Grocery Stores in Rome
 

Does anyone know of any grocery stores on or near Via Cavour in Rome somewhat near the American Embassy area? Something other than the one that is located in the underground cavern area on Via Cavour-too small and does not carry much? I am looking for the large "chain type" that I found down in Trastevere area that I can find my olive oil and hazelnuts,etc. that I like.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I am not familiar with grocery stores in Via Cavour, and near the US embassy (Via Veneto, Via Bissolati area) I don't recall having seen large grocery stores (in Via Bissolati there are mainly Airline Companies and in Via Veneto mainly hotels, fashion and shoe shops and restaurants). My only suggestion would be to go up to Termini Railway Station's Forum, there is a GS supermarket there (GS is a supermarket chain) and there you will be able to find what you are looking for. Apart from the GS, on the upper level of the Forum (platforms level) there is a neat shop selling italian products like pasta, wine, oil and other things. Check it out.

There is a large grocery , supermarket underground in the passageway of the Spanish Steps Metro. You can enter down the stairs at the top of the Via Veneto.

There is a grocery store (not sure if it's part of a chain, but it could be, and it's a pretty decent size) in the Metro! If you go down via Veneto to the entrance to the Spagna Metro, it's actually in there. I think it has a pretty good selection, and it also has grocery carts; I've been in other grocery stores in Rome that have hand baskets, but no carts!

My notes say there is also a Supermercato in the heart of Rome just off Piazza della Rotonda on via Giustiniani.

try Sma supermarket, opposite Sta Maria Maggiore which is on Via Cavour.It is quite comprehensive and opens extended hours on some days. Sam

There's a smaller market (hand baskets only, but an amazing selection of goods given its size) about a block or two away from Pensione Panda. I discovered it quite by accident because it's set back from the "street" a bit. I bought those cakes called "columba" there; they're shaped like a dove and consumed throughtout Lent, and I brought some back to my co-workers.

Grazie again, BC. On my first visit, the only market we went to was the open air one on Via Cola di Rienzo, near the Vatican and, on the second visit, the wonderful market in Campo di Fiori. I usually love visiting grocery stores in a city (did that in Venice) but have yet to visit one in Rome.

Where is the grocery store in Trastevere that you mentioned? I will be staying there in a few weeks. Our apartment is on Via della Luce, which is across from Isola Tiberna. It would be fun to do a little grocery shopping while there.

Can anyone tell me if the grocery store at the Spagna metro stop would be open on Sunday afternoon or evening? Also, would it sell beer and wine? I will be arriving in Rome on a Sunday morning, and earlier this year when I arrived on Sunday, I had a hard time finding beer, since so many stores were closed. This time I will be staying close to the Spagna metro stop, so I'm happy to know about the store.

mjnbrown..sorry I can't help on the opening days..but they had a very large selection of beer ,wine and liquors. I picked up limoncello at about 1/3 the price for the same brands as in wine shops.

And BC Babe! We brought home columbas too! And HUGE boxes of Canaroli rice for practically pennies as compared to US prices!

Barb-I cannot remember the name of the grocery store but I thought that it was the big chain store(GS?). We took the trolley across the Tiber and it was (I think?) the second stop on the left. I am going to Rome again next weekend so will try and get better directions for you when I get back. I love going to grocery stores overseas as you find the most amazing things! Keep the suggestions coming.........

It was in 2001, we found it by mistake. our first trip to rome, went to Villa Borghese for the tour, realized when we got out, no vaild bus ticket!! Someone sent us down the metro to search for tickets, surprised me to find this BIG busy market and it was sunday around 1pm.

but, that was 2001, so don't bet all your money on me :)

Barb-I just got back fom Rome last night(short 21 hours there) but hit the grocery store in Trastevere. Its called OVIESSE STANDA. The top floor is clothing and cosmetics and the grocery store(large size) is downstairs. It is right on the main street where the trolleytram runs and we used bus H to get there from TERMINI station.The grocery store is one of the better ones that I have found in Rome-great fresh salads,prewrapped deli type things,wine,regular grocery items and wines,etc.The gelato store on the corner up from STANDA was wonderful..........

Any updates on supermarkets in Rome?

Enter ROMA under Città and press TROVA and you get a list and interactive map of Rome with store location. They have three stores in the centre, one just north of Piazza Navona, another near Borghese Gardens and one near the Vatican. All are open all day till about 8 pm, including Sundays.

I haven't read thru this whole old thread..but there is a large supermarket , in the passage from Via Veneto to the metro station at Pza de Spagna. We always make a stop there
