath is larger than those with only showers. But, might as well ask to be sure -- just ask the approximate size in m2 of the two different kinds, or whether they are the same size. Rooms with ONLY a shower are almost always rooms that were not original bedrooms, and the shower has been put in later to modernize the hotel. Rooms with bath (with usually have a shower hose attachment of some kind in the tub) are more likely to be larger rooms, and the bathroom will usually be larger, also.

Those are generalities from my experiences, I'm sure you can find any combination.

For dwzemens, don't worry about the Hotel Monge's location. It's in a nice position closeby to the rue Mouffetard street market and the Arenes de Lutece. It took me approximately 20 or 25 minutes to walk down to the Seine. The Hotel Monge is one of the most reasonably priced hotels in the area. It's great value for Paris for sure. I always read nice things about the hotel and its owner too.

I stayed at the Monge in May 2004 and the TV in my room did have CNN in English, so I would assume they all do.
